In fear the walking dead Both Nick and troy go into collecting Adrenal brain stems they both even eat one and nick even eats two... From 'Fresh' walkers the question becomes clear now, why do you think they were not both infected as they both ate them?
we dont know the entire military is dead, i think part of the military and government is still active but not trying to protect anyone, they are just trying to survive using what they can and trying to find a cure
Along with the Navy you think people on aircraft carriers would populate unpopulated islands there's plenty of large in the habitable islands that no one lives on in the world with ships and resources like an air Force place like Easter island could be civilization in this post-apocalyptic world using the military to take over small islands and even large one from third world countries killing off all trace of walkers civilization in extremely northern places would be still around because walkers would freeze solid and be not much of a threat most of the year and reanimation takes a few you would think it wouldn't have spread quickly enough to be completely world wide instructions on how to kill them and stop them would have been figured out quickly and been transmitted all over the world

How is it unrealistic there's no cause? It happened overnight. A bunch of people die, turn, attack, chaos. Wouldn't even give scientists enough time to study it, let alone come up with answers. Fact is, Walking Dead is a show where we only know as much as the characters know, which is why we didn't know people come back when they die regardless of being bit until Shane came back. Knowing the details of the virus really ruins the series. We should never know more than than the characters do.
When Rick asks a scientist (in season 1, or 2) What caused this? Right before his death he tells Rick,"Its in all of us." This makes me think something in our bodies was triggered by government tested virus.
I think the whole show is just a dream that ricks having. It makes sense because it all started with him waking up in a hospital, maybe he’s still there but he’s just in a coma.
Here's my theory, the creators have no cause for the outbreak and never will reveal one, they wanted to make a zombie show and milk it for as long as possible. If everyone dies turns into a zombie it creates a never ending cycle of man and zombie.
They can reveal it soon as I fear isn't great and will end within a few seasons. It has few likeable characters, the ones that are most likeable die. It can be never ending if it reaches a rate where humans can still survive and reproduce faster than they turn.

It does seem supernatural because the walkers stay alive seemingly forever (unless someone kills them). They should run out of energy and just die (or re-die). But they don't. This seems supernatural.

*I think Kirkman has finally 'backslidden' on this one.* The greater BULK of the population is indeed dead. However, I, myself, have always maintained that out of 350 million living in the US in 2010, when the TV show started, that there had to be at least a few million left live between Canada, Mexico & The US. (3 to maybe 5 or 6 million) That way it would make sense that you have some States (and areas) with small groups of people (OR EVEN TOTALLY VOID of them) while here and there you'd find places with REALLY LARGE numbers of people surviving. Like how we now understand there had to have been SEVERAL HUNDRED survivors in the Alexandrian County area (where our story takes place) to the 50,000 in Ohio (according to the latest Kirkman Comic story arc: The Commonwealth). You can't have a good show that goes on for several seasons without PEOPLE: LIVING people.
TWD takes place in a universe where the pop culture zombie was never created. Therefore, at the start (as seen in FTWD) people just saw walkers as "sick people who need help" and not as a direct threat. The military would have been easily overrun because they're trained to take bodyshots, not the direct headshots required to kill them. Also unknown to them at the time was that EVERYONE is infected and comes back, so they would have also inadvertently created more walkers when they bombed populated areas.
Only thing I would perhaps 'correct' about the Military (as a Veteran) is once the Sharpshooters & Experts among us saw those things NOT GOING DOWN from a body shot, they would figure out real quick that you have to take headshots (even the National Guard would have figured that out and they aren't on duty 24/7 like Regular Army, Marines, etc...)

