    What's scary about Bruce is that he looks less like a pissed off and abnormally large great white but more like a subadult Megaldon or Otodus. Just a huge hunting machine from a bygone time.

      Joe Alves hit gold when he thought that sharks get grittier when they get bigger, which was exactly the sort of feel Bruce gave to us. It's actually better that it doesn't look too real, sharks are not that scary looking animals in the wild afterall, so it just adds to the movie magic that Bruce looked more like a some kind of unnatural monster.

    This is arguably the best and most iconic mechanical creature ever used in film. None of the subsequent sharks looked as good. I completely agree w all you said. Bruce is iconic. The rest of the sharks looked like clowns to me. Bruce looks intimidating. The Jaws 2 shark is AWFUL. if I was the director I would have sent it back. Nope!! Do it again. The face and mouth look terrible.

    • @e.l.norton

      @@roquefortfiles The surprising part is that the same team worked on both sharks. Bob Mattey and Alves helmed both Bruces. They even used the same body molds and frames. But, someone came up with a new mechanical head design that eliminated the distinctive jowl and consequently changed the entire shape of the head. The head itself was also resculpted, as well. I think the upper head looks fine. But, man...that mouth mechanism and underbite make the head pancake when closed, which head-on makes the shark look like an old lady without her dentures in. Just awful.

    • @roquefortfiles
      @roquefortfiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@e.l.norton An old lady without her dentures!! ROFL!! Perfect. I work in the industry and I am a HUGE fan of what they did with Bruce. Just the entire effort. Personally I like Bruce's trademark "Jowls" If you go and look at a white shark they actually have this at the corners of their mouth. (They do!) When they took this away for Jaws 2 the mouth wound up looking "Awkward" . Then with the Jaws 2 shark they sculpted the bottom jaw a foot longer than the top jaw. It looks like Bevis. Not to mention the gum area and teeth had absolutely no detail what so ever. If you go and look at the shark in behind the scenes shots it looks AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!. The teeth are horrible. The paint job is horrible. The sculpting of the head is horrible. From the gills back it looks fine. But its head is FUCKING AWFUL!!!!. Bruce looks clean, accurate, menacing. The Jaws 2 shark looks like a clown. Ive hated it from the day i saw it.

      @@e.l.norton From what I've read. I think they spent all of their time thinking the audience cared if the shark could actually perform a 180 degree turn. They put all of their efforts into improving the shark platform. Bob Mattey was quite happy that his shark could now perform a "Turn". I am just astounded that they thought the shark looked "Good". I can distinctly remember going to my corner store in 77 to see a new magazine on the film and a few candid shots of the shark. When I firs saw "Bruce" i said..."Oh wow!! the shark looks cool. (Time magazine 75) When i saw the Jaws 2 shark i said..."This looks terrible". I thought the shark looked like a joke.

    As much a people love to talk about how “Fake” Bruce looks, remember what an incredible achievement that shark was for 1975. The fact that it didn’t work 100% was a blessing in disguise. JAWS is my all time favorite movie. It can be the middle of a Pennsylvania winter and if I watch JAWS I can smell the ocean, smell the Hawaiian Tropic Lotion, feel the sea breeze on my face. Spielberg didn’t just make movies, he created a world that you were transported into. Still a fantastic movie. It’s aged well, I think 🤔. Don’t remake or reboot it. Leave perfection alone. Movies back then were fun & a Communal experience. I remember every scream & jump in that audience 45 years later. I remember the audience bursting into cheers & applause when Bruce was blown up. I remember in 78 when JAWS 2 came out the excitement. I also remember how much fun the First two Superman movies were in the theaters. People cheering and clapping when he saved Lois from falling and when he ripped open his shirt and showed the S under it. Movies were Magical back then.

    Imagine what animatronic we could achieve today. Bruce is downright frightening even attached to the gurney rig. That tail movement sent shivers. There is an inherent fear of this animal as it is a living creature alive today , not a made up monster. The other sharks at Martas Vinyard while filming this must have been scared out by Bruce and all the racket he made . We now know that are to be a hot spot for White Sharks with a possible breeding ground nearby in Montauk.

    Now, that is one big immensely terrifying shark, just to be fake. Honestly, the fact that sharks irl almost never bother us humans, some of those truly real ones just don’t even look remotely scary, I’ve seen what these creatures look like irl, and I can just only imagine the intensity for someone to just be barricaded in these murky shadowy deep body of waters, just to end up encountering such a thing, like this animatronic depiction of Bruce, it doesn’t even need to slowly, or fast enough to approach us just to be scary enough. It already has a beyond unsettling feeling of pure terror right then and there, just with its appearance no matter the acquaintances, just the sheer look on its face, is simply nothing short of emotionless sentiment, alongside its staring glare. As I say, the robotic shark looks so much more monstrous, than some of these real ones could ever be. So, to make matters worse, even when having the right gear on underwater, it is best to stay the hell away from this thing as much as possible, it’s like a satanic formation work of art that thing is, day or night that thing is pure terror to the maximum no matter what. And, just hearing that eerily haunting silent music in the background, with just about a blurred vision of the underwater test tank involving the shark. So, creepy and scary all at once.

    I never thought the shark looked “fake” per say. It looked like a great white but...not (in all the best ways), allow me to explain. There’s something about realistic replicas that just doesn’t sit well with the human mind. For example, when a person sees robots that are meant to look like a real human, the person is likely to be extremely creeped out. This is because our brains are able to recognize there is something not quite right about what we’re looking at. It could be the empty eyes, the emotionless expressions, or all the above. This unknown factor causes our brain to try and identify what exactly it is which in turn requires us to look at what’s creeping us out even more, creating more fear. That’s why even if Jaws doesn’t look 100% “real”, our brains feel fear. We compare our mental image of a great white to Jaws. One is simply an animal, and the other seems like a replica of that animal made by the Devil. It just isn’t right.

    • @peterjensen6844
      @peterjensen6844 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its known as The "Uncanny Valley"...when things get very close but not quite exactly "real", our brains get really unsettled about it. Its likely a carry over psychological response to seeing diseased or mentally unstable animals etc in early humans and learning its bad to be around them. Its the same reason why when someone seems "off" or not quite mentally stable, it perks up our senses even if we can't say exactly why.

    I love how Bruce is a actual character that has his own unique look & identity compared to other great white sharks ❤️ he honestly doesn't look animatronic to me , he just looks like his own one of a kind subspecies of GWS & ive seen millions of GWS footage & they all move they're mouth like that like chomp chomp chomp!!!! This is a perfect thing to make a animatronic because these types of sharks are very easy to make seem very realistic without much effort especially they're movement, other than the way they move they're tail , u really don't don't have to do much , these things actually act like this in real life👍
