I was thinking of getting a new projector at some point as I have had a 1080P one for over 10 years but as I live on my own I'm now thinking of going for a pair of smart glasses when they are perfected
The 120Hz in / 60 Hz out is just part of the 3D. Since 3D is technically two streams being inputted simultaneously at 60 Hz a piece and then overlayed... it pretty much equals 60 Hz (left) + 60 Hz (right) / 60 Hz (combined).

Wow. The specs on the Aurora Pro 4K are awesome but, as you say, I like the real-case examples as well.| Also, good call on the screen reflections on a TV being more obtrusive than bright wash. In addition to home entertainment use, I can see using something like this in a conference or class room where you don't want to devote a whole section of the room to A/V all the time. The size of the screen makes it reasonable to use in a space where even a large TV would just look puny. Great review as usual. I appreciate the detail you go into when talking about the pros and cons as well as the honesty when you talk about things that may be a matter of taste or opinion.
The light hitting the screen thing is mainly to do with the projector screen you use. There's different materials that reflect the light differently. I recently watched a video of a guy comparing them all. The best ones will cost a few grand especially for the ones which raise up like the one you have... ahhhh... look, as I type you get onto this lol

Great video, keep up the good work! I really enjoyed this and the fact that finally SOMEONE points out that TV Glare is a major DEAL BREAKER on Flat Panel TVs because you can just as easily mitigate image fade on a projector as you can TV Glare so why not just go with the projector instead????
I’ll keep my C2….I enjoy OLED and HDR too much. And if I was buying something, it would be a QD-OLED, not a projector. I got nothing against projectors, but they don’t have the same PQ as a self emissive display. Bigger isn’t always better in my eyes either. I get its more “immersive”, but there’s issues that arise when blowing something up so large. My eyes go to every imperfection much faster on large displays. I personally like a higher ppi. I’m all about clarity, and not seeing artifacts. I bet you had sharpness and/or AI enabled on the TV too…also, you didn’t explain if it was displaying a native signal, being upscaled, etc. Apples to apples comparisons and transparency is important when claiming something is “so much better”.
bigger, or bigger "for the price" is the only reason to get anything other than an OLED, but it's a damn good reason. I always try to convince people to get an OLED if they can afford it, but if they mention that they want a bigger screen for the same price, (or less in a lot of situations) then I'll stop trying to convince them. As far as "big screens go" there's already somewhat affordable 98" televisions out there, which is wild (4k for an LCD... about 5x more for the OLED counterpart) For projectors, these UST laser ones seems to be the way to go if you want a really large screen. But if you want contrast that gets meaningfully close to an OLED, there's only one game in town: LCoS from JVC.
hi paul, i am just happy with the xdmi you had in one of your other videos. where can i find this bottom to top screen thing that you are showing? wouldn't that work with any projector as well?
Intro had me interested but then when it was a sponsor I couldn’t see past it and take everything with a pinch of salt. I’ll wait for a few more reviews until making my final call on it, sounds good though!
I really want to know how much the brightness will decrease when this projector projects at 100 inches and 120 inches because I bought a 120-inch ALR screen from Vivid Storm.
6:20 technically you can have a 150" tv samsung made "the wall" but practically no one has enough money for this, especially that it would draw an absurd amount of power and you'll need a separate cooling system just for this room for you not to boil in there after an hour.
When I was a kid, my parents thought a transformer was that thing that plugs into the wall to charge things....... On a serious note though, this projector looks rather interesting. Look forward to seeing it (maybe) become available in Australia...... Rainbow effect usually only effects DLP projectors as far as I recall. I notice it on DLP projectors, but not on other technologies. Guess your mileage may vary.
You are correct regarding the "rainbow effect" on DLP. It occurs because a DLP projector throws up a red image, then a green image, then a blue image, then repeats. This is because a typical DLP projector is monochromatic, and to get color they use a color wheel for each of the colors. This time shifted RGB is why you moving can cause the color issues. (Try watching through a fan sometime.)
Paul, didn't you do a video on the screen that goes up and down that's 100 inches? I can't find it and wanted to get more information about it. As I really like that it goes down down and doesn't stay on a wall. Thank you for always making me laugh!!
Yeah he did. Try searching his name and ALR... And if it wasnt him search for the hookup alr... 1 or both reviewed ALR screens. If both, watch both - worth your time.
Projectors do need a dark room. ALR screens help, but they are not a panacea, not even close. Bigger is NOT always better, picture quality is more important then a ultra large screen.
