In Jan. 1955, shortly after graduation from Notre Dame, my mom and dad took me to NYC while dad was on a business trip. We went to the Roosevelt Hotel and had a great table right in front of the Les & Larry Elgart band who were my favorite band. After one of the numbers Les Elgart introduced Ted Heath the leader of the best dance band in England. I told my folks what a great band Ted had and was looking all around the room to spot him. I got a "tap" on my shoulder and turned around and Ted stuck out his hand to shake mine and he thanked me very much for the nice compliment I just paid him. What a pleasant surprise that was ! It made a very lasting impression!64 years later and I still clearly see that occasion in my mi

Alfred I am also 77 Years Young and a life long fan of the Elgarts. A sound that you can recognize instantly when you hear an Elgart recording. You know that it is Les & Larry Elgart just as you would recognize Glenn Miller and Guy Lombardo. I don't have many records any longer but I do have most of their recordings in digital format and all that have been released on CD. Along with a couple of friends that are also Elgart collectors we have started a Facebook Page and TH-cam channel Both called "The Elgart Sound" and would like to invite you, Robert and John to take a look at our Facebook Group and Join if you like what you see. We welcome all Elgart fans to post music and share memories,. We have only been up for a few months but have several former Elgart Band members join as well as several vocalists that sang with the Elgarts and Lynn Elgart that are very active in the group. Here is a link. facebook.com/groups/TheElgartSound/

A great band with very distinctive instantly recognizable fine lead alto of Les Elgart. We call this dot and dash phrasing

I PLAYED 1ST TROMBONE IN A 'BRAND NEW' LARRY ELGART EDITION IN THE EARLY SPRING (MARCH) OF 1962, AND IN OCTOBER WAS PROMOTED TO BAND MANAGER, TOO! IN NOVEMBER, TOGETHER WITH THE INIMITABLE BOBBY SCOTT, WE ENTERED FABLED WEBSTER HALL, IN MANHATTAN, AND RECORDED 'KEEP MOVIN' FOR SEESAC'S SHORT-LIVED RECORD LABEL...BIASED AS I MAY BE, I BELIEVE THAT 'KEEP MOVIN' IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST ELGART BANDS.....EVER! THAT SAID, THIS LP IS ALSO AN EXCEPTIONAL ONE FILLED WITH GREAT TRACKS.....A MUST LISTEN!!

Recorded in STEREO at the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, February / March 1955
Part of a project entitled "The Bands Of Renown" by Les Brown that included this complete session with Les & Larry Elgart. THESE WERE THE FIRST AUDIO RECORDINGS IN STEREO EVER MADE ! They were not released at the time for unknown reasons. Here is the complete session from the CD that was released in 1995. Some of these tracks were also released on an album called “Ain’t We Got Fun”

I hate to burst your bubble. Look up "Alan Blumlein". You will see that he was working on stereo technology since the 1930's. Then look at the development of recording tape by the Germans. Stereo recordings were done by the Germans in the EARLY 40's, but of classical music. Even Duke Ellington participated by making stereo with TWO synchronized records in approx. 1932.

@@WPM_in_ATL Blumlein was obviously a genius as his many accomplishments in many areas were amazing to say the least. There were many people experimenting with Stereo. Les Paul probably did it with tape.
My friend John King researched these recordings and here is his summary:
"Between February 15 and March 6, 1955, the Les Elgart Orchestra performed at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. At the time, electronics engineer Gerry Macdonald was experimenting with a home-built stereo tape recorder and got permission to record the band. The tapes remained unpublished for nearly forty years until released in 1993 in CD format by Renown Records, “The Bands of Renown” (RR-1003-2, 19 tracks), and two years later by Drive Archive, “Ain’t We Got Fun” (DE2-41068, 14 tracks)."
This was a major accomplishment in my opinion as Gerry Macdonald had managed to record three complete as well as marketable Stereo Albums of amazing quality that included three concerts at the Palladium by major Big Bands of the day, Les Brown and Harry James as well as Les & Larry and they were prevented from releasing them due to possible contractual conflicts at the time. So they were shelved and not released until 40 years later. In my opinion as well as others they were at the least the first marketable recordings of albums in Stereo as we know it.
I know I was thrilled to find a complete unopened set of these CD's in an on line auction of a collection in England. They sound magnificent again in my opinion. So you did not burst my bubble, it is still intact.

Harry James was recorded in stereo at the Hollywood Bowl earlier in the 50's. Kenton had several tracks in stereo in 51/52 etc. Best to research this topic as it is full of odd experimental efforts for decades before Elgart recs.

hello everybody. I am just over 80 since december 2019 and I knew Les Elgart orchestra but not as well as many of you here because I am not from the States or Canada. I am a French-speaking Swiss citizen ( bonjour M. Normandeau du Québec ou j'ai pas mal d'amis).but I live in Ecuador/South America, city of Guayaquil (summer all year long) since 1992 with two intermediary stays of a few years in France and in Peru.My question is : who are the musicians of this LP ? thanks for your answer. Cheers. so long. amitiés.
