    Nice to see a UFC fighter appreciating how Wing Chun can up their game. A lot of other videos talking about Wing Chun seem to be all about "myth busting" and showing how it's outdated or just doesn't work in modern contexts. I've never understood that mentality. All martial arts have strengths and weaknesses. A good fighter learns from what works, no matter where it comes from.

      To be fair, they are looking at a system as a total and not the individual techniques. Like small elements can work but a system as a whole could be broken.

      The issue with traditional Chinese martial art is that most of it didn't evolve and maybe even devolved.
      Due to a huge popularity and demand in the west many used it for exploitation and to just make money.
      You got lot of people who were teaching without ever being in a real fight themselves.
      It lacked competition and sparring which resulted into choreographed drilling, which I think watered down everything.
      Think Wing Chun just has to do a lot of catching up and polish in that regard to get back on track to evaluate what is effective and what is just to complicated fancy.

    • @Zcorck
      @Zcorck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think part of it is due to most people's experience with it only being in movies, whereas they've been able to see real-life application of MMA in stuff like UFC. In America, more than 72% (2020 CDC stat) are overweight or obese. In the remaining 28%, there's also a lot to cross out due to all the other physical activities that people engage in. So that leaves a very small amount of people in America who's been properly exposed to Kung Fu.
      But I think there's also a good amount that have had bad experiences due to being deceived by grifters, which there are in every field, which is why the proper ones would show off their lineages to prove that they're legit.
      There's also been a need for re-adjustment due to China being a 3rd world country for so long, only recently(from a historical perspective) becoming a developing nation.
      So you have a lot of practitioners being below a competitive weight class or just lacking a fit body. Moreover, a lot of Kung Fu are also lacking in fitness training to develop their bodies optimally.

      Thanks for mentioning it, I totally forgot.
      Think the insane focus on lineage did a lot of damage.
      It helped to avoid being challenged.
      My experience with multiple teachers was that training is almost pure theory.
      While other martial arts paid their dues and went in hard.

It's one of my favorite things to do sparring and is nice to make them hesitant to throw jabs. With how good Stephen already is at getting great explosive power without telegraphing it he can be even more of a monster with the vertical punch coming out of no where.

    I have been practicing a lot of wing Chun myself since I was like 8 and it's really nice to see someone use it and train it much more practically. A lot of people hate on wing Chun users saying it never can work but that's because a lot of people that train wing Chun never pressure test it.

      i don't particularly care that much about wing Chung (tkd/kick-boxer) but ill never completely right it off because i know any style can be used to great effect if the right athlete comes along and practice it in a pressure environment. it wont look as flowery and as pretty but it will be effective. remember how karate was looked at because of all the fake karate experts and the experts who never actually fight getting their ass beat, all it took was a few good karate practitioners to modify it test it and use it practically. As it turns out point karate is the best version of karate to use in mma due to its distance striking. so you never know.

In fact, the true Way of the Martial arts is to train so that these skills are useful at any time, and to teach these skills so that they will be useful in all things."
      And I think that it's not just in fighting or sports in general, but in all disciplines, that you need knowledge, compatibility with said discipline as well as understanding of how to apply that knowledge in order to excel in that field.

Only because i want to a Master and teach it to others. My biggest dream is to teach Security Guards, Police and even The Army of my country.😁👊👊💯. I can end a fight within seconds. I fight with softness and hardness at the same time and it works effectively😉. I love fighting soft though. You just don't get tired when u soften your fighting style. Doesn't matter what style you fight. People also call me the Second Bruce Lee because of my speed😁. I'm really really fast. Before you know it i'm already done fighting with you😉

It`s like the first sentence in every Wing Chun Shool I have ever been to: "We don`t sparr or fight, our style is too dangerous" And then they perfom a shitty stompkick to prove their point.... 🤣 But as one can see in this Video, Wing Chun is applyable to fighting.

    your wing chun content is dope, I remember for years ppl would be like "oh that doesn't work, its fake, etc." I never believed them bc about 20 yrs ago when I was in hs one of my teachers was a wing chun master and he had all the respect from the "troublemaker" kids cuz he would give them life advice but would also prove his techniques weren't fake, usually by demonstrating them on ppl lol. Anyways one time i wanted to see for myself so I asked if we could to light sparring in class (i was taking boxing at the time) and he demonstrated how much faster and stronger he was. I tried to parry his punch that he threw very casually, both of our forearms clashed, except im sure his was intentional, and I swear to god I thought he broke my forearm. I went down immediately in pain. Anyways he was a legend in school, and whenever someone would say wing chun doesn't work, I would think back to him and be like well it works for some ppl, and let me tell you I wouldn't want to go up against that teacher in a street fight lol.

    Finally someone who understands that the traditional Wing Chun stance is for weapon fighting. Finally! This man is very smart and knows what he's doing.
    Also Wing Chun is cool and is fast but it lacks power. It has some good traps and nice elbows, but the lack of power kills the style, sadly, and also the very short range. You're never gonna hit a fighter who's fast on his feet. That's why it's not effective against other combat styles. It's still awesome and fun to do, if you can find a teacher like this man, bro, go for it. Don't train MA because you want to beat up everyone. Train MA for health, for training and for enjoyment. Keep up the good work, very cool video!