Two questions please 1. How big of a screen can I use with this? in your video you mention 150 inch screen, is that the recommended size? Which specific screen can you recommend for a first time buyer like myself? 2. How far away does the projector need to sit from the screen? I’m trying to figure out how exactly it would fit in my room. Thank you, I am, of course, subscribed with notifications, enabled, and thumbs up!
You pay more for UST than a regular throw projector for the same quality, plus you need an ALR screen, and the distance from the screen means you lose 3' of floor space in front of the screen -- although I assume this could be ceiling mounted to avoid losing the floor space even if your review didn't mention that. A 150" image is 11' wide, which would have most people sitting at least 11' away, so a room a minimum 12' deep. That is enough depth for a Benq X3000i if it faces a mirror on the rear wall from 16" away, and that mirror gives you a good place to mask top and bottom black bars. The only use case I see for UST is to avoid people walking between projector and screen, ie. standup gaming like tennis or golf.
A UST is brighter because there is less distance for the light to travel, it is also more convenient to install as you don’t have to find a beam in your ceiling to drill it to. The sound also comes from the front of the room instead of above your head and can be more easily wired to a sound system without having to run cables through your ceiling. Trust me when I say that pulling your upstairs floorboards up to run a super long hdmi cable from your sound system up your wall and across half your house is not fun and does not impress the wife. It can NOT be hung from the ceiling, not that I would want to attempt to do so! The assumption when making the video was that a person looking to buy a 100” display will have the 2 and a bit feet of floor space. It’s still more convenient than the TV’s permanent wall hogging or worse, window hogging.
@@paulhibbertcompletely agree. I am lucky enough to have a dedicated home theatre room and I ran cables through the floors and ceiling for my 7.4.2 but still went UST over a standard projector. Mainly because I didn’t want to mount a 25kg JVC 4k monolith from my ceiling. I have an LG HU8LS that is bright enough for us to watch sports, play games and watch stuff with the kids without having to close the blinds. And I haven’t blighted the ceiling so the room still looks / works as a conventional room. I might go for a standard projector at some point if we commit to staying at this house forever but, for my first projector, a UST was ideal. Edit: I have to admit, accommodating a centre speaker and a UST was a pain and, IMO, the biggest compromise over a standard projector in my case. I managed it with a dedicated stand but it’s not ideal.
I like the look of this… just wish I could run down to Costco and grab one… the screen wash wouldn’t be an issue because when I tell Siri it’s movie time he closes the blinds, dims the lights and turns on the tv backlighting… I guess I’d have to teach him to lower/raise the projection screen too…. And I have to say, the lizard at 5:21 has her lipstick done very nicely….
The screen wash is an issue even in a completely dark room, unless you paint your walls black and wear black shirts too. The light is reflected off the screen, bounces off the walls and lights up the screen again. Yes, it's not as bad as during daytime, but it is there.
@@Buzza235It's a general issue with projectors, thus no, I don't buy one. If size at an affordable priceis all that matters, yeah, projectors are a decent option. But for optimal image quality, you need something else. Unless you have a ton of money to _build_ a dedicated theater and are willing to equip it with high end equipment. And even then, if I had that sort of money (a few 100k), I'd probably be looking at microLED these days.
Well unashamed sponsorship success story here. I haven’t heard of this projector but impulse bought it while finishing your video up. Here’s why, the company is established with a few products out there already. I am concerned with quality but that’s the risk you take at the lower price point. I was going to pull the trigger on a high end laser projector already to replace my UST LG PF1000W. The LG is a good projector but it really doesn’t pop that much, is 1080, and even with my Elite Screens ALR, its still lacking. I’m hoping this gives me a few years of use and hopefully the longevity of it is worth the risk. Thanks Paul for the review!
You shouldn’t get the Rainbow effect with a laser projector, although a laser projector uses a DLP chip, it either has three individual coloured lasers, or two laser and a prism to split the colours, as a result it does not need the spinning colour wheel of a traditional DLP projector. I struggle to watch a Normal DLP projector as the rainbow effect makes me feel sick.
I personally only watch streaming services, I imagine the vast majority of people will plug in a sky box or similar, the same as most people do with their tv 🤷🏻♂️
Yep thinking the same thing. £2999 on amazon. If this was £1400 i'd buy it instantly. Looking for a projector in that price range. Probably going to go with the Viewsonic LX700-4k which looks very similar in tests I've seen for £1199.
