Wing chun doesnt work with 16oz gloves. Thats like giving a judo guy 16oz gloves and tell him to do judo. Wing chun is no more than a close range grappling art that ends in strikes. More closer to judo and bjj than boxing. The chain punch is perform when the opponent backs away out of wing chun range. If your not connecting withthin 3 punches you lost it. Its not hammer fist its straight punches driving your opponent back with your base over your feet not leaning forward with your weight in front of your feet. Wing chun man doesnt clinch. Thats what biu gee for. Doing a chain punch from too far away your going to get shot on/taken down or long fist. I would love to see wing chun in ufc. Its a great addition to mma. i hope you can pull it off. Watch vitor belfort vs wanderlei silva ko.

The human response to rapid attack flurries is not naturally effective. A lot of people actually do not have a good enough response to the flurry and just panic and cover up. U can also use this response defensively to have your partner panic when attacking. Its chaotic but does have a tactical purpose. At least from my experiences

Mma guys and boxers will start sniping and moving backwards and say they did "decent" while you could have literally walked them down a corridor and out of a door if you get what I mean. I think if you can stand in a doorway and the other guy can't get past you, you are the better fighter

    • @johnmaco
      @johnmaco ปีที่แล้ว +1

Definitely. That reaction happens due to lack of habit, since WC is one of the very few martial arts that throw punches so frequently in such a short time. Anyone who has received them knows how distracting they can be, block your vision, and make you defensive if you don't know how to react to them.
Among WC practitioners, it is taught how to react to that wave of punches.

@@edtheangler4930Sniping isn’t bad, also you don’t need a ton of punches if with a couple of shots you can knock down your opponent. I think a boxer would definitely try sniping, and if they feel like they’re giving up too much ground they’d probably just accept eating a couple of fast punches to land a powerful one, whereas an mma guy would probably just shoot for a double leg or something

Great session. I know it's a matter of teacher/school technique and preference, but my teacher was always wary of counterpunchers off of a chain, so I've been taught to use it as a means to bridge the gap - throw it out, but with low expectations that it'll connect, mostly use it to get in contact with the opponent's arms. That, or use it as a finisher. Looking forward to more. Great attitudes, lots of respect

Jeff the JKD guys really love the chain punch, their version the straight blast literally has you blasting your opponent with chain punch les while doing the 50 yard dash to overwhelm them with punches, speed and force. They often do exactly what you did either clinch up and go to the ground or clinch up and blast with elbows and knees. It works amazing in sparring
    This is a great video.

  • @cassiuslives4807

It just goes to show how alien concepts in Wing Chun are. Things like "springy energy" that is behind the "simultaneous attack and defence", or "power from the ground", "eating the horse" and that there isn't a "slip back" or "level change" once engaged are missing in the 15 mins crib notes explanations... especially since gloves change which techniques are usable. It shows how important it is to teach principles rather than techniques. Also missing were explanations of footwork which are boring to practice but essential for understanding how Wing Chun works. This was the best that could be done with a short explanation!

I feel the third concept works the best when you concentrate more on attacking than defending. If you wait until you block the opponent's strike, you are already too late, but if you see your opponent clearly throwing something with a good opening to use, striking at that opening before the opponent's strike lands and then blocking is more likely to work.

Hammerfist is effective, just not mainstream.
As for the backfist, its angle of attack comes from the opposite side of the torso, so unlike a basic jab or cross it is harder to generate power from that backhand angle. It takes more coordination to do it properly with power.

They need MMA gloves to exploit gaps better, and he needs to hold a long guard at all times, and put constant pressure on opponent like Tony Ferguson did with Pettis in UFC. Because then he comes into trapping range more often and can use wing chun's techniques more effectively. And if he's not gonna use wing chun's elbow payload, he'll need to innovate and use boxing hooks instead. Wing chun must keep that 'phone booth' pressure on at all times. No retreat!

