How to dissect a tricky GAMSAT S3 Physics question!

  • Follow me as I solve a tricky GAMSAT physic question. What makes it difficult is that it requires an understanding of several topics in physics including projectile motion, Newton's 2nd law and springs. But what is probably the trickiest aspect is interpreting the graph!

    Hi, can you explain what is happening in the last section of the graph? Thanks for the video!

      The last "section" of the graph represents when the ball lands back onto the spring. Initially, it's falling at a certain speed which is why the velocity is negative (plot is below the horizontal axis). As it continues to fall it is "pushing" or compressing the spring down. The spring resists this and slows down the ball so it is "falling" slower, represented by the velocity becoming less negative (plot is getting closer to the horizontal axis). Eventually, the ball compresses the spring back to its initial position and it stops (plot reaches the horizontal axis i.e. velocity is zero). Hope this helps :)
