I love these. They are one of the classiest convertibles ever made. Drove a few back in the day when they were nearly new (the last ones made before the CLK arrived) and they felt amazing.
My W124 coupe is great. My daily driver and as its reliable enough I don't have to worry about it. Rust - as ever - is a concern but look after them and they'll look after you. I've found them easy enough to work on as well. Just beware of the eco-wiring Mercedes started using which biodegrade over time and can cause electrical gremlins!
@Not A Proper Classic .. +1 .. Agreed. Our 1994 C124 E320 coupe is contemporary enough, with ABS, Airbags, Auto HVAC, etc., and yet having old sckol Mercedes build quality "like ya read about". R.I.P. uncle ordered the coupe new .. in our care for a decade or so.. Cheers, Vail, Colorado 702 Smoke Silver with 265 Creme Beige Leathers ...
If Mercedes reintroduced the W124 with modern rustproofing, I’d buy one in a heartbeat. I’d love a 300TD wagon. That OM606 that is soooo tunable! Combine that with comfort and timeless styling.
Modern rustproofing these have lasted 4 times longer than most other cars with whatever rustproofing they came with especially longer than newer mercedes
Is very cool to see old fashion video shoots. Non glitches and no perpetual gimbal-movments I like that shoot of the interior. I'm a big fan of 124s Greetings from Uruguay
Styling means a lot to me and Mercedes, often, simply doesn't cut it. Too slab-sided, too heavy looking, too conservative. But if I had to choose one, I'd take a 124 pillarless coupe. A friend of mine had an E300CE(?) and it simply oozed class...
When most cars were built to last and didn't rely on technology to keep the car on the road, today we have cars full of Chinese technology monitoring who knows what and where we go. Great car review on a great car, thanks for this one Joe.
Thank you for creating this. Beautiful cars. I had a Bornite A124 with cream leather and Mag Wheels. A wonderful car. Not sure I'd say I regret selling it as an R129 is just that bit more special.
I bought a used one back in the late 90's and sold it about 10 years later. I really loved that car and I'm thinking of getting a well preserved diesel this time around, but to keep until I get old(er). :)
@Tony Lee .. +1. .. Agreed, not spirited quick. .. Our '94 E320 C124 Coupe w/4sp (slushbox) once started in 1st gear will "get off the cams" nicely. The 3.6l version of the same M106 screams & howls once past 4K RPM.. Gotta luv the ole W124 Mercs with inline 6cly w/twin cams.
When these first came out I thought wow what a great well engineered car, but could not afford one. Fast forward to today I can now afford a new Mercedes BUT would not buy one. Mercedes today are not a well engineered car. They use cheap parts, are overcomplicated and suffer from poor reliability. The luxury brand today is Lexus. Lexus are not perfect but are the nearest you can get to engineering perfection in a car.
@Bond, James Bond.. +1.. Agreed. .. Mercedes truly stumbled for decades after Toyota's mid-1990s Lexus debut, which rightfully stole the luxury segment. .. Especially in terms of quality and value for money.
I daily my old w124 300CE. no ECU's no bullshit it just keeps cruising. I still have my w220 and w210s but electronics are beginning to become a headache on them, especially the w220 :(
@@drainaudio true I know, but it's quite basic though, lots of analogue comparator circuits. Nothing compared to the likes of the systems that replaced the K jets!
@@RADS190 - ECU's are ECU's.. 🤣 Thankfully in the W124 era they were built very robustly, so that they can still work perfectly in 2023. I don't think there's too many fans of the K jet & I personally think the M104 2.8 (with programmed 1st gear start) is the best of the engines if you want to use a W124 as a modern daily. That said it's all about maintenance - plenty of K jet cars out there running perfectly I'm sure in the right hands i.e. not numpties who blame a historically neglected MB for their problems.. 😔
I just bought a same looking car 3 weeks ago, so happy. The inner lining is a little caved in and has a patch from its previous owner. That might be an expensive replacement? I like what you have on the steering wheel. did you make it?
Had a wonderful ‘94 coupe. Retired and moved to a home with only a 3 car garage so I sold it for $1,600. Now I’m looking to get a similar car and it’s going to cost me 10X. Big mistake to sell it. I’m in US of course.
It's just a shame Mercedes doesn't make cars like the W124 anymore.
And they never will.
I love these. They are one of the classiest convertibles ever made. Drove a few back in the day when they were nearly new (the last ones made before the CLK arrived) and they felt amazing.
Growing up a neighbour had a E300 with a manual gearbox, it was bomb proof

One of the Last of the Real Mercedes Quality Vehicles, The Plastic Bling Garbage they produce now is shameful in comparison.
Not a car I would ever think of, but now I want one. Great video.
Thanks Mark, glad we've brought you around 😁

Mines being welded and the moment £4500.

Don't worry about that. With the low quality of the junk they make that stuff will fail quickly enough. 😂😅😂😅
The later W124s in Australia at least did have a few issues. Mostly to do with the stupid biodegradable wiring loom.
Thank you for creating this. Beautiful cars. I had a Bornite A124 with cream leather and Mag Wheels. A wonderful car. Not sure I'd say I regret selling it as an R129 is just that bit more special.
Perfect proportions and a wonderful ownership proposition
Great video Joe. I hope you pumped up that tyre before the test drive 😁
I did!

I have one , white with black top and black interior. I concur with the review. It's a great car to have, and I enjoy driving it.
I had a 3 litre coupe. Not the fastest car but I always felt very special when I drove it. Loved the seat belt butlers.
It should be fast

What a brilliant car! I have an e320 cab and absolutely love it, wouldn’t part with for the world!
TIMELESS CLASSIC
W124 driving mannerisms with the M104 straight six is pretty impressive. Much more than the W123.

Notice the camera shaking once the roof was down though.
Front left tyre looks a bit flat in some of the stills, no?
There will always be the argument for the ages W123 vs W124 😂 with no winner in sight.
Arguably two of the greatest automobile classes ever made.
Another good video 🚘🚙🚗👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of the most beautiful convertible ever made

Great. Greater with a 6 cylinder.
Last of the over engineered Mercs. All went downhill after the W124
The German's golden era, bombproof reliability works of art. Audi, BMW and Mercedes... what happened eh?
I agree.

From 1990-1992, look the best, sound better and have better quality..
Ohh--Lancaster insures more than just the old magnificent bombers...🙂
Sadly we suspect they don't cover planes...
@@ClassicsWorldUKBut a big thank you for developing that great Merlin engine that was then fitted to our P-51 Mustangs.
just get the diesel one ,much less hassle than the petrol ones

Benz lost their way after this car with the successor w210
The w124 is a much better car than the w123. I’ve had 3 of both.
The champion of rust.
The body sadly can crumble around the bombproof mechanicals...
nice example coupes and cabrios are getting expensive in Germany and EU. 20k € and more
Behave these things fell to bits like a Franco Italiano conglomerate
Best Merc my arse 🤣
@Chief Rocka ... Oh nonsense. .. The W124 series world over has a stellar reliability reputation.
lovely but gotta be a 6 pot for me
The modern E Class is heap of junk by comparison.
Agreed!