First and foremost... This was beyond awesome.
When using any of the trapping techniques, I tend to stick with the pak dar off the jab either with a split entry, over the top to the head, or to the body with a power jab.
The lop dar or peel guard is a favorite as well. I use it with a sweep from the lead foot into an overhand.
When I use the chain punch in sparring, I find I have the most success from either after I successfully land an attack from a trap or from a feint. Typically, I'll teep a bit, then fake it, hop in, drill with the chain punch and exit with either a side step and round kicks to the leg, body or head. Or, I'll exit with a side step and a rear hook to the body.
    Just my two cents.
Again, love these videos from you guys.

Now that Jeff had a taste of Wing Chun, time to set him up with a Francis Fong session. Regarding today's session I'd just comment that it's not good to initiate the chain punches from a distance. It should be done in the range it's designed for, close up and when you've got his hands already trapped or as they're walking in as an intercept. It shouldn't be used as a hail Mary blitz from afar.

I LOVE trapping jabs with my lead hand, then i go into a hammer fist jab with it and then a stright right. It breaks the pace, especially because my muay thai coach teaches to parry their jab with your right hand and the throw with the right hand (orthodox). Or I'll angle to their left side and step in trapping their left hand down with a hammer fist then throw the same jab straight combo. I never did wing chun but we practiced similar trapping techniques at the hapkido school I went to great stuff when you practice it cause it really breaks the pace and flow for your opponent if they're not so quick to gain their flow and pace back 🙏🙏

i've always used Chain punching for making people go into defensive position in a disadvantage, and *that's* when you go into grappling or trapping or fake them out and then leg sweep, its very effective and gets so many people off guard for sure, its a great tool for pinning them down against a wall of when you're on top and they're on the guard, again forcing that devensive confused caotic state. works wonders, and if you get actually good at putting power behind them you might get a very good hit in which makes them even more weary of it going on.

I know the feeling until I sparred with someone who found a solution to that problem. He is a strong fighter, a veteran, in his mid 50's, and is in everybody's fight camp by invite or jokingly being mandatory; he got the nickname "Wildcard" due to him being so unpredictable and somehow powerful at the same time. The thing was he never told me what he did, so I ended up just studying his movements when he sparred with other people. Just thought he knew some really good freestyle boxing from then on, where he keeps his talents on what he does a secret. It's probably due to it being some military art as to why he won't tell anyone. All he said though finally from the question was "Use your imagination" and that it requires "emotional content," which told me everything in hindsight. The "emotional content" of course made me think down the line of Bruce Lee, Ip Man, and Wing Chun. It hit me like a brick what he did after watching a certain movie that had Wing Chun though, he was using Deer Horn and Butter Fly sword techniques in a boxing-esque manner by retrofitting all of the cut and slash attacks, and he just "imagined" his gloves were the weapon. The same way that Eskrima implements their stick attacks into their way of boxing. It made further sense to me because your weapons are always out of each other's way.

Hey, Jeff. Does the phrase "Rat Step" mean anything to you? It's when you're in a 60/40 or even 70/30 stance and lift the front foot just enough to let your weight pitch forward and then you just cinch up the back foot to match the distance covered. Just kind of "rat stepping" forward with it over and over. Try that type of foot work with the chain punch to keep your chin under control and to keep from over committing to the forward motion too much.

In my experience I never enter with Chain punches for the very reason jeff sais: Your head is lollipopping and you'll get hooked to pieces.
Also the chain punch are risky if you do then while the opponent has structure and forward pressure.
However if you disrupt your opponents balance/structure THEN chain punch you get a gap where you can hit a rapid CP that will often force your opponent on the retreat and from there you can do whatever you want.
As for the biu da, again I think its risky to enter with it. If that strike miss you are in great trouble. Jeff trapping the biceps to gain control first then fire strikes again allows for control so you can affect the opponents structure.
Wing chun proverb sais "On tui doy yat", or safety must come first and I think Jeff is following this principle when he thinks.
The biu da on the streets is easier to pull off though, because the opponent intends to take your head right off and often over commit when doing so.
But I'd still go for control before strike unless forced to do otherwise.

wing chun is not just technique its hard work hours a day and years of practice from the correct lineage. not even sure the chain punch is being done correctly here your supposed to center the punch and not do a rolling patty cake. Im assuming its because the gloves are huge and get in the way. The whole point of WC is to punch the opponent first and hard so it takes the gas out of them. You cant really see the effects here because your using gloves. So the viewers immediately think the boxer can always throw a harder smacking type attack.