Yeah, I've noticed that too. The walkers don't just eat humans, but animals as well, and of course animals die all the time, naturally or not. So this, whatever it is, isn't transmitted to animals at all. I mean there aren't many infectious diseases that can pass between animal and humans and infect both. So what is different between us and the animals that is closest in relation to us genetically, that this thing infects us but does not infect them? Why is it us and not them? If this were mother nature then it would probably have to do with some gene or marker or mechanism within us that isn't present within them. But, this could also be explained by the other theories as well, so really the fact that their aren't any animal zombies doesn't really help us in narrowing down how the zombies came to be. Aliens: They are targeting the most dominate species on the planet, the one most likely to fight them if they come to take over. God/Supernatural: punishment or again targeting the ones most likely to put up most of a fight or hinder them in some way. Well ok, the space one doesn't really have a plausible explanation for this, because whatever happens, the results should affect more species than just humans. That one would be the least biased against humans, as would mother nature actually, unless again it's targeted to something humans have that nothing else on the planet does. And then we have the man theory. Well, we all know the answer to that one don't we.
I think it happened too quickly (from what I've seen) to be microbial, especially since everyone is infected. More likely, in my mind, it has to be a prion disease (misfolded protein). Maybe some protein that all humans make was changed by an environmental factor that affected the whole world, thus when that factor went global, everyone started making this prion protein that created this disease. It would explain a lot... How everyone got infected quickly, how it is nearly impossible so far to cure, how it is hard to find out what it is (prion proteins have the same amino acid make up, but just fold different... So same primary structure, but different secondary and tertiary structures). It also helps that a lot of prion diseases affect the brain--"mad cow disease" for example. I am just now pondering this, so there is a lot of holes probably.
Although this makes sense from a story perspective, it makes little sense at to how prion diseases work. Unraveled proteins are ultimately what a prion is and by their very nature, a prion disease will modify other protein structures to also be pulled, unraveled and thus more prions exist. With that being said, prions cannot be effects by our own immune system. They do not function within the microbial world within our body. Ultimately, it is the body’s immune system that causes a disease to become dormant. Viruses and bacteria are really the only possibilities, as parasites or fungus tend to also have a poor reaction from the immune system.
I'm not Christian, but I really like the idea that Hell is full but Heaven has been closed off and so now when you die you're purgatorialy trapped within your own body, yet unable to control what it does. I think that makes everything so much more terrifying. I saw a theory a while back saying essentially the same thing under the guise of "The Earth is Haunted." So cool.

Many animals will eat literally anything they can chew or swallow. What nature does is on an almost infinite, unimaginable scale in terms of predictability. It is for this reason I believe nature is the most grounded explanation to go with but still second to from space because something that hit our planet in the air all at once from the vastness of space really could happen if it was atmospheric. Also an asteroid could do the same thing but the virus wouldn’t be instantaneous and as omnipresent as it appears in the show but we don’t get to see outside of the states so the latter explanation really could be at least plausible. All I know is it’s a million times better than Rick waking up from his coma theory...omg I would burn AMC and kirkman if they did that haha
In terms to how the virus works, I believe the virus mimics decay to break down the "unnecessary" body cells to provide energy to the walker host. This could begin when someone is bitten and receives active infection, leading to the symptoms that bitten individuals experience. Eventually, limbs will start to fail as the bodies will run out of "excess" cells as the host is ironically cannibalised. Since cells will be broken down at a nanoscopic level, the energy released could transfer very efficiently to the host, keeping them active for a very long time

I just watched s1e1 last night again. It has a great emotional draw from the characters. I did notice the dead wife of Morgan twisting the door knob to where she remembered her family being there. Also, the connection with Morgan and Rick was cool. Now it's as if they don't even know each other. I'd like to see more of a BOND between them, as like old pals from the jump.
My favorite theory is the supernatural one since that is actually a reason why Zombies exist in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. But the only thing that defeats this theory is it doesn't affect corpses pre-outbreak. In Undead Nightmare, you'd be a zombie even if you died prior to outbreak.
Clearly it's a case of reality being a computer simulation and the grad student that is running it got bored. No other explanation makes any sense. Except that it's just a show and it doesn't have to make sense.

