      Wing chun doesnt work with 16oz gloves. Thats like giving a judo guy 16oz gloves and tell him to do judo. Wing chun is no more than a close range grappling art that ends in strikes. More closer to judo and bjj than boxing. The chain punch is perform when the opponent backs away out of wing chun range. If your not connecting withthin 3 punches you lost it. Its not hammer fist its straight punches driving your opponent back with your base over your feet not leaning forward with your weight in front of your feet. Wing chun man doesnt clinch. Thats what biu gee for. Doing a chain punch from too far away your going to get shot on/taken down or long fist. I would love to see wing chun in ufc. Its a great addition to mma. i hope you can pull it off. Watch vitor belfort vs wanderlei silva ko.

    I love how Jeff naturally recognizes that backfist trapping is not practical and instead strikes with the front hand directly after the trap - which makes a lot more sense, except in Ving Tsun it is struck with a vertical fist instead of a cross
    better than 80 percent of the Wing Chun practitioners out there

    Jeff the JKD guys really love the chain punch, their version the straight blast literally has you blasting your opponent with chain punch les while doing the 50 yard dash to overwhelm them with punches, speed and force. They often do exactly what you did either clinch up and go to the ground or clinch up and blast with elbows and knees. It works amazing in sparring
    This is a great video.

    They need MMA gloves to exploit gaps better, and he needs to hold a long guard at all times, and put constant pressure on opponent like Tony Ferguson did with Pettis in UFC. Because then he comes into trapping range more often and can use wing chun's techniques more effectively. And if he's not gonna use wing chun's elbow payload, he'll need to innovate and use boxing hooks instead. Wing chun must keep that 'phone booth' pressure on at all times. No retreat!

    I've come to realize that alot of the trapping and chain punch techniques used in wing Chun can be used and incorporated in alot of other styles, altho I don't believe personally that wing Chun by itself is reliable and effective in real life scenarios. Not with the dynamic variables and better styles that can clearly outmatched it.. I guess Bruce Lee's philosophy still applies all these yrs later and it's beautiful. The chain punches are good for closing distance and can even be used to take opponents off balance and shift into grappling, the trapping as well looks very nice if you have good reflex and can see patterns quicker than the average individual.. all in all a good tool to add to the arsenal.

    the wing chun punches are just to weak and sloppy to work for any purpose to be honest
    perhaps their drills might even work for defence but not with those punches as follow up, it destroys the rest of the art
    those type of punches can't knock out or even interrupt someone from atacking you, the jab has waaay more power than the powershots from wing chun, everyone that feels the pace will just eat those weird punchs and land a strong one back
    part of the defence is making the oponent fear the consequences of geting close

      It's meant as a training exercise (speed and strength, structure) and the idea behind chain punching is continuous attack and flowing from one attack to the other. I'm still seeing it being taught by many as a "blitz" attack when that's not really how it's used.

    The human response to rapid attack flurries is not naturally effective. A lot of people actually do not have a good enough response to the flurry and just panic and cover up. U can also use this response defensively to have your partner panic when attacking. Its chaotic but does have a tactical purpose. At least from my experiences

    • @johnmaco
      @johnmaco ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely. That reaction happens due to lack of habit, since WC is one of the very few martial arts that throw punches so frequently in such a short time. Anyone who has received them knows how distracting they can be, block your vision, and make you defensive if you don't know how to react to them.
      Among WC practitioners, it is taught how to react to that wave of punches.

      @@edtheangler4930Sniping isn’t bad, also you don’t need a ton of punches if with a couple of shots you can knock down your opponent. I think a boxer would definitely try sniping, and if they feel like they’re giving up too much ground they’d probably just accept eating a couple of fast punches to land a powerful one, whereas an mma guy would probably just shoot for a double leg or something

    wing chun is not just technique its hard work hours a day and years of practice from the correct lineage. not even sure the chain punch is being done correctly here your supposed to center the punch and not do a rolling patty cake. Im assuming its because the gloves are huge and get in the way. The whole point of WC is to punch the opponent first and hard so it takes the gas out of them. You cant really see the effects here because your using gloves. So the viewers immediately think the boxer can always throw a harder smacking type attack.

      Hammerfist is effective, just not mainstream.
      As for the backfist, its angle of attack comes from the opposite side of the torso, so unlike a basic jab or cross it is harder to generate power from that backhand angle. It takes more coordination to do it properly with power.

    Now that Jeff had a taste of Wing Chun, time to set him up with a Francis Fong session. Regarding today's session I'd just comment that it's not good to initiate the chain punches from a distance. It should be done in the range it's designed for, close up and when you've got his hands already trapped or as they're walking in as an intercept. It shouldn't be used as a hail Mary blitz from afar.

      I know the feeling until I sparred with someone who found a solution to that problem. He is a strong fighter, a veteran, in his mid 50's, and is in everybody's fight camp by invite or jokingly being mandatory; he got the nickname "Wildcard" due to him being so unpredictable and somehow powerful at the same time. The thing was he never told me what he did, so I ended up just studying his movements when he sparred with other people. Just thought he knew some really good freestyle boxing from then on, where he keeps his talents on what he does a secret. It's probably due to it being some military art as to why he won't tell anyone. All he said though finally from the question was "Use your imagination" and that it requires "emotional content," which told me everything in hindsight. The "emotional content" of course made me think down the line of Bruce Lee, Ip Man, and Wing Chun. It hit me like a brick what he did after watching a certain movie that had Wing Chun though, he was using Deer Horn and Butter Fly sword techniques in a boxing-esque manner by retrofitting all of the cut and slash attacks, and he just "imagined" his gloves were the weapon. The same way that Eskrima implements their stick attacks into their way of boxing. It made further sense to me because your weapons are always out of each other's way.

