  • Because 25% of United Methodist Churches have disaffiliated it could be tempting to think that the disaffiliation process is over. On today’s podcast I talk with Tom Lambrecht, VP of Good News, about the General Conference that is happening in Charlotte right now. We talk about the legislative proposals on the table that will enable churches to be faithful to their biblical convictions.

    Church leaders have allowed a very small percentage of the alphabet group to destroy the church. Disaffection doesn’t count for the individual families that have left, knowing the alphabet group would change the church. As far as regionalism, that will drive the final nail on the cross.

    I am a member of a church that disaffiliated. We were tired of all the conflict and distraction going on in the UMC. We wanted a church where the focus was on the Bible, the Word of God, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. He is correct that some states turned disaffiliation into a chance to extort money from the churches trying to disaffiliate. Thank goodness our conference was not one of those.

    I wonder if Tom’s view has changed at all now that regionalization passed by a margin so wide that it wouldn’t have been changed if every missing delegate had voted against it. Probably not, but a guy can dream.

    • @dalethomas5392
      @dalethomas5392 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "There is a lot of crowing by regionalization supporters that today’s votes passed by a margin larger than the number of absent international delegates. But part of being a delegate is being present for the discernment and the opportunity to conference together. Disenfranchisement contributes to lopsided vote totals."
      In short, disenfranchised delegates who opposed regionalization were robbed not only of their own opportunity to vote, but also robbed of their opportunity to make their appeal and try to persuade their fellow delegates to vote against regionalization.
      It's also possible that the African delegates who did vote for regionalization couldn't pay the cost of giving up the UMC brand in Africa, so they voted for regionalization as a way of protecting themselves against US UMC liberalization and apostasy.
      Don't think for a second that Africa UMC is friendly and amenable to US UMC causes and priorities. They are not.

    This is a colossal waste of time. The UMC is lost. The GMC is in critical condition regardless of the hype. Seminaries would be better off connecting directly to local churches for clergy recommendations and eliminate the emerging ineffective GMC altogether. While elites fight over who is going to be bishop in GMC a seminary can build direct relationships with local churches.

      In the GMC, local churches ARE going to hire their own clergy. Bishops will NOT have the power of clergy appointment, and their candidacy WILL NOT be controlled by small, appointed committees like in the UMC. So yes, in the GMC seminaries CAN communicate directly with local churches, and bishops will NOT be determined by elites. It seems premature to say that a denomination is ineffective prior to its convening conference. All of the premises on which your arguments are based are either incorrect or yet to be established. You seem to be simply trolling, which may be normal in social media but seems weird in a church discussion.

    • @thomasfarrow7053
      @thomasfarrow7053 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@dalethomas5392 I didn't say polyamory and orgies. Polygyny and polyandry are cultural practices and a matter of survival for some families in Africa. Jesus was silent on polygamy and only took a dim view of re-marriage after divorce, yet many UMC pastors and bishops are actually divorced and remarried. Only in the disputed Pauline letters does it state that church leaders should be the "husband of *one wife."* Paul himself was probably asexual.
