THIS is why Alan Jackson brought LLoyd in to do the "Remember When" solo! Pedal steelers are not given written music, they all create for the song in their own style. I've learned to play 6 instruments in my long life- pedal steel was by far the hardest! And by far the most rewarding! I play 2+ hours almost every day. Lloyd was the player that made me buy my first steel, the awesome playing on "Divorce" by Tammy Wynette. Producers said "put some steel on that"- and damn, did he!

I've never been a fan of steel guitar. Saw Eddy play with Vince Gill at the Ryman a couple of weeks ago and my mentality was changed, what a great player. Good wake up call!

This is great! I only just discovered it, showing up on TH-cam. First I have heard of the Council. There was a lot of information and ideas, yet it was spoiled by so much jargon, without explanation, so totally lost on me. Very frustrating. To sum up, there is too much 'inhouse jargon'. So, closed to all who want to learn more...... I'm hoping these words help. Thank you

I never expected him to bring up Kayton Roberts considering how everyone seems to have forgotten the master. You always hear about Byrd, Helms, Remington etc. but barely anyone brings up amazing and innovative players like Kayton Roberts, Jim Murphy and Reece Anderson. I have always considered Chris (and Andy Gibson back in the 2000s) as a follower of Kayton's style - especially considering how his whole setup is exactly the same as Kayton's. Kayton and Jim changed my life and I never hesitate to bring it up. Helms was the first one I ever heard, but hearing Jim play made me a steel player. Never forget about your heroes!

Steve is a wonderful guy to have as a friend, first. He is a walking encyclopedia of Country music, and he is as talented and intuitive as they come. A monster musician and person. Listen to him and learn, boys and girls. We go back 50 years. I love the guy, truly.

Pearls of wisdom and wonderful interview. Thank you for all your posts. Bruce is indeed awesome. I would like to hear the story on his building a rack and then ditching the idea. Like every steel player I'm less than satisfied with my tone and equipment and explore or chase the trends of the pros I see, only to find they too switch gear often. Please do a series on how and why you and other great players are using gear in your live and recording sessions.

Hey y’all! Bruce, I’m a steel player near Richmond VA and heard great things of your early days playing while you were at VCU! Heard (hearsay, not sure if it’s fact) that you hit the road in 6 months of playing steel ? That’s impressive! Hope to meet you one day, trying to get to Nashville one day (or at least join a group based out of there) and live the road musician life ! I’m prob the only guy in Richmond that plays ALL over the place Just yesterday 6/20/24 I was at a RnB/blues/jazz jam playing with those guys and Is always a great experience! They enjoyed it too ! Great interview!!
