- The cast of The Last of Us sat down to catch up with BBC Radio 1’s film critic Ali Plumb to talk about bringing one of the most iconic video games in recent years to life on TV.
Pedro tells us about his nephews’ not so calm response to finding out he was going to be in the show, Bella talks about trying to get those iconic scenes just right, and show creator Craig Mazin let’s us know how surreal it is bringing a Clicker to life.
Also, Bella and Pedro geek out about The Worst Witch.
The Last of Us is available from 16th January on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW.

Honestly, Bella is damn lucky to have Pedro as her acting partner in such a big series and their chemistry is the best part- onscreen and offscreen. He must've been such a comfort for her during that press tour.

I can totally see why Bella Ramsey was cast as Ellie. Her personality shines and she absolutely has some Ellie in her.
She's got the mix. I heard a few moments in the episode where the writing took over, and her acting had to catch up, but it only reminded me of the times I had to "shift gears" to catch up with changing situations in reality. I won't describe specifics so as not to spoil. She's better than "good enough."

@@sgtroach1510 How is Arcane overrated? The first Sonic movie was definitely surprising but maybe Arcane just isn't your thing. To take a MOBA game, even with the lore it has, and turn it into that show is pretty much amazing. Arcane appeals to a much more specific audience, but it has gotten pretty high praise almost universally. I would need to see specific examples of why it's overrated to really consider that argument.

It actually brings a tear to my eye that The Last Of Us has been adapted to live action so perfectly. I have been waiting for an adaptation for nearly 10 years since the game came out and not only does it look amazing but Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are PERFECTLY a cast as Joel and Ellie.

However anyone who knows enough about gaming is that aside from the very few games like TLOU most are b grade in writing quality. Resident Evil which people name as a bad game to movie example is cringe and b grade in its writing quality

He's a great interviewer. Must be refreshing for some of these interviewees to actually get some different non-repatative questions when they're doing these press runs.
Ali plumb is incredible as an interviewer, there are very few if any that are better!
The funniest time I"ve seen was during the Witcher Season 2, the actors of Ciri/Yennefer (Freya/Anya) were like "OMG YOU'RE INTERVIEWING US, WE WATCH ALL YOUR INTERVIEWS YOU'RE SO COOL".

I believe it will be considered one of the best shows of all time.. at least if they stay true to the game and based on the first episode which was great.
This game (to me) is one of the most beautiful stories created in video games over the last 10 years, and I am so happy to see it getting the mainstream recognition with this adaptation airing ❤❤❤

Testament to good writing / adaptation from the source material + good direction. That's all you need. If the script notes and dialogue conveys the emotion the original was going for, it's going to be like that in acting 100%.
That first ep was perfect and had me hooked. The casting was amazingly done.
i only wish they didnt put the entire first game in 1 season with 9 episodes i want to see more joel and ellie stuff :/

I also wish they released the whole season at once so I don’t have to wait a week to watch the next episode every time.. it’s killing me.. I’ve waited for this show for so long and now after watching the first episode I can’t take the waiting anymore.. I just want to see more.
It’s an amazing video game (top 3 video games of all time in my opinion) and based of the first episode this series is going to be incredible and go down in history as one of the best tv series of all time..

As a veteran gamer (I’m late 40s), I’ve seen everything the gaming industry has given us from a story telling perspective. It always saddens me that non-gamers miss out on epic groundbreaking tales and lore. I hope this wakes the movie industry into adequately portraying some of these narrative masterpieces.
Absolutely. Goes for readers too, as I’m both equally passionately, it seems like life without these two things must be soo dull. Not in a bad way, but like there’s so many stories and lessons in books and games and it would be sad to miss them❤
I love the story of the Last of Us to the point that everyone I know who has watched/heard of the show has approached me to say something like 'hey this is based off that game you like, right?' and it's so nice to see a whole new audience of people experience something amazing now that it's in a more accessible medium for them. Btw, if either of you are willing to give suggestions for your favorite books/games that evoke emotions like tlou I'd love to hear them!
Bella is very funny and so engaging. Pedro’s Joel is more serious, but she gets him to laugh. I love this show.
Pedro is easily one of the best, most down to earth, real human beings doing his thing in Hollywood. He’s a real one in an industry full of fakes. Respect
Every role I've seen Pedro Pascal in I've thought he would make a wonderful Joel. I'm happy his nephews encouraged him to accept the role. TLOU is my personal favorite game, and I appreciate I wasn't pandered to with references to the game. The shots inside the vehicle were perfect and done with respect to their origin.

Talking about the nod to the games, the scene where Tommy Joel and Sarah are driving through downtown, the camera is focused in the same position as it was in the game, and it does not move from that angle unless its to show Sarah looking behind them, which also feels like a video game camera. Some serious detail from the games there.

I loved the subtle changes from the game. As someone who knows this game inside and out from shot to shot, it was refreshing to see the variation and artistic detail they put into it to change it from a user view to a filming view

Watched the first episode this morning and was blown away multiple times already.
I played the first game in 2013 and have mentioned for years to people that of all the games I've played in my life The Last Of Us has the best story and character development I've ever seen and this first episode was amazing the intro with the talk show panel was incredible and everything so far has been amazing , I was excited when I heard HBO was making this a show and was impressed when I seen the first trailer so I have had high expectations for this series for awhile and after this first episode it has completely lived up to it so far.
Craig Manzin is so into this TV show, he truly loved working on it.
Only game to ever make me cry, even worse because it came out not long after my daughter was born. The show is off to a 10/10 start. Excited to keep watching.

Back when Bella was cast as Ellie, everyone mentioned knowing her from GOT and then there was me who remembered her from Worst Witch which was one of my all time fav shows. The way Mr. Pascal nails every single role he takes is incredible.
I am so excited for this! I love both of them and I really love the whole casting of it. Especially that Ashley and Troy are in it as well. From what I've seen it's going to be awesome. I know they've made a couple of changes but I don't think they're too much of an impact. As long as an adaptation stays true to the source material changes are fine. Game and TV are different media and what you can do in a game is different to TV and vice versa. I can't wait!

How can anyone not love Pedtro Pascal, can't wait for Mando season 3 either.
They articulated it perfectly showrunners and actors. Filling in tiny holes extending and expanding parts that could've been strained or restricted in 2013 video game story telling, it's a great way to view the story as fan without the exertion of fighting every antagonist on the video game journey. Finally enjoying the story with snacks in one hand and a viewing partner in the other as well as the world because the story felt like a private journey only the gaming community knew.
4:28 I feel like this is so important. It is so easy to just make a reference and be done with it no matter how well it for the story or the context. To me that’s why Arcane was so good. They managed to have characters ”do the thing” but in a way that made perfect sense for the show. Seems like they’ll do the same thing here :)