I think it has to be man-made. Whether intentional or by mistake it has to be man-made. Because it only attacks humans. We've never seen a reanimated deer we've never seen a reanimated cow are animated Birds. This is specific to the homo sapien species which to me means it had to be genetically created only to attack the Homosapien species
I think it was a genetic marker that switched on at the same time and thats why the entire planet was infected at the same time. It also could explain why only humans are infected; we are the only species with 46 chromosomes.(there are a few others but the people in TWD world would not know it because they would not have the opportunity to see these animals in their natural habitat as they are indigenous to other parts of the world, and it those species still may not be affected because humans have other differences in their genetic make up.)
Some good refreshing ideas there but I think that idea would need some work to be plausible possibly. Genetic markers don’t “switch on” in any species at a precise time. Even in micro biology or micro evolution, it still takes thousands of years for such markers to activate widely. For this idea to hold you would be suggesting that space time is consciously self aware and somewhat vicariously wanting to rid nature of a species at an exact point. Like it’s a solid idea on the outside but it sort of falls apart upon inspection but I think you deffo have something cool with the markers and chromosomes isolating humans (just like many viruses do) maybe if the writers were using your initial idea but something EXTERNAL sets off this marker inside us? That could maybe work? Like if this thing was always in us at some sort of sub atomic level and then an external factor, be it man made or not, kicks it into action but such an event would be incredibly hard to explain genetically and why it’s never happened before blah blah but of all the ideas I’ve seen, I think yours is one of the best most grounded ideas. Sounds like a cop out but for me alien (not aliens just not from earth) and asteroid or space bourne virus attacking the atmosphere are the most viable explanations. A conversation Hershel has with Billy in the comics actually points towards Supernatural. Out of the last book of the Bible, Revelation. Sure it's not really how the passage should be taken, but it certainly could be a clue to why the dead are rising and walking.
And then Hershel said at the end of season two 'When Christ promised the resurrection of the dead, I thought he had something a little different in mind.' I know that was intended to be something of an attempt at humour on his part but regardless, the biblical references from Hershel may in fact be Kirkman alluding to something surrounding the virus' origin. I go with Aliens. An Alien race that is super into zombie apocalypse movies and by chance found a planet with inhabitants that look fascinatingly similar to them just without the weird head ridges that serve no purpose. unfortunately these inhabitants where very aggressive and militaritic and posed a threat in the case they developed means of inter-stellar travel so they decided to create a special virus, set up cameras and start a TV show for their home planet and called it "The walking dead Aliens".
In George Romero's classic, Night of the Living Dead, it was it was theorized that a Russian Venusion probe that was contaminated and destroyed before it got back to earth, yet parts of it entered into our atmosphere, caused that event. I believe a simalier event is what caused the Walker on the apocalypse on the show.
To your point at around 2:48 "just the fact that everyone is infected means its already out of control" also indicates that in a real life similar situation, the entire surviving population would need to be under constant surveillance. This point is also seen in the prison with the flu. There isnt any safety as any one of your group could die during the night and re-animate

When I started watching "Fear the Walking Dead", I kept seeing little visual clues that it was in the water. By having the pathogen distributed by water, you would get near 100% infection rate.
The meteor bringing biological organisms is the best theory in my opinion since we already know meteors are capable of this. And it's believable that if this meteor burned up in our atmosphere it could disperse the biological organisms which would then be rained down on humanity from the sky above all across the world.
I always wondered why they never went to Washington DC. I know Eugene lied about being connected to scientist and the government. I believe Alexandria and Rick should head to Washington DC to see if there is possibly any truth about government officials being there. Alexandria is literally a few minutes away from Washington DC. So since we've actually seen a HELO twice in the show, I'm guessing the TV show's COMMONWEALTH will either be at ARLINGTON; at one of MANY Military bases in Virginia *OR* across the Potomac in the DC Area

I think it's mother nature. That is the creepiest and most scary explanation. Also, it's not just death that causes you to turn. If you remember, there was the major character of the vet who owned the farm getting bitten and they chopped off his limb saving him. There was another minor character that was saved the same way when bitten on the arm. This suggest that the bites in some way cause the virus or whatever it is to activate and the character to turn even from the most minor bite. Just sayin...

I like the idea that it could have been man-made. It is hinted in other Zombie media that the military wanted to use re-animated corpses to their advantage, like Army of the Dead. There is also the theory that it was a mutated disease, in Zombieland, Mad Cow mutated into Mad Human & World War Z, A mutated variant of Rabies. Maybe a chemical spill, virus, mutated disease, it could be any of these, we may never know!

We actually gamed this when I was in the Army, back in the late1980's. It involved a mutated or weaponized form of the rabies virus. Strange coincidence that zombies weren't really in popular culture so much at that time huh?

