    I can see the US military having trouble with 28 Days Later style infected/zombies, but there’s NO way the military fails against TWD zombies that can’t keep up with a senior citizen using a walker.

      There's soo many zombies that there's no end to it. The military could fire a bullet every second of every day for an entire year, and if every one of those bullets killed a zombie, you will have only killed 31 million zombies. But you're not going to kill zombies that fast at a regular rate. Not even close. I'd imagine there are pockets of military alive though, even if they are just doing nothing but sitting at their bases. Aircraft carriers would definitely be the most self sustaining places, able to have power, fresh water, all the amenities, aircraft to scavenge. But infections could spread there too.

      The problem with twd is that no matter how you die you make more of them. Natural causes, wars, suicide, etc would just make millions or thousands of walkers worldwide. The military can't prevent that.

      @@peoplez129 you seem to be ignoring the prospect of bombs, miniguns, helicopters, jets, and tanks. The military could kill walkers one at a time, if they were stupid. Though since they travel in herds, and get clumped up very easily, wouldn't be too hard to bomb them, throw grenades at them, shoot mortars, light them on fire... The military really just has so many options when it comes to this, I dont see the walkers standing a chance in the long run. The military would only get better at dealing with them as time went on. Also fun fact: There actually is a defense plan in case of a zombie apocalypse, wild but look it up.

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@what.6099 The point is, it's a numbers game. Even if a tank wipes out 100 zombies in one blast....if more than 100 seconds passes before they get to kill another zombie, then they are behind that 1 a second figure, which I already pointed out that after, would only equal 30 million zombies. Of course, it won't happen that on the clock, BUT the point is, if the entire military can't kill at least 1 zombie a second on average, perpetually, day and night, for several years straight, then it's going to take even longer than that. That's the problem. Those sheer numbers of zombies to kill in a full blown zombie apocalypse, takes a very long time.

      It really depends on the zombie types.
      Resident Evil bio weapons? We are screwed. Some of them can survive about anything but a direct nuke to the face.
      Dying Light? We are screwed once volatiles evolve to ignore UV light.
      Walking Dead? It will be a mess, since every dead person becomes a zombie, but it will be bearable.
      Etc.
      It is a balance of how tough/contagious/fast/intelligent zombies are. You get at least 2-3 of these at once and we are nothing but doomed

    I remember that the military in World War Z was initially overrun, but not to the point where they disbanded and the country fell apart. They retreated back across the Rocky Mountains, since mountains and other natural barriers are very effective at containing zombies (for instance, zombies can't cross mountains, because being dead means they have no body heat and will therefore freeze completely solid when trying to cross through the colder parts.) They eventually regrouped and started moving east to reclaim territory, and after training and equipping to fight zombies, the hardest things they found to deal with were survivor strongholds, which they would demand rejoin them and the government or else be considered secessionists whom they would take by force, and what they called "LaMOEs", of Lame-o's, which stood for "Last Man On Earth." Basically survivalists who had figured the world was over and the United States didn't exist as an entity anymore, and who were almost universally hostile to armed humans by that point. They had soldiers equipped and trained for "classic" human vs human combat to deal with those groups.

Like the only way this could happen were every SOP, General Order, Special Order, and plan were suspended in the DoD. Our government might be idiots, but the military operates on a whole different level. Hell, today, we literally have plans on how to deal with like six different kinds of zombies. lol

    as somebody in the military, he has some points. Military in the US, is about 1% of the population. Not understanding whats going on and wasting resources would happen in the first 2 maybe 3. Worry for family is bound to happen. However, one thing the Military dose is communicate very well, and hurry up and waits. While the police would get over run, a fully equipped task force could take out a zombie horde. It wouldn't take long at all to figure out to aim for the head. Hell, the military today shoots differently then spaying and praying. We'd find out rather quickly where to shoot. Heavy munitions would only be used at first against attacking hoards on bases. Till we fully understood what was going on. After that, things would be mop up. It wouldn't take a ton of time to figure out noise drew them in. People trapped behind infested lines, and we'd listen to civilian encounters leaning everything possible about this threat as quickly as possible.
    I'd like to mention that the Government has already thought of how to handle this. Government loves control. I'm sure that if a zombie outbreak happened, the Government would be fine.

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      But you're assuming that the military is unaffected, which it wouldn't be. The military would, initially, be in something of a state of chaos as people on the bases all over the country would fall sick, die, and turn so then the military would spend time trying get the bases back under control. Then, they're going to be busy accessing how bad things are, how many people they've lost, who they've lost and trying to reorganize the chain of command to fill in the gaps left by dead COs. After that, they're going not just going to rush out and start taking on walkers, not without at least an outline of a plan and taking time to gather all the resources they need. Lastly, if the outbreak occured on a weekend or a holiday then there's going to be even more time lost as units, once they get the word, scramble to try round up all of their troops, many of whom might be in town and caught in the madness there and unable to get back to base. It's not like all military personnel are on duty 24/7 or all live on base, ready to go at a moment's notice.

