It is not recommended to keep a raccoon as a pet for several reasons. While raccoons may appear cute and friendly, they are wild animals and can become aggressive as they mature. They have sharp teeth and claws and can cause serious injury to their owners or other pets. Raccoons also have a strong instinct to forage for food and may destroy household items or escape from their enclosures in search of food.

My mom had a raccoon named Boo Boo back in the late 80s and all throughout the 90s. Her mom and siblings had been hit by a car, so my grandfather brought her home. She would ride on my moms shoulder in the car, so my mom and aunt absolutely loved her. RIP Boo Boo (86’-99’)

Had a raccoon in house when it was young, mother had gotten killed by a car. It was brought to our home, by a friend knowing we'd help it& release at good age.
Guess it liked our care. After release, didn't see for near 2 years.
Then heard a noise one night on our porch, looked out window to see Ricky Ratty . It decided to live on our porch at night , we told friends not to go near window area. Where Ricky stayed, there was a chair and some other things to hide behind, porch was mostly enclosed.
We could come& go and didn't bother anyone, regardless of time of day. Might hear a light chatter at times. Guessing just felt safe near us, never tried getting in nor harming our cats or dogs. 😊😊
Could even go outside & sit, without him bothering anyone.

Not only the refrigerator but cabinets and even some doors. I've had a few raccoons and they are a handful and no not make the best pets they are super smart cute and affectionate but they get into everything and the have never ending energy. You can't keep them in a cage they hate a cage this will only make them aggressive and will fight you not to get into the cage unless you have a cage the size of a bedroom. Besides it curl to keep these animals in a small cage they truly hate it. When I had raccoons I had locks on everything because they broke every dish in my cabinets opened every box of food throw everything on the floor got into thr fridge to eat everything and what the didn't eat went on the floor yes they are cute but hard to handle they are into everything and I mean everything. Plus they are called bandits for a reason they will steal anything they like of yours jewelry keepsakes you name it if it looks interesting to them they will steal it lol...
Cute but a handful like have a 2 year old going throw the worse terrible 2's on steroids lol... I would still take a rescue in and give it a home but they just aren't good pets for most people. I'm not going to run out a buy one I would only take in a rescue that needs a home.

As long as the raccoon wasn’t abducted, or taken from the wild, no harm done. A rescued or befriended animal is what a pet is, wether they started out wild or not. I think some people forget that cats and dogs all started out as wild, before forming a symbiosis with humans. Animals and Humans can be freinds.

Like holes in your ceiling, wall, couch, deck type wild. Because why take the stairs when you can claw and gnaw yourself a short cut through the drywall. Worst is then people try and release them into the wild and they are used to being fed so may come back to your house acting aggressive if not fed or maybe to a lucky neighbors house instead. They can't find food in your yard anymore? Your cat or small dog will do. Real cute though.

When the kits mature, the become (literally) wild and can be extremely destructive. Better to make your relationship part of their outdoor, wild life experience. They’d get into everything once they figured out how to open your drawers and cupboards, and if not kept properly stimulated, may start tearing up your house. My guess is that you have to make sure it doesn’t get bored by providing lots of toys and puzzles for it.

They are crazy smart and it makes them little Houdinis when it comes to breaking out or into things. If anyone REALLY wants a unique or exotic pet, I would recommend volunteering somewhere that rescues that animal. The only way to really know if want a particular live thing in your home 24/7 is to actually go spend TONS of time with them and experts that can really teach you and give you the opportunity to practice feeding/handling and training. Plus you might end up realizing that you can't actually house it in a way it will be happy, but still able to befriend and bond with them. Plus helping wildlife rescues is really it's own reward.

Well he cut the tree down and literally two seconds after he heard babies inside and walked closer and felt horrible (even though he didn’t know bc these were full grown tall ass trees) when he seen the momma and one baby got killed. He scooped up the other three babies and got a huge crate and made them a warm place to have. He grabbed some replacement milk and tiny bottles and fed them. He called me and asked if I’d take one in and I didn’t hesitate. Miss my boy ❤ He was definitely a sneaky bandit but he definitely could make you laugh and they definitely are the best at cuddles 🥰

I had one whose mom got run over, littered boxed trained him right away. Set up a dog cage with a hammock and litter box and left the door open. He was a great pet until about 8 months when the mating season came. Got too mean, we let him out to go roam freely and he stopped coming back so often. Cool pet, but no way to get rabies shots for them, and I've read they are prone to getting rabies. I've been told my experience with them is typical, just thought I'd share.

They lived with them for 2 years but started getting too wild and getting into everything and climbing everywhere so they let them out. They still come around because they leave food out for them. When they come the daughter goes out and the racoons keep their distance but they always keep looking back at her. Then the racoons come over to my unit and fight and scream all night. Raccoons are like this as juveniles, but t as soon as the reach puberty they become wild and become like a wild raccoon again. They will tear up your house, ignore their litter training and spread their urine everywhere to mark their territory, they will become extremely defensive and aggressive and may even attack their owners. as much as these raccoons in the video look like a good pet, raccoons should not be kept as pets. if you want a pet that lives up to what is described on the video, try a ferret instead. Having raised 5 raccoons, people need to be aware they are wild animals first and have instincts. They are like having a perpetual two year old in you home at all times and are curious about everything. Anyone getting a raccoon must realize that they can be a handful and even mean at times. If you don't have a clue about taking care of a wild animal, these are not your pets.
