  • Portable trailer winch - Installing a Harbor Freight Badland 9000 winch on a PJ tilt deck trailer. Building a trailer winch mount was a little different on this one because most of the deck tilts but there's a short stationary section that doesn't. I had to find a way to attach the winch without creating a major binding point when the trailer is tipped up. Using the Harbor Freight winch mount I came up with a system that works well for my needs.

Why not install the receiver vertically down in front plate of tilt deck just leaving a flush square hole facing up and drill hole in side to insert pin, when tilt deck is down pin will be locked in, hidden and secure from theft. Also that square hole could be used for some other application like an anchor point for something that gets hauled more often, maybe side by side or small tractor.

really smart. i wonder if adding another d ring to the back would allow for more stability, instead of top rail.

Seems like that puts the winch too far back to get a longer vehicle all the way onto the trailer. The roller idea seems to be the best so the winch can be set at the front of the deck.

Great approach and I like the final change. That is what I was thinking, there should be another way to shorten it and using the chain is a good solution. This will allow you to pull the tractor on if it fails to start, but I guess the bucket would still be an issue if it was on the ground - no way to raise it up when pulling it up the ramp. Like you say, having a portable wench makes it useful in other situations.

I never seem to be able to do a heavy pull with my 3000lbs winch, it seems to clip some overload protection on my Kawasaki mule. After it sits for a few minutes it works again, but not sure why I can't pull more weight. I think my battery is too small. Thanks for showing, and nice trailer!

Only thing that came to my mind is if you happen to bend that bolt, it could be aggravating to get out. I am looking for a new trailer and I sure wish receiver mounts came on them. I have an old Ramsey quick mount winch I used this way for 20 years. Will be upgrading winches soon.

Would jumper cable clamps be sufficient for connecting the winch to the truck battery? Or it should have bolted clamp attachments? I’m thinking of using jumper cable with clamps on battery and quick connects to the winch.

2 rings welded to the 2 anchor points and stick the hitch tube thru the ring and bolt goes in.. IF the hitch tube does not fit, make one or use a smaller size... personally I would make one because you would have short distance of couple. OR do it your way 😎

It's a 2014 PJ tilt deck. Registration says model T5182. I don't think PJ builds that one anymore but I know a lot of manufacturers build something similar. They work slick.

Same winch I have on my 20ft car trailer works great

Do you have a dedicated battery or run a jump pack? I'm thinking about picking up a small deep cycle battery so I have a better power source.

@@adamj8293 I just run 20ft 2 gauge jumper cables to my battery of my truck and leave it running while loading something

You should of just mounted that removable winch mount to the front of your car trailer. and not in the middle of the trailer