    • @idunbeezasmart1
      @idunbeezasmart1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +124

      @@Riceball01 You're correct, but the problem always comes back to 'how did we end up here'? That is where all zombie stories fall apart. It would be impossible for an anomaly, such as the zombie virus, to go undetected long enough to reach the critical mass needed to create a horde. All levels of government and health research would be all over it like a fat kid on a candy bar. They'd know everything they'd need to know, i.e. how to kill them, before the zeds ever reached unmanageable numbers.
      On the other hand, if the virus would happen to achieve critical mass and creating vast hordes that could over run the military, the military would simply withdraw from the area and consolidate its resources. At no point would the military be put into a situation where they would be caught out and surrounded. That almost never happens in war, against human militaries, so it sure as hell isn't going to happen against mindless drones.

      If the forces know what they're dealing with they could stand a chance. But would anyone even believe there's a zombie apocalypse? And by the time they did they'd just nuke the cities infected if it wasn't in numerous places at once. But they'd sooner nuke a city than waste infantry. It's be realistic to expect a nuke occurring if it meant containment.

      Some military planners actually wrote a counter zombie plan. It's all in fun but reads just like a real-world US military plan Called CONPLAN 8888. This fictitious plan was created by junior military officers undergoing training related to the Department of Defense’s Joint Operational Planning and Execution System (JOPES), the formalized process by which the Department conducts all contingency planning and execution. In an effort to learn the JOPES process, and to do so in a more interesting way, the students were assigned this completely fictitious scenario and directed to use JOPES to develop a written contingency plan. Using this fictitious scenario avoided concerns over the use of classified information, it resolved sensitivity to using real-world nations or scenarios, and it better engaged the students. www.dmt-nexus.me/users/cosmicspore/Zombie.pdf

      Do they have a better shot at saving/protecting their families alone or with their team? You wouldn't have large numbers of AWOL soldiers for this reason alone. The same logic applies to when countries attack countries. Soldiers in poland still showed up and fought Hitler even when their families were in danger. Why? The army was their best chance to save the people they loved. The army would be setting up safe zones. AWOL soldiers would likely be barred from entry. Their families too.

      It’s something like 150000 a day globally, likely much more if the disease itself causes death in a certain portion of the population. And then MUCH more when the deaths cause healthcare centers to fall, and healthcare to be abandoned when we realize that death results in this process. People would isolate when ill, for fear of being killed by a terrified populace. People don’t get how fast death rates would spike in that scenario, and create an ever ramping increase in walkers. And ALL in civilian population centers.

    I was active duty in the Marines for 4 years. I can 100% see how the military could get overwhelmed. First off, we're not machines. If something like this happened, half the military would go take care of their families first, especially if the city is collapsing. Also, without command structure, the military would splinter into groups of rogue individuals just trying to survive. I don't think the zombies would win that easily, though. Even the military who went home would still be killing them. Also, we're taught to shoot 2 to the chest one to the head, so seeing the 2 to the chest not work over and over again would make everyone automatically go for just head shots.

      Considering that most high population counties in metro areas have around 100k-300k individuals even a 10% walker population in every county could quickly overwelm neighborhoods and local police. Crashes would block highways, causing chaos, chocking the entire interstate system very quickly. By the time the military came around they wouldve been dealing with atleast 100k walkers in every major city at minimum, with many more coming in with random people panicking, looting, shootings from paranoia, people commiting suicide at the sight of zombies eating someone or dumb people approaching a walker not understanding they were zombies not some cracked out person. I think its so interesting to imagine how it went down but the creators always fail to show just how bad the panic wouldve been aside from riots & random police interactions w walkers.

    1. Separation: if the army is too spread out, it could get overrun in small pockets at the time. And if the orders stop comming, units will cease to operate normally.
    2. Supplies: if no one is making bullets and machine parts, you will eventually run out.
    3. Morale: soldiers would eventally collapse due to low morale, or due to the urge to see their family (presumably causing a lot of desertion and lack of cohesion)
    4. Other groups of humans want their supplies and attack them
    5. Etc (many other reasons)
    6. Conflicting orders: what ever is left of the chain of commands might fight over what step they should take/ struggle of who's in charge, crippeling the army's effectiveness.