Correct me if I'm wrong though Paul .. but don't you still have that 3 grand fancy light rejecting projector screen ?? If you were going to compare anything with your TV , couldn't you have just used your old projector screen to make it more applicable for the rest of us ? The majority of us won't have a fancy screen like you do seeing as you had it free. Right now your comparing a 2 grand projector paired with a 3 grand screen against a 1000-1500 TV
a) Distance between back of device and screen: 100" 7.8 inch / 120" 11.52 inch / 150" 17.28" b) Distance from front of unit to screen: 100" 23.84 inches / 120" 27.56 inches / 150" 33.32
Hi Paul, hope things are good. Can i ask you something please? just wondering what this projector would look like projecting onto a sheet of glass? and whether that woudl work. Have a good one bro, all the best, Kieron
Who have the patience to wait till spring/summer of next year. 2024 is going to be an busy sport year for sure, with the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, and UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany. Thanks to those games, it's going to be a year of discounts on TV's and UST projectors in Europe.
dunno Paul, just seems the same as all of your other projector videos. every one is the newest best thing. but is it? how about doing a 2023 round up? not only on projectors. how about smart bulbs , switches, sensors . cameras? all the products you review seem to be great... but which is the best?
UST is definitely an improvement for many reasons. But the cost to performance just can't compete with LG or Samsung OLED. The only thing going for a projector is screen size. There are no other reasons to run a projector. TV's can be hung or hidden also in more ways than a projector + screen. The cost is an even larger difference if buying used/refurbished/open box OLED. Then, even if someone already has an ALR, an OLED is still way more cost effective to performance. Ivw been living with LG OLED for years now and no one could pay me to switch into UST viewing..
@paulhibbert nope, doesn't matter. As you said, no one is running a screen glare in the first place... There's no reason to go UST but size, and that's a really low-end reason... Who cares about 100" when a OLED is multiple times better picture.
Ah Ok. Depends on use case really, the horizon ultra is what they call a lifestyle projector and most of your money is going into making it easily luggable, though the picture is incredible! It’s also been designed to work well on walls, even if they have a bit of colour. You can get it out and use it and put it away when done. The Nexigo is for creating a proper home cinema with a permanent setup, obviously more difficult if you have kids with sticky fingers, or a wife that just won’t put up with it! It has a better speaker and a better picture, but you’ll need a good screen for it, and preferably an ALR screen specifically designed for ultra short throw projectors to really get the best out of it. Its picture will beat the ultra regardless of the screen though for contrast ratio and brightness. Over all though I think the ultra produces more natural colours (in my opinion), my favourite Ultra short throw is still the XGIMI one I reviewed a while back, though I think it’s more expensive than the Nexigo
@@paulhibbertthanks Paul, appreciate your response. Neither of the other two you mentioned have Dolby Vision though do they? Are you referring to the XGMI Aura?
Pretty much every single DLP projector cannot do 4k/120hz. It's a limitation of the chip. Only 3 chip projectors can do that. And so far that's just Epson and JVC.
I like the UST projectors but for the life of me cannot fathom why anybody would want an enormous rectangular box sitting on their living room floor. It would be ok in a dedicated home theatre I guess.
My plan is to put it in a cabinet. You can get cabinets designed to hold the screen and the projector, that way it’s not much different to having a tv cabinet. They’re a bit bigger though obviously!
I think it's the other way about rather than having a huge box hanging from the ceiling all the time, you can just pull this out of a cupboard, stick in on a small table just when you want to use it. Very fast setup
Really good point about the tv reflection and having to close the curtains anyway. Looks solid. Wish I had the money. Maybe if they’d thrown in a “Caravanus Whine gobot” and I would have gone all in 😂 Btw… the Samsung short throw is NOT a gaming projector hence why they don’t market it as such. The delay on that is around 50ms
I want a 4k projector, but I already have 3 Panasonic 1080p laser projectors, and an Epson UB 1080p lamp based projector, so I'm good for a few years, even though I watch video, and game about 12+ hours per day, lol 😂
The projector does look great but i'm not sure we could accommodate such a large screen in our relatively small living room. It's also worth noting that not all traditional TV's suffer from screen glare. We picked up a couple of 68" Samsung QLEDs last year and neither of them exhibit the issue, which was particularly useful as the sunlight is routinely streaming in through the bay window at the front of our house. A projector such as this looks like it could be an ideal option for when we finally get round to converting the garage into a home office/cinema space.

I always try to convince people to get an OLED if they can afford it, but if they mention that they want a bigger screen for the same price, (or less in a lot of situations) then I'll stop trying to convince them.
