Of course originally they were designed to help the workers on the ships stay in time with each other during rhythmically driven tasks.. like hauling heavy ropes etc.. and now we are united in the task of getting through this Covid 19 time and various lockdowns ... singing shanties lifts the spirits for sure.

Brings back good memories of sailing with my Papa. He would sing sea shanties while we were out on the water. He not only taught me how to sail, but how to harmonize too! Rest in peace, Papa.
My family has a history of fishing in pugit sound, Alaska, the Caribbean and some of the most dangerous places my grandpa built a boat called the V.I.S. my aunt used to run a seafood restaurant called V.I.S. Seafoods using only the seafood my mom my aunt my grandpa and my aunt who’s running the business caught my dad sold the V.I.S. over a year a ago and I am still sad to this day so this song almost made me cry and it made me so emotional thank you so much for it.

I am not sure „The Wellerman“ qualifies as a genuine „work song“, which I believe shanties were originally. Someone even called it „shanty-adjacent“. But all music theory gibberish aside - it is still a gorgeous tune that anyone can pick up and there are SO many good renditions of it on TH-cam that I find enjoyable. It is simple, it is fun and that is good enough for me.

This is just unbelievable it is amazing I really loved and enjoyed every single part of it the: song itself, the lyrics, and the PIANOOOO part ofcourse.