I agree with your analysis. The fact that the writer has said that TWD is set in an "alternative reality" where "zombie myth" doesn't exist means that he can make his own rules up. Bearing in mind the contagion doesn't behave like an infectious agent in the traditional way, both in terms of transmission and epidemiology, then a supernatural effect is the only realistic (sic) mechanism for depicting the situation as we see it. This is rather lovely (although unsatisfying) as of course this is exactly the mechanisms our forefathers adopted in explaining the world around them with no knowledge of science. It's frustrating but not quite as bad as The Road which again lacked sufficient backstory for the scientist in me despite being a magnificent book.

Some resolution and I think a cure or the quest to a cure would bring millions of viewers who have dropped off back because to find a cure you would need to know the origin to a degree. How is it unrealistic there's no cause? It happened overnight. A bunch of people die, turn, attack, chaos. Wouldn't even give scientists enough time to study it, let alone come up with answers. Fact is, Walking Dead is a show where we only know as much as the characters know, which is why we didn't know people come back when they die regardless of being bit until Shane came back. Knowing the details of the virus really ruins the series. We should never know more than than the characters do.

Here's my theory, the creators have no cause for the outbreak and never will reveal one, they wanted to make a zombie show and milk it for as long as possible. If everyone dies turns into a zombie it creates a never ending cycle of man and zombie.

*I think Kirkman has finally 'backslidden' on this one.* The greater BULK of the population is indeed dead.
However, I, myself, have always maintained that out of 350 million living in the US in 2010, when the TV show started, that there had to be at least a few million left live between Canada, Mexico & The US. (3 to maybe 5 or 6 million) That way it would make sense that you have some States (and areas) with small groups of people (OR EVEN TOTALLY VOID of them) while here and there you'd find places with REALLY LARGE numbers of people surviving. Like how we now understand there had to have been SEVERAL HUNDRED survivors in the Alexandrian County area (where our story takes place) to the 50,000 in Ohio (according to the latest Kirkman Comic story arc: The Commonwealth). You can't have a good show that goes on for several seasons without PEOPLE: LIVING people.
TWD takes place in a universe where the pop culture zombie was never created. Therefore, at the start (as seen in FTWD) people just saw walkers as "sick people who need help" and not as a direct threat. The military would have been easily overrun because they're trained to take bodyshots, not the direct headshots required to kill them. Also unknown to them at the time was that EVERYONE is infected and comes back, so they would have also inadvertently created more walkers when they bombed populated areas.
Only thing I would perhaps 'correct' about the Military (as a Veteran) is once the Sharpshooters & Experts among us saw those things NOT GOING DOWN from a body shot, they would figure out real quick that you have to take headshots (even the National Guard would have figured that out and they aren't on duty 24/7 like Regular Army, Marines, etc...)

Yeah, I've noticed that too. The walkers don't just eat humans, but animals as well, and of course animals die all the time, naturally or not. So this, whatever it is, isn't transmitted to animals at all. I mean there aren't many infectious diseases that can pass between animal and humans and infect both. So what is different between us and the animals that is closest in relation to us genetically, that this thing infects us but does not infect them? Why is it us and not them? If this were mother nature then it would probably have to do with some gene or marker or mechanism within us that isn't present within them. But, this could also be explained by the other theories as well, so really the fact that their aren't any animal zombies doesn't really help us in narrowing down how the zombies came to be. Aliens: They are targeting the most dominate species on the planet, the one most likely to fight them if they come to take over. God/Supernatural: punishment or again targeting the ones most likely to put up most of a fight or hinder them in some way. Well ok, the space one doesn't really have a plausible explanation for this, because whatever happens, the results should affect more species than just humans. That one would be the least biased against humans, as would mother nature actually, unless again it's targeted to something humans have that nothing else on the planet does. And then we have the man theory. Well, we all know the answer to that one don't we.

I think it happened too quickly (from what I've seen) to be microbial, especially since everyone is infected. More likely, in my mind, it has to be a prion disease (misfolded protein). Maybe some protein that all humans make was changed by an environmental factor that affected the whole world, thus when that factor went global, everyone started making this prion protein that created this disease. It would explain a lot... How everyone got infected quickly, how it is nearly impossible so far to cure, how it is hard to find out what it is (prion proteins have the same amino acid make up, but just fold different... So same primary structure, but different secondary and tertiary structures). It also helps that a lot of prion diseases affect the brain--"mad cow disease" for example.