As far as "big screens go" there's already somewhat affordable 98" televisions out there, which is wild (4k for an LCD... about 5x more for the OLED counterpart)
For projectors, these UST laser ones seems to be the way to go if you want a really large screen. But if you want contrast that gets meaningfully close to an OLED, there's only one game in town: LCoS from JVC.
Have you ever got those Bose cubes that in the directions says may sound better if reflected off the wall? They do.
hi paul, i am just happy with the xdmi you had in one of your other videos. where can i find this bottom to top screen thing that you are showing? wouldn't that work with any projector as well?
Interesting! Thanks mate, I shall have to look into that!
You can get laser speckle from 3 laser projectors though
Great review! Where do you place an “ultra short throw” projector? How short is ultra-short?
Happy Saturday Paul. Thank you.
Cheers Paul I bought the Xgimi not long ago so I will stick with that.
Does it have WiFi and Bluetooth for connectivity?
How did you get it delivered cause if i click the Amazon link for uk it says it cant be delivered to my location
Is this a projector and screen all in one unit, or a separate setup? Thanks
Which screen is it you have there?
So how much to buy one? Can't remember you giving a purchase amount?
Is this kit all still at Mr R's? In the interests of a visit and test in one
It’s not mate sorry!
@@paulhibbert that's ok. Just polishing my cheeky b*@#£r creds.
Look up Vividstorm, that's what these are.
Projectors do need a dark room. ALR screens help, but they are not a panacea, not even close. Bigger is NOT always better, picture quality is more important then a ultra large screen.
Nice video. I was pretty much set on the Formovie Theater UST but after seeing this no longer sure. Have you seen the Formovie Theater?
You didn't show how much space it takes up . Like can I put it on an entertainment stand or is it like 40" deep??
Two questions please
I love the funny parts of this video .. the grandma kicking the baby 😂😂
Looking forward when ALDP 5.0 is released in new Projectors
Ignore the scammer! ❤️
The screen wash is an issue even in a completely dark room, unless you paint your walls black and wear black shirts too. The light is reflected off the screen, bounces off the walls and lights up the screen again. Yes, it's not as bad as during daytime, but it is there.
@@kadajawi2Did you return it?
@@Buzza235It's a general issue with projectors, thus no, I don't buy one. If size at an affordable priceis all that matters, yeah, projectors are a decent option. But for optimal image quality, you need something else. Unless you have a ton of money to _build_ a dedicated theater and are willing to equip it with high end equipment. And even then, if I had that sort of money (a few 100k), I'd probably be looking at microLED these days.
Any ideas on total cost inc shipping and tax? You had me at 150 inches 😉
6:10 made me feel things I can't explain
It’s a brand new kind of horny right? 😁
@@paulhibbert 💯 especially when Jeff got involved
Love the content as always...cheers from the states
Being a transformer reviewer, I'm cracking up at the fake transformer 😅😅😅 Good video
So.. can you integrate this with HOMEASSISTANT? (yes u can, just use some bridge with IR, like Aqara hub)
I love the fact that you play Destiny. And the fact yer a Titan? Even better.
Amazing ❤️❤️ you should attach something like a MiSTer to it!
I'm always going to have my computer plugged into the projector, along with at least two other monitors streaming everything in 4K. 🙂
Ok so how do you watch live tv??? It has no atsc 3 tuner...
I personally only watch streaming services, I imagine the vast majority of people will plug in a sky box or similar, the same as most people do with their tv 🤷🏻♂️
£2700 on amazon? how is this a 1400 quid projector? genuine qiestion how can i get it for 1400 quid?
Yep thinking the same thing.
£2999 on amazon.
If this was £1400 i'd buy it instantly. Looking for a projector in that price range. Probably going to go with the Viewsonic LX700-4k which looks very similar in tests I've seen for £1199.
Cool video. Does this projector support native 4k or is it pixel shifting? Thanks
It's pixel shifting but you wouldn't notice it.
Does this have pixel shift 4K or true 4K ?
It's pixel shift as is every single DLP projector.
Hi Paul what distance did you have the projector from the screen?
a) Distance between back of device and screen:
100" 7.8 inch / 120" 11.52 inch / 150" 17.28"
b) Distance from front of unit to screen:
100" 23.84 inches / 120" 27.56 inches / 150" 33.32
thank you@@netcoin
Can I use this as PC monitor?
Yes
UST is definitely an improvement for many reasons.
But the cost to performance just can't compete with LG or Samsung OLED. The only thing going for a projector is screen size. There are no other reasons to run a projector.
TV's can be hung or hidden also in more ways than a projector + screen.
