    LOVE IT!! Mom's like yourself who are willing to share on TH-cam have been a blessing to me! I have been homeschooling really since birth of my almost 6-year-old and 3-year-old, and I feel like wisdom gained from Mom's with many homeschooling years have saved me many headaches and money. My oldest recently said, "I love homeschool because I love learning." Thank you for sharing!

    You are my all-time favorite homeschool youtuber! We have 5 kids and have homeschooled since the beginning. We are finishing up our 8th year. Your humility and patience inspire me so much. I had more structure in the beginning, too (using the same Managers book!) How are you going to handle high school science? In our state (NC), certain credits are required (or highly recommended) for college application.

    • @jasonandjulie

      Thank you for your sweet words! ❤️ I haven’t decided yet what we will do for high school. Isabella will just be 13 when the school year starts so I have another year to decide 😜
      She does not plan to attend college, but wants to purchase her own farm instead, so I won’t necessarily have to worry about hi school requirements from a college application perspective for her. Our oldest son does want to attend college though, so we will have to figure out those details before too long

    • @toriridgeway1199
      @toriridgeway1199 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes a lot of sense. My oldest child isnt sure what he wants to do yet. Other than that he wants to be a writer. For which college seems to be a little optional. Even after all these years, I struggle, still, with wanting to do things conventionally and check off the boxes, for future transcripts and for myself. The way you described how the productivity of checking off the boxes felt so good for you as a mom rang so true with me! I feel like I swing from two extremes--focusing too much on checking boxes and on the flip side, becoming way too lax and unmotivated. I know that's something for which I need to pray for wisdom and balance.
      We also school year-round! Reduces regression! And there isn't the pain of having to start up again.

    I know this video is old but I was searching for more homesteading homeschooling videos because they are hard to find. This summer My kids collected tadpoles and we put them in our small fish tank. My kids named them and we have been loving it. They have all been released except for one (itty bitty) and this week we are going to watercolor and write our best memory of the experience. I now understand why this type of learning is so popular. Our homeschool word is delight and I have really been praying over what is most important to spend energy on when it comes to seat work. It’s so easy to fill up the day but so much of it is repetitive and if you just take a step back and see how much can be learned in life it really is so special. Thank you for sharing this.

      I loved reading this! When I first heard about interest led learning I thought “but what about ALL THE THINGS my kids should be taught?!” What I didn’t realize then is that all the things aren’t important… if my kids know how to learn and enjoy it, they can figure out whatever things they need to know when they need to know them!!
      Enjoy your learning time! It sounds like you are doing a wonderful job leading your kids

    We love this style of learning. All I ask of my son is that we work on our unit study each day and complete a lesson in math. The rest of the day is his do learn and do whatever interests him.

    Love it! We’re finishing up our 4th year of homeschooling. My oldest is 3rd grade and then we have a 1st grader, preschooler and an almost 2 year old. We use a lot of curriculum from The Good and The Beautiful. I think sometimes being okay with not being at “grade level” or “normal” on certain things can be hard but when you see the fruit of your kids learning and enjoying a subject they previously didn’t like it makes it so much more exciting. :-) Love all the videos and am excited for the month of May. Hope we can still get a garden update and stuff in too! Lol 😂 We got the watercolor pencils today! So fun!

    You inspire me as a homeschooling mama!! I too changed A LOT actually over the years. I love year round, it’s the best change I’ve made.i used to be so ready for summer break and now I feel like I don’t even need it! Having the daily reprieve was essential for this mama of 9 going on 10! I love what you said about your kids retaining more by making their own choices of interest. I’m afraid I’m too scared to jump into it even though I greatly agree!😒. Loved your part 1 video as well such a beautiful example of the love that goes into homeschooling 💗💗💗

    I love your idea of one family subject per day! I've seen the same thing with just doing snippets here and there, it feels like we're just checking off the boxes and no one remembers anything. I really like to be able to dive deeper into subjects. We do a combination of delight directed learning and unit studies. Usually the unit studies are something that one of my two girls wants to go deeper into. You're so right about how each child learns differently and how a child's learning changes over the years!! there's so many factors that changed the dynamic of homeschool! We got to have quite a few years of living across the street from my parents and helping them so that was part of our days then after my dad passed away, my mama lived with us for her last few years. Of course, the addition of each new child, Dad's work schedule, house moves, it all affects our homeschool days! You're so right that one of the beautiful parts of homeschooling is the flexibility and being able to accommodate all of these things. I cannot tell you how many times we changed our homeschool approach, curriculum choices, and daily schedule in our 17 years of homeschooling. that used to bother me. I thought I was just being fickle but then I thought about the reasons why I have changed things up so much and we have just had so many life changes that we have needed to. Sure, sometimes it's my own inconsistencies but I love being able to change things when they're not working! Great video! Thank you!