Although this makes sense from a story perspective, it makes little sense at to how prion diseases work. Unraveled proteins are ultimately what a prion is and by their very nature, a prion disease will modify other protein structures to also be pulled, unraveled and thus more prions exist.
With that being said, prions cannot be effects by our own immune system. They do not function within the microbial world within our body.
Ultimately, it is the body’s immune system that causes a disease to become dormant. Viruses and bacteria are really the only possibilities, as parasites or fungus tend to also have a poor reaction from the immune system.

What does that have to do with nature? I can’t see any connection between eating habits and Mother Nature?? What do you mean exactly bro? Just in case I’m missing something? Many animals will eat literally anything they can chew or swallow. What nature does is on an almost infinite, unimaginable scale in terms of predictability. It is for this reason I believe nature is the most grounded explanation to go with but still second to from space because something that hit our planet in the air all at once from the vastness of space really could happen if it was atmospheric. Also an asteroid could do the same thing but the virus wouldn’t be instantaneous and as omnipresent as it appears in the show but we don’t get to see outside of the states so the latter explanation really could be at least plausible. All I know is it’s a million times better than Rick waking up from his coma theory...omg I would burn AMC and kirkman if they did that haha
In terms to how the virus works, I believe the virus mimics decay to break down the "unnecessary" body cells to provide energy to the walker host. This could begin when someone is bitten and receives active infection, leading to the symptoms that bitten individuals experience. Eventually, limbs will start to fail as the bodies will run out of "excess" cells as the host is ironically cannibalised. Since cells will be broken down at a nanoscopic level, the energy released could transfer very efficiently to the host, keeping them active for a very long time

I just watched s1e1 last night again. It has a great emotional draw from the characters. I did notice the dead wife of Morgan twisting the door knob to where she remembered her family being there. Also, the connection with Morgan and Rick was cool. Now it's as if they don't even know each other. I'd like to see more of a BOND between them, as like old pals from the jump.
My favorite theory is the supernatural one since that is actually a reason why Zombies exist in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. But the only thing that defeats this theory is it doesn't affect corpses pre-outbreak. In Undead Nightmare, you'd be a zombie even if you died prior to outbreak.
Clearly it's a case of reality being a computer simulation and the grad student that is running it got bored. No other explanation makes any sense. Except that it's just a show and it doesn't have to make sense.

I think it was a genetic marker that switched on at the same time and thats why the entire planet was infected at the same time. It also could explain why only humans are infected; we are the only species with 46 chromosomes.(there are a few others but the people in TWD world would not know it because they would not have the opportunity to see these animals in their natural habitat as they are indigenous to other parts of the world, and it those species still may not be affected because humans have other differences in their genetic make up.)

Some good refreshing ideas there but I think that idea would need some work to be plausible possibly. Genetic markers don’t “switch on” in any species at a precise time. Even in micro biology or micro evolution, it still takes thousands of years for such markers to activate widely. For this idea to hold you would be suggesting that space time is consciously self aware and somewhat vicariously wanting to rid nature of a species at an exact point. Like it’s a solid idea on the outside but it sort of falls apart upon inspection but I think you deffo have something cool with the markers and chromosomes isolating humans (just like many viruses do) maybe if the writers were using your initial idea but something EXTERNAL sets off this marker inside us? That could maybe work? Like if this thing was always in us at some sort of sub atomic level and then an external factor, be it man made or not, kicks it into action but such an event would be incredibly hard to explain genetically and why it’s never happened before blah blah but of all the ideas I’ve seen, I think yours is one of the best most grounded ideas. Sounds like a cop out but for me alien (not aliens just not from earth) and asteroid or space bourne virus attacking the atmosphere are the most viable explanations. A conversation Hershel has with Billy in the comics actually points towards Supernatural. Out of the last book of the Bible, Revelation. Sure it's not really how the passage should be taken, but it certainly could be a clue to why the dead are rising and walking.
And then Hershel said at the end of season two 'When Christ promised the resurrection of the dead, I thought he had something a little different in mind.' I know that was intended to be something of an attempt at humour on his part but regardless, the biblical references from Hershel may in fact be Kirkman alluding to something surrounding the virus' origin. In George Romero's classic, Night of the Living Dead, it was it was theorized that a Russian Venusion probe that was contaminated and destroyed before it got back to earth, yet parts of it entered into our atmosphere, caused that event. When I started watching "Fear the Walking Dead", I kept seeing little visual clues that it was in
the water. By having the pathogen distributed by water, you would get near 100% infection rate.
The meteor bringing biological organisms is the best theory in my opinion since we already know meteors are capable of this. And it's believable that if this meteor burned up in our atmosphere it could disperse the biological organisms which would then be rained down on humanity from the sky above all across the world.