The cost is an even larger difference if buying used/refurbished/open box OLED. Then, even if someone already has an ALR, an OLED is still way more cost effective to performance.
Ivw been living with LG OLED for years now and no one could pay me to switch into UST viewing..
Can basically sell the ALR screen and buy a OLED for that money now...
You seem to have ignored the screen glare point and the ability to roll away point, and then downplayed size as if it doesn’t really matter 🤔
@paulhibbert nope, doesn't matter. As you said, no one is running a screen glare in the first place...
There's no reason to go UST but size, and that's a really low-end reason...
Who cares about 100" when a OLED is multiple times better picture.
@paulhibbert I highly suggest you sell the ALR and get a OLED and be done with it.
@paulhibbert a larger screen is worse on picture quality anyway. Maybe 8K will help a large ALR screen.
With an Ambient Light Screen daylight will be even less of a problem.
the screen is twice as important as what your using to project onto it. nice screen indeed
How would you rate this against the new XGMI Horizon Ultra?
This Will Change Your Mind | XGIMI Horizon Ultra Review
th-cam.com/video/a2IeR3IhHkw/w-d-xo.html
@@paulhibbert I saw that very fine review, but would like to know which you'd choose between the two and why?
What state is the American guy from?
What's the throw distance?
At that price, I wouldn't be throwing it anywhere
Looks like it's still a bargain at £2,000 once import duty and shipping are added 👍
I like that ironic currency joke, "Pound is a weight..." which is why it's called a pound, it was the weight of silver in 240 pennies.
Caravanmus Prime looks expensive
They all were 😩
bcos they are
I swore I would stop buying the products you review. I now need to re arrange my front room
Great Video Paul!
Disappointed that it doesn't do 120hz out. I thought finally a short throw that does VRR and allm! But then it doesn't do 120. Ugh.
Pretty much every single DLP projector cannot do 4k/120hz. It's a limitation of the chip. Only 3 chip projectors can do that. And so far that's just Epson and JVC.
Usually don't like cutsey crap. You do it well. I am somewhat entertained (-"
Android 9.0? Seems to be very outdated
Welp, time to sell one of my kidneys for a really dope projector
I like the UST projectors but for the life of me cannot fathom why anybody would want an enormous rectangular box sitting on their living room floor. It would be ok in a dedicated home theatre I guess.
My plan is to put it in a cabinet. You can get cabinets designed to hold the screen and the projector, that way it’s not much different to having a tv cabinet. They’re a bit bigger though obviously!
I think it's the other way about rather than having a huge box hanging from the ceiling all the time, you can just pull this out of a cupboard, stick in on a small table just when you want to use it. Very fast setup
"Proposterously low price"?? Erm... $1,700? Low? Cough cough 🤔😮
😎🇬🇧
Really good point about the tv reflection and having to close the curtains anyway. Looks solid. Wish I had the money. Maybe if they’d thrown in a “Caravanus Whine gobot” and I would have gone all in 😂
Btw… the Samsung short throw is NOT a gaming projector hence why they don’t market it as such. The delay on that is around 50ms
They couldn’t afford that many caravanimus primes! No one can!! 😂
I want a 4k projector, but I already have 3 Panasonic 1080p laser projectors, and an Epson UB 1080p lamp based projector, so I'm good for a few years, even though I watch video, and game about 12+ hours per day, lol 😂
It's a £3000 projector, not a £1400 one ?
The TV glare is not what I kept seeing. I see the glare from the big beautiful bald head! 😂
It is a blinding light that heals the soul 😂
I ditched the Telmudvision a decade ago...🤨
The projector does look great but i'm not sure we could accommodate such a large screen in our relatively small living room.
It's also worth noting that not all traditional TV's suffer from screen glare. We picked up a couple of 68" Samsung QLEDs last year and neither of them exhibit the issue, which was particularly useful as the sunlight is routinely streaming in through the bay window at the front of our house.
A projector such as this looks like it could be an ideal option for when we finally get round to converting the garage into a home office/cinema space.
Ignore the scammer! 🙄 I’ve deleted his comment
I'd love to see this projector up against an OLED.
Pounds are a measure of mass, not weight. And now, back to the show.
I’m sure someone has mentioned this: Triple laser = no color wheel = no rainbow effect. If I’m wrong, I stand corrected.
I managed to solve the size issue when I watch alone: I sit really close to my 55” OLED TV, for the best of both worlds….
Exactly! Had an UST projector, they are OK, but OLED destroys the picture quality in ever spec.
£1700 no way will this look as good as the new oleds like my s95b