    In the book World War Z the military confronting the zombies was one of the most interesting chapters. Basically they wanted to put on this huge PR stunt, to show off how well they are handling the outbreak. They make this plan of bottlenecking the horde and while the media films them , they proceed to make the soldier do useless things such as dig ditches and make sandbag fortifications all while wearing the most expensive looking gear that made them half dead from the heat by the time zombies showed up. The soldier being interviewed for the story says that they made them bring all this expensive gear but severly underestimated the hordes size, so they had all these fansy suits , weapons and machinery but not enough ammo or fuel. Disaster creeps in real slow , kinda like how a frog won't know it's being cooked alive if temperature is being increaced gradually. First zombies show up and they get absolutely shreded , more come same thing happens, everyone seems in high spirits and this repeats for a while , with the military blasting them away with expensive explosives, rockets and so on . Next thing you know those fansy explosives run out and it's up to the soldiers and tanks. They fight for a while and realize that not only is the income of zombies not stopping , it's getting bigger and bigger. After more time they start running out of bullets and panic sets in, all the soldiers are conected with a modern combat system that let's them know where they are and talk freely, so panic spreads like a wild fire. All order breaks down and the fortifications gets overun , the end.
    The second time the military confronts the zombies in the book is long after the outbreak . They pretty much had to reform their whole way of fighting , returning to formation combat like in the civil war times. Each army had a token song they would atract the zombies with. They would form up and blast the speakers to atract every zombie for miles. The army from that particular chapter were using Iron Maiden The trooper as their song. Imagine what a cool scene that would make. The book is honestly so awsome i don't know how they managed to butcher the movie.

      If the military was defeated, it would be defeated through attrition and desertion, essentially the slow collapse of the logistics system that keeps soldiers fed, watered, and supplied with war material.
      I could see official resistance collapsing, but after a couple years, as the power grids in the last few safe zones built around ammunition supply points failed.

      A lot of people would get arrogant, and wouldn't give the threat the caution it needs. They'd get complacent, redirect more military to their own private security, spend more money on trying to convince people it isn't a problem, then use the walkers as bioweapons against their enemies, thus creating even more of a problem.

      Agreed. I've thought of this and think The walking Dead: stronghold would be a good title.
      There are several places where this can happen. I think the prime place would be VA hospital in salt lake City Utah. Combined with Mormons influence in the state, including their disaster preparedness standards, Utah would stand a chance better than any other state. Given the layout of VA hospital in salt lake it could easily be made into a stronghold as it is surrounded by iron fences.
      Several main factors that make me think salt lake City could successfully create a stronghold is.
      1. It is the state capital in a red state and there are in a large amount of gun owners and veterans.
      Here we have and a large number of storehouses a food and supplies that the Mormons keep, not to mention every woman household is supposed to have a stockpile of food and other supplies.
      There are several military bases in this area including camp Williams which house has the 19th special forces group.
      The salt lake VA is one of the three finest in the country; and most bite victims would be going to the University hospital, salt lake regional hospital and the Mormon hospital as opposed to VA hospital, which does not have a full ER like regular hospitals.
      Yes this would make one hellacious TV series showing how veterans and the military along with the general population deal with this issue and eventually provide a provisional government.
      Something like this would explain what happened to Rick. Hate to admit that not all groups would adhere to their oath of service. But I think for this series we would have a group that does.

If they didn’t then they become bogged down with protecting civilians who are possibly at risk or bitten and next thing you know, the walkers appear from the inside or having to stand their ground against a horde to protect slow civilians from escaping.

The dead in military hospitals rising up and attacking probably caused massive casualties in secure areas. Soldiers who died in the field would have gotten back up in full gear making them harder to shoot. I think this would likely happen in real life too. The dead don't rise, it isn't something anyone is actually prepared for. Yes, they will need fuel and supplies but a tank is an armoured box which is practical and hard to destroy without the right equipment. the only reason tank crews could need to come out is for fuel supplies and food/water and then they can move to a safe location to join up with other survivors. It also makes no sense why the tank crew have turned in the first series as they would be isolated and are strictly told to never exit the tank in combat situations unless the tank is hit and tanking heavy fire

    Setting up perimeter defenses is a common mindset. These guys had what, two lookouts in an exposed tower platform? We would place them on buildings, binoculars and silenced rifles for picking off and scouting enemy movements and positions. Our guns rarely hit the fences like that, and we select our targets. Spraying is a waste of bullets unless you are far enough away yet near enough to shoot many enemies in their backsides without fear of bullet deflection or them turning around on you. A standard soldier has many rounds of ammunition carried for their rifle and sidearm. Two grenades a soldier, a short-range receiver and squad based tactics would have won the day. Police forces needed to deploy armored police in armored vehicles while staying in cover, not advancing on civilians with a simple club/baton and riot shield. These batons need at least a blade on the end for slicing and stabbing. Flamethrowers and napalm should be allowed in these circumstances as an exception to the war accords for crowd control of infected and dead areas. Steel gateways with bard wire and machinegun posts as well as a few heavily armed guards in front to secure any uninfected citizens seeking shelter. Lights are to be shined at least for a half mile ahead of the pathway, with a patrol of at least two squads always rounding the perimeters, both outside and inside. Many tactics could be used here for this type of situation. Parks and stadiums, small residential divisions with stone or brick walls and villages could be used very effectively for a limited amount of time before moving towards a new locale.

