Thanks! In the newspaper world of old, where you might shoot a roll at multiple assignments, tonal range was something achieved under the enlarger, not necessarily exposed into the film! We used a Royalprint processor for prints, so the only 'adjustments' were from multiple different contrast filters on different areas of the print.
I was working for a daily newspaper. The negatives should have remained in their archive, but the paper was sold and all the negatives were thrown in the dumpster! One of my photogs got them from the trash man and sent them back to me. Now the Museum wants the archive and I'm making prints for them.