    Thank you for sharing! I feel that as my kids grow I am going to do more child-led//delight learning with them. Right now, I do a lot of reading to them and I feel I am showing them what is out there in our world. If they ask about something we dig into it. But, they don't have much interest outside playing. So we "school" for 3 hrs. 4 days a week and we play a lot even in those 3 hours. The more I homeschool the more relaxed I become (even while using some CM methods, some classical methods, and some un-schooling principles). And maybe I do too much...I don't know. What I do know is that my children are happy, they are creative, they love what we do (by their own words), and if something doesn't work I am happy to change it. Parenthood has taught me 2 BIG things, I am not as patient as I thought I was and to be flexible.

    I love how you describe it as delight directed schooling. This is what we do, and it never quite fit under the category of unschooling. We came to this after my second child struggled so hard with reading and writing. A few months ago we learned that he most likely has dyslexia and adhd. Now we're going more off of play based and letting him run wild with his love of science and nature, and as with everything else, in his time, he's starting to pick up on things that were difficult for him before. I find that as a Missouri homeschool mom, my biggest struggle is figuring out what category to fit everything in and remembering to log those hours everyday to get enough for the year. Do you have trouble with this or have a good method to keep up with logging?

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the same problem. Haha. I try to keep the logbook out and easily accessible but I still forget to write things down and end up trying to remember things we did 🤪

    So what advice do you give with this approach when you think about city life? Small backyard with nothing to do? I know that sounds negative but that’s how I feel sometimes.

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand. We used to live in St Louis with just a city backyard. We did put in a small garden just for fun and to let the kids dig in dirt. But I did feel like they knew every inch of that yard. I found places around our area where I could take the kids and let them play in the creek or explore some woods without being on someone’s personal property 😆 Also, within our house we made sure that there were places they could be creative and make messes.

      I wonder about that also. In my state, we have to do testing or evaluations every year. I have to have something to show for evaluations. How does that work for an evaluation?

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We do not have to do testing or evaluations here in Missouri. I’m thankful for that! However, I do keep records for our kids. I have a file for each child that I put things in they do throughout the year. Basically if it’s something they write down on paper I save it in the file. Their math is all recorded by Teaching Textbooks so I don’t have to worry about that. We also have to keep a logbook even though they typically do not ever check it. I show our current log book here: th-cam.com/video/hYEKMMDNKho/w-d-xo.html

    This is fantastic. I'm pretty new in my homeschool journey. I have four kids and my oldest is in 1st grade. I will start 'formally' homeschooling my second this coming fall. I'm curious, do you have any books that you have read about delight directed learning? I tend to gravitate towards this concept, but I struggle as I also feel like its a way for me to 'escape' the challenges that come with formal homeschooling. I don't want to make a decision that is based in lack of perseverance. I know my own struggles and just want to be careful that I'm making the best choice, not one out of convenience. Though, I have to say, I think it would almost require more intentionality.

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not read any books on delight directed learning before I begin, although I did quite a bit of random Internet searches, reading blogs of other moms who followed that approach to homeschooling. I’m currently reading Wild and Free by Ainsley Arment and it has been a wonderful. I recommend it for any mom who is interested in the delight directed approach. It doesn’t specifically use that terminology, but it is supporting the concept of a learning lifestyle.

      I would just keep going. It can take several years to settle in to a homeschooling routine that you enjoy. Try to figure out what your kids like the most and do more of those things. Your kids are so little, they don’t really understand the full impact of what they are saying when they ask to go to school. You are the mom, you do what is best for your family

    Hi Julie! Thanks for sharing as always! I love the delight approach... I will need to look into it more as we do a similar thing called child lead learning over here. Also, do you think that approach would work with children in an average suburban house with a small backyard? Just thinking if they will really be able to explore/create and find their interests as much if not on a big property? Thanks for the advice!

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really think the child lead learning is the same thing by a different name. And yes, I think it could be done anywhere! You might just have to be a little more intentional to expose your children to exciting places in nature where they can explore. But I know many families follow this learning style even while living in cities without outdoor “nature” access.

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are almost always hanging on me 😜 so they are there for all of our reading time...from picture books to family chapter books. We also read to our little ones at bedtime, those fun toddler books that are such classics. Past that I think that learning comes very naturally to the toddler/preschool age. As I go throughout my day it’s very natural to model counting out loud, or naming the colors or shapes of objects. Even learning which foot is “left” or “right” as you put on their shoes. All of this can be done very naturally without the child even realizing they are learning. And they are such little sponges that they will soak it all up easily!
