Met her in a mall in SanAntonio… 85-86’.. I was in the Army, her mom sat next to me on a bench, Lita walked up and we chatted, she asked about my hair, liked the fact I was military and knew who she was. Very nice folks

Of course she can play, and pretty well. She’s not Yngwie or EVH but she’s better than almost anyone talking shit in this thread.
She was the lead guitarist for the Runaways, and the fact she was a hell of a lot better than Joan Jett (rhythm guitar) was likely one of the several issues as to why she and Joan never got among.

Lita is the real deal. I have been a fan since the 80's and have many times over the decades. She plays and sings, not an easy thing to do for anyone. If it weren't for her we wouldn't have such great acts as Halestorm or The Warning.

It's interesting how many folks are angry she had a successful career. Is she the best guitar player ever? No. Did she claim to be? No. Did anybody market her as such? No. She had/has what the music entertainment industry deemed relevant, at the time, and capitalized on it. She can definitely play the guitar. She can definitely sing while playing the guitar. The cherry on top is she is also a pretty lady who knows how to play the part of rockstar on stage. It's not rocket science. She had a dream and pursued it. I'm happy for her.
For a person to be butt hurt because he or she can (allegedly) play guitar better than Lita Ford, is, well, childish. Just sayin'

Kim Fowley put the Runaways together billed as a all girl band....this in a male dominated industry. And a crooked one at that!...still is...always has been. An all girl band was a big thing back then....so yeah some novelty involved, but they still rocked!
And inspired many other girls to start bands. It all exploded after that!👍😜

Looks help, but it's the music that keeps them buying the albums. If you've ever watched American Idol, you'd remember that Simon took a lot of criticism for not looking at the performers, but he WAS paying attention. You can distract the audience from mediocre playing/singing with great stage presence, so the reason he looked the other way was to se what it really sounded like. Pretty and average don't count for anything if your purpose is to sell your music.

Back in the day, there were countless talented guitar players who could master everything-from Hendrix to Stevie to Van Halen, and maybe even better than the stars themselves. Money was scarce, but that didn't stop us. We set up our gear, tuned our guitars, and hit the stage. It didn't matter if you were a man or a woman; if you could hit those notes, you earned your place.
Those were the days when the crowds went wild, and I'm proud to say I was part of it. We played our hearts out, and the energy from the audience fueled us. It was about the music, the passion, and the thrill of connecting with people through our songs. Looking back, those memories are cherished-they remind me of the magic that happens when talent and dedication collide.

Much respect to Lita as a player AND a pioneer, when there were few women lead players. My late wife, Ronni Crooks, was the “other” female guitarist/endorser at Crate Amps for years. She and Lita looked a lot alike and they would both be at trade shows. Crate Amps wanted the two of them to do a U.S. clinic (amp demo) tour back in the mid-90s but wanted my wife to do most of the playing because she was an amazing player. Lita got mad and threw a guitar at the head of Crate Amps when he suggested the idea, so it never happened. Sadly, my Ex was run over by a drunk, off duty NYC cop, the day after we returned from playing in Europe. She was actually a fan of Lita’s and even covered one of her tunes.

There was a descending run she did twice towards the end of her jam that sounded pretty much exactly like Highway Star. I point this out because in her early years with the Runaways she met and became "friends" with Ritchie Blackmore. She mentioned once in an interview back in the 80s that Blackmore taught her the snake charmer scale (which I'm sure has a double meaning, if you catch my drift) and she probably showed him a few things (non guitar related) in return.

She definitely can play and has her own distinctive playing style just like most guitarist.
I don’t understand why anyone would doubt her ability to play the guitar, she is certainly not the only proficient, nor the first professional female guitarist either. I wonder who recorded Lita while she was just trying out a random guitar (likely, a BC Rich). Having listened to this recording, I was VERY impressed. Some great chops and licks happenin' there. Yet, not going into overkill mode. I have always been a fan of hers. How cool it is that she has maintained an ongoing career in the music industry, and is now likely viewed as a legend!!!

Thank you for this video. I always liked Lita Ford. I thought she played very well. She had great stage presence. To top it all off, she was a stone-cold fox. I am glad she had some success. The music industry is a tough business. It chews people up and spits them out.

For the type of metal she did it was not critical to be the best technical player in the world. Putting on a good show and having good songs is way more important. She had the looks and stage presence and was a decent rocker but that doesn't mean she had it easy by any means. She is a trooper beyond countless other better musician's that could never get to her level.

I was Lita's tech for 3 years, 85, 86, 87, and part of 88. I had to retire since my vision was failing enough to no longer be able to see on dark stages. I can tell you with all certainty that she played everything, all the time. Her ear was golden for dialing in tone on any amp. It was the best 3 or so years of my life. Back then she traveled with so many guitars, my work was cutout for me. Bernie Rico gave her anything she wanted; so I don't blame her. She was incredible to work for, I've worked with other bands while she took time off tour legs. She was the most approachable, serious artist ever. Thank you for featuring her. New generations need to learn who she is, and all that she's accomplished.

Nah, her peak was Kiss Me Deadly, or the ballad with Ozzy, in the mid 80’s.
I met her, when she lived in Panama City Beach. She would play at a bar once and awhile, snd I saw her play the lead from a few songs. She’s not amazing, but she was able to play some 80’s metal leads, and blues ones. She mostly played rhythm by then. It was the late 90’s.

Lita Ford's primarily a singer/songwriter, and came up during the 70s, when pentatonics were king, so of course she's not going to shred like Steve Vai, nor does she have to. She put herself out there at a time when the hard rock / metal scene was a complete sausage party, and rocked her way to the top!

In the Runaways she sounded like she was heavily influenced by Ace Frehley of KISS because that was what was popular back in the 70's, but during her solo career she sounded like she was influenced by guitar shredders of the 80's because that what was popular at the time.