It's gotta be supernatural purely based on the fact that all these years later now the show is wrapped up the walkers are still around, they cannot be physically alive or capable of moving after so many years through any stretch of the imagination
All i know is when the scientist whispers in ricks ear he said its air born and if you die by anything you will still come out as a walker
Tbh by day 80ish of the apocalypse, people would have figured it out on their own really. People would still die not because of being bitten but because we all "expire".
I know he said space spore on Twitter, but to me that really goes into science fiction, so he was probably pulling out chain. World Beyond gives the same theory in a military flashback. Someone inhaled gas from a meteor and got on a plane and started infecting everyone. I would love for them to narrow it down, but I am not sure it's better to know.

I think it's mother nature. That is the creepiest and most scary explanation. Also, it's not just death that causes you to turn. If you remember, there was the major character of the vet who owned the farm getting bitten and they chopped off his limb saving him. There was another minor character that was saved the same way when bitten on the arm. This suggest that the bites in some way cause the virus or whatever it is to activate and the character to turn even from the most minor bite. Just sayin...

Yeah, could be. But the walkers also go after animals as well, so mother nature must be trying to wipe out a lot of species, not just humans. Though, the animals don't reanimate when they die, so they are probably just collateral damage. Mother nature made a system that works too well, and she wasn't able to refine it so only humans get it in the neck? Yeah, with how detailed and meticulous mother nature is, I highly doubt that. An extinction level event for multiple species on the planet. Well, mother nature has always been a bitch, forcing everything to either evolve or die. I guess this is just another example. But man what a cruel way to wipe out your own. I mean, we come from this planet same as everything else. She could have just made a disease that just kills us, not reanimates us as well. Again, if this theory is correct, then seriously what a bitch.

I like the idea that it could have been man-made. It is hinted in other Zombie media that the military wanted to use re-animated corpses to their advantage, like Army of the Dead. There is also the theory that it was a mutated disease, in Zombieland, Mad Cow mutated into Mad Human & World War Z, A mutated variant of Rabies. Maybe a chemical spill, virus, mutated disease, it could be any of these, we may never know!

The Real Dewayne That makes no sense. The only way there could be an "end of days" is if either the earth or the sun blows up. What does that have to do with an extinction level global pandemic?
I always thought with a wide spread pandemic to escalate that quickly it would most likely be something in the water.

We actually gamed this when I was in the Army, back in the late1980's. It involved a mutated or weaponized form of the rabies virus. Strange coincidence that zombies weren't really in popular culture so much at that time huh?
i think it might be some form of spores, released onto earth and spread out, meaning anyone who breathes, breathed in the spores, infecting them, and ultimately taking over when they die
I agree with your analysis. The fact that the writer has said that TWD is set in an "alternative reality" where "zombie myth" doesn't exist means that he can make his own rules up. Bearing in mind the contagion doesn't behave like an infectious agent in the traditional way, both in terms of transmission and epidemiology, then a supernatural effect is the only realistic (sic) mechanism for depicting the situation as we see it. This is rather lovely (although unsatisfying) as of course this is exactly the mechanisms our forefathers adopted in explaining the world around them with no knowledge of science. It's frustrating but not quite as bad as The Road which again lacked sufficient backstory for the scientist in me despite being a magnificent book.

In short what I believe is that something from space(perhaps an alien spore) was trapped in the ice in Antartica and as the planet warmed up due to global warming, the virus leaked into the ocean and eventually contaminated the drinking water. So if and when a person drank water, they would become infected and reanimate upon their death, whenever that may be

For how I see it the virus or whatever it is acts like a reanimation due to the zombies not just falling apart within a few months of deterioration flesh. The walkers just continue to "live" and hunt none reanimated individual.