    @GRBoi1993 5 ปีที่แล้ว +74

    I was in the army/ng for a hot minute and my experience is that there’s a looooot of incompetent leaders in high ranks of the military and government. There’s a decent chance that in this specific scenario the walkers could get the upper hand, that all said I also think that once people started making the connection that the head or full corporal destruction was the way to go, things would turn around pretty fast or at least stablise the situation in hold outs. The military also knew in FTWD that reanimating happens regardless of cause of death so in these holdouts and field hospitals strict protocols would be put in place either on a military wide scale or by individual units commanders on the advice of the chief doctors. I imagine the seriously sick and injured may well be seen as liabilities as opposed to people to save, sadly.
    So while I have poor confidence in the leadership of our military (particularly in the combat mainline elements of the marines and army), I do think they would’ve adapted fairly quickly and with some high degree of effectiveness because at least the zombies are incapable of strategising and organising.
    The leadership would’ve been purged by means of natural selection and those who were capable of dealing with the crisis would have eventually risen to positions of command by default. I think there’d still be a lot of casualties that could be avoided but because we have officers and NCOs that care more about police calling parking lots, hazing new recruits, and being politically correct in the press (I’m relatively socially liberal don’t @ me) but eventually those people would die bc of their stupidity, run away, or be removed by their betters or by troops and civilians who are sick of being lead to destruction.

Sure some may be more focused on aircraft. Some may be more focused on drones, but they’ll all have enough of everything to support the base.

      Guess you haven't done any time in uniform saying such. Ft Sam Houston for instance is the Army's chief medical post, responsible for training of medical personnel. It's not a post w/much in the way of combat arms troops actually assigned and little reason to have much beyond some small arms/limited ammo for weapons quals for some of the cadre/MPs/admin people. Not sure if Ft Sam supports any Guard units which would change ammunition/supply asset amounts so there is THAT factor which could change things
      Most AF bases have similar setups, Navy maybe depends on if they have many Marines or say Seebees (construction units)...

What if someone in the military gets a staph infection? Do you treat him, or kill him on the spot? What’s the average age and health of a General?

      One of the theories of the disease is it was developed to deal with battle field trauma or a longevity booster that had horrible consequences that keeps the subject alive to be surgically repaired and or regenerated IF they get treatment and IV administered high levels of nourishment. So they are being maintained by the disease and slowly rotting depending on how much they eat.

      Its some kind of thing with the virus...
      keep in mind, its a corpse... a reanimated corpse... but still a corpse...
      you see animal corpses disintegrating on the highway all the time... exposed to the elements non-stop definitely causes tissue to disintegrate. Skin, muscle, tendons, etc.. the point im getting at is the zombies are shambling because their bodies(the muscle, tissue, etc) their deteriorating. Which should also be applying to jaw bones and the muscles needed for biting...but i digress
      A corpse, exposed to the elements, without means of restoring itself would still decay to nothingness within a months time(3-4 weeks). HOWEVER. The zombie lore has some general unwritten protection against exposure to the elements. Zombie apocalypse wouldnt be dramatic if it all can blow over in about a month though, eh?

I’d honestly be surprised if more than 20% would have been killed, and the majority of that would be in the initial confusion of Zombies being a thing (assuming zombies had never been in pop culture)

  • @isakaldazwulfazizsunus7564
    @isakaldazwulfazizsunus7564 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    What I've gathered is that fresh walkers are more aggressive and more nimble than the rotten walkers that seem to make up the majority of what the various crews of the show have to face later on. On top of that, the military didn't initially understand that they had to shoot them in the head and they used loud weapons. Also, gathering massive numbers of people in hopes of curing them or just to control their movements in the initial phases helped form massive herds that have been an endless source of fear throughout the show. Also, they didn't know that everyone was infected, meaning that they could easily get jumped by the walkers after losing someone.
    Between that and the fact that civilization just collapses if the wrong people die in a short period of time, that would've broken the army's morale.

  • @tannerboth5796

    Fun little fact about military conduct to consider: headshots are frowned upon, due to many reasons such as it being difficult to ID a body with no head/disfigured face, low likelihood of a successful hit etc. Even snipers are told to avoid it where possible. Standard training teaches to aim for center mass. Now consider zombie biology and what is required to fully kill one... Im inclined to think that this indoctrinated training and mantality betrayed them.