Vitor Belfort boxing blitz has similar concept for those having trouble using the wing chun chain or JKD straight blasts. Oddly enough if you watch boxers such as Manny Pac and Lomachenko…they do employ some vertical punching combinations to set up hooks.

More than single techniques It would be really interesting to see an experienced MMA fighter or boxer/kickboxer learning incorporating and applying chi sao and chi gerk. If it works of course.

wing chun needs to stress offensive and defensive head movement and foot work. This will help avoid being on the center line and be an easy target. Also being off center line will help wing chun be better offensive attack. you can hit them but they cannot hit you. Also need to stress striking without blocking and trapping. not all situations require trapping and blocking

Also mma discussion wise... do you think... the chain punch can generate enough power vs a regular counter overhand or something? I would like to see it practiced more and see if its really effective as well as useful in hard stressful sparring environments. I feel the chain punch is more to overwhelming the opponent to get the advantage ... what is its counter... what is it good for and when to use it

I never use chain punch besides to train. It makes you faster with bridging and transitioning. But if you arent moving feet, hips, or transitioning and moving forward the chain punch is useless except in learning that stuff.

Last thing. Good wing chun looks different though I’ll be honest. The finger jab to the eye and throat have to be understood to really get a grip on it. Hand collection by GARY LAM. 18 hand PAK SAO. Some of the FONG METHOD of LEAD CONTROL and lastly. Dan Inosanto entries. Best way to learn the NEW WING CHUN STRUCTURE according to #brucelee 😉💥💥

I don't know if he should be doing chain punch as a blitz...I usually think of the chain punch as the end of a combo, not the beginning. Using it as sort of "suppressing fire" on the way end is very high risk. He's a phenomenal athlete though, so its hard to find anything he can't get to work at least sometimes.

WING CHUN IS NOT A TECHNIQUE BASED ART. LIKE KARATE. ITS A CONCEPT BASED ART. LIKE TAI CHI. Teach him the ambidextrous footwork of Wing Chun. Teach the 2 main concepts of Wing Chun... Chi sau & Chun choi(concepts not techniques. Chung choi is an idea, chain punches is a technique) & how to blend chi sau & in his boxing/Chung choi would be useful.

He should try to use the chainfist the way Kevin showed Wonderboy Thomson.
Using the chainfist after the first punch hits in 3 or 5 hit sets.
    Kevins lession, not mine.

If you watch Ali, when he would get an opponent close to the ropes, he would essentially battle punch except he also threw feints and overhands to go around jabs and set up his big right. If it works for the Greatest it works for me!

I don't know why the whole internet is always blowing up with taking it to MMA, or cage fight, all the time. Is wresting good enough, or boxing, wingchun, akido, brazillian jiujitsu, taekwondo, judo, kravmaga, shaolin kungfu... good enough??? NO, nothing will work against a MMA fighter, and everything works with an MMA fighter as long as it fits the game rules. The move is not unique to wingchun, and all high level martial arts teaches similar moves. Probably all the teachers copied from one to the other. And running away is the best! ;-) Thanks for great video.

I saw Jeff chans favorite off step cross ... I am a wing Chun fan actually very much and I know actual wing Chun. I do and don't like striking I recently got my ribs broken in a sucker punch to my ribs in jail ... I have never liked strikes as self defense because of the blood and hurting.
But .. I really like knowing and training it.
I loved the wing Chun point that by trapping you're actually just interested in closing the gap ...
Amazing point I'm not short but wing Chun is the perfect art for short people for that reason you always get in ip man or Mike Tyson range easy.
    Bruce Lee was amazing too!
The blocking and striking in wing Chun by itself is extremely worth knowing.
It's fun ... I just don't like to hurt and strikes should hurt ... That ... I dont like.