Is wresting good enough, or boxing, wingchun, akido, brazillian jiujitsu, taekwondo, judo, kravmaga, shaolin kungfu... good enough??? NO, nothing will work against a MMA fighter, and everything works with an MMA fighter as long as it fits the game rules. The move is not unique to wingchun, and all high level martial arts teaches similar moves. Probably all the teachers copied from one to the other. And running away is the best! ;-) Thanks for great video.

    The problem with classical wing chun is there is NO POWER in the punches. The fundamental tenet of this system is you stay in one spot to execute the block and traps and the counter comes from a short distance. There is no hope of stopping your opponent if they are skilled fighters and can take shots. The second negative aspect of classical wing chun is lack of progressive footwork that gives you range about your opponent. Again, it seems to be about planting in place and responding at close range. Third is there is no grappling. There is no solution for clinch and how to deal with clinch and no takedowns or even decent small joint manipulation that is effective. I saw these problems back in the 1970's and this has been explained by Bruce Lee himself and later from Dan Inosanto who understood the reason why Bruce wanted to move beyond it and incorporate boxing, FMA and long range kicking. The only way to make classical wing chun useful is to find how to transition into grappling from the trap. The traps are good but the strike counters are pointless with no power. Ultimately, I think wing chun really is one-dimensional and only about hand fighting and is crying out for expansion.

  • @cassiuslives4807

    It just goes to show how alien concepts in Wing Chun are. Things like "springy energy" that is behind the "simultaneous attack and defence", or "power from the ground", "eating the horse" and that there isn't a "slip back" or "level change" once engaged are missing in the 15 mins crib notes explanations... especially since gloves change which techniques are usable. It shows how important it is to teach principles rather than techniques. Also missing were explanations of footwork which are boring to practice but essential for understanding how Wing Chun works. This was the best that could be done with a short explanation!

    Vitor Belfort boxing blitz has similar concept for those having trouble using the wing chun chain or JKD straight blasts. Oddly enough if you watch boxers such as Manny Pac and Lomachenko…they do employ some vertical punching combinations to set up hooks.

    More than single techniques It would be really interesting to see an experienced MMA fighter or boxer/kickboxer learning incorporating and applying chi sao and chi gerk. If it works of course.

    Great session. I know it's a matter of teacher/school technique and preference, but my teacher was always wary of counterpunchers off of a chain, so I've been taught to use it as a means to bridge the gap - throw it out, but with low expectations that it'll connect, mostly use it to get in contact with the opponent's arms. That, or use it as a finisher. Looking forward to more. Great attitudes, lots of respect

    This make me think that wing chun training or other traditional martial art training is to comserve tradition itself or the ideology. Sparring is a universal language in martial art means there's no tradition except the rule set they play at the sparring session. When in sparring any traditional martial art become one language. It's not boxing, karate, & wing chun again but become striking art. It's not judo, bjj, & aikido again but become grappling. No matter what your martial art when on sparring it become either striking, wrestling, or striking art. The matter here is who's better at doing it.

    wing chun needs to stress offensive and defensive head movement and foot work. This will help avoid being on the center line and be an easy target. Also being off center line will help wing chun be better offensive attack. you can hit them but they cannot hit you. Also need to stress striking without blocking and trapping. not all situations require trapping and blocking

    Hey Kevin, just want to say I love your content as it gives me a lot of time to reflect on my own Wing Chun journey and how I should go about improving. You give me a lot to think of when I train with my Sifu and give me the opportunity to seek out the knowledge one should feel confident in asking their teacher.
    P.S. I hope you do a cameo with the Karate Nerd!

    Can Jeff make the knife work?
    Or
    Can Jeff make boxing work?
    It's not can you make something work, it's: are you any good at it. I think Jeff isn't bad at all

    • @nathantheophilus4856
      @nathantheophilus4856 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's a valid title though because unlike boxing and knife there is a perceived ineffectivity to wing chun - especially with the lack of documented success of the style and the prevalence of fake masters getting ousted both in the western and in China.

    I feel the third concept works the best when you concentrate more on attacking than defending. If you wait until you block the opponent's strike, you are already too late, but if you see your opponent clearly throwing something with a good opening to use, striking at that opening before the opponent's strike lands and then blocking is more likely to work.

    • @thevillageyid

      @@thevillageyid its all about conditioning. If you notice a habit of your opponent you can try to counter it, but you can't be ready for every strike from every angle at all times, they say the human mind can only track 7 things at a time.

    One question. When trapping and closing the distance why use your fist instead of your elbow? Is it personal preference, or for safety while training? I'm not a martial artist tbh, so maybe the answer is obvious lol.

    • @muhaiminakbar4472
      @muhaiminakbar4472 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably because of distance of elbow. After all, elbow are easy to block and dodge if you didn't forcefully make them close to you.

    Hey, Jeff. Does the phrase "Rat Step" mean anything to you? It's when you're in a 60/40 or even 70/30 stance and lift the front foot just enough to let your weight pitch forward and then you just cinch up the back foot to match the distance covered. Just kind of "rat stepping" forward with it over and over. Try that type of foot work with the chain punch to keep your chin under control and to keep from over committing to the forward motion too much.

    • @jckingsley
      @jckingsley ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm betting Sifu Fong has heard "rat step" before, and Kevin is probably familiar with that terminology as well. It's slang in southern style circles for that kind of shuffle step.