      I agree with you, but I think wing chun is for really street fights and not just that, but I talk about suckerpunch, chest buming, you know... Angry man walks to you, or argue in your face, THAT is when wing chun works really well.. I had to use what I learned once, someone wanted to hook punch me, while I tryed to calm down a situation. His hads were in a laying neutral position, he wanted to hook me from there, with a wild punch, while we were facing close, I just hit his elbow pit, bicep with my forearm, (fook sau, biu jee) and pulled down his hand a bit right away with a step in, and my other arm I put on his chest (left arm on right hook, right arm on his chest) I didnt hit him, I asked what the fuck man, why, (they wanted to beat another guy not me first) then he tryed to hit me with his other arm, I pulled back my head a bit, I almost felt nothing from his hook, but I could feel it like a fly touches you on my jaw, I asked him if he is crazy or what again, then I saw his face with a big surprise on it, then the everyone walked away, someone else steped in. We practiced this in my wing chun school very much, aswell sem sanda, we had no problem with sptepping back, or a little wrestling... So I can tell you, wing chun worked for me, not just once, but in sparring, I rather use kickboxing or what ever... Wing Chun is really good if they walk into your personal space up close, and wing chun does not lack power, depends on how you do it, and even more importan, where you place your punch... I got broken ribs from wing chun punch it is no joke, but you need to really either whip it, step with it, like a power punch, turn with it, or using kinetic chain, and drop your weight a bit to it contracting your body, and drop your shoulders, elbow down and forward a bit. Sure, cross, and a big hook with a step is devastating, but wing chun punch can be also, if you place it good, and it is all nontelegraph...

      yeah the train for fun not to actually fight argument never really rings true to me. I don't have a problem with people who train because it's fun and don't care if it works so long as they are honest about it, it's a totally valid mentality, but training because you legitimately want to be able to hurt people who try to hurt you is equally valid, if not more so since fighting arts should be useful for fighting.

    Kinda think the short punch might be helpful for getting in shots on guys who are gonna grapple and wrestle.

    Wrestler wants to get in close to be able to shoot so shorter faster punches might helpe guys double think about if they want to go in for the clench... etc

    • @dimel1347
      @dimel1347 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not only the short punch...A grappler /wrestler going in for clench can be suicide against a W.C who has sparring experience.
      You dont want to get in close distance against a style that is focused around fast precision strikes in close distances from multiple angles and dirty low blows.
      They seem to have success against W.C styles only because many if not most W.C practisioners dont have much sparring experience and because of the controlled enviroment/rules.
      Also, in a real fight, the opponent will not wear these cute boxing competition gloves, so the strikes are gonna hurt. Also W.C works a lot with palms (not fingers or hand grabbing) and wearing these huge boxing gloves is very restricting.
      However, the caveat is that if a wrestler gets you down, you are basically hopeless with Wing Chun...unless you hit in forbidden areas but that is a questionable move even in real fights imo.

  • @moz5831
    @moz5831 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hmm. Are you familiar with Jack Demsey’s book Championship Boxing, because all this stuff about vertical jab thrown stiff, landing with three low knuckles etc. is in there, all which is pretty much gone in modern boxing (and for a very good reason)? He claims it to be from an earlier era when people where doing more bareknuckle fighting (Dempsey started basically as a bar room brawler) and I wonder if the western boxing and Chinese boxing had originally more in common than people think.
    Like for instance, I doubt those Wing Chun punches have whole lot of weight/power behind them, but maybe they are more to scrape and cut the face than knock out or break bone - just like in the old style of pugilism. Hitting a solid bone with bare knuckles the same force as you would with gloves is likely to end in a possibly unfixable hand injury. However, using these bareknuckle techniques in the ring with gloves on is going not going to end well, because the opponent simply don’t have much to fear from your punches and you get steamrolled.
    That back hand parry - jab was pretty slick, I’m going to try it next time some taller dude tries to keep me away with extended front hand. I think right hook could follow and it might be a knockout combo. Got to try it.

    People describe Wonder Boy as "nice." I think that greatly understates what is so excellent about his character. The man is humble. I don't mean that he devalues himself. He's confident in his abilities, and rightly so. But the striking (sorry) thing is that he doesn't devalue others. EVER. He regards others as worthwhile and deserving of respect, every single time, and it shows in everything he does. Notwithstanding all the martial arts excellence, THIS is the most important thing his father taught him.

    A lot of Southern Shaolin boxing is close quarter combat. Wing Chun is not the only effective fighting style out there. But as you can see, once you actually do the full contact and understand the techniques, then you understand Kung Fu works. In war time situations, these fights last less than 30 seconds. Just like samurai fights. The trapping and bridge crossing over is much faster in actual combat or fight than them sparring. This is why Kung Fu is the art of deception. Once you perfect your speed, agility and power. The opponent will lose before he blinks or moves his shoulder. Masters at high level when fighting, they’re extremely fast and do not move their shoulders at all. It’s all about angles, hips, low stance and your Dan tien. Power comes below your core. This is why when real authentic Kung Fu practitioner punch a bag, they use either sand, soy bean or iron ball bearings up to 300 lb bag. This is what Bruce Lee uses. This helps you strengthen your knuckles and improves your power and speed. Just like how Mike Tyson win his fights back in his prime and knocked out 6-7 ft 200-300lb boxers. He uses low stance and uses a lot of his hips and angles. Speed kills and you cannot defeat something that is moving way too fast for you. Kung fu is all about speed and power but most of all relaxation and at higher level, less of using muscle and more internal.

    Woah, this is actually like old style Jeet Kune Do. I myself practice Jeet Kune Do but over at my place, we don't do a lot of trapping and we scrapped Wing Chun Straight Blast. Instead, we use a lot of boxing staff like headmovement and others for defense etc. But we still keep it most Jeet Kune Do like the pendulum step, push step, sliding cross footwork and of course the vertical punch like the straight lead, backfist etc.

    if you pay attention people, if you hear what Kevin says wing chun is created for real self defence fight without rules, like fingers into the eyes, kicking in the groin, without preparation, wait or thinking about how to fight, it is just made for quick reaction in a situation when your adrenaline is too high and you have no another way to escape. Wing Chun is not made for competition.
