  • Comparing two Jimnys with similar suspension setups but one has open diffs and the other as locked diffs.

    Yup, that is about the perfect setup. I choose to stay with 31s, since I have more flex, which I have never found too many situations where the 1" or so extra clearance on the diffs helps much, but found many situations where the extra flex is helpful. For a while, I ran 3" of a lift and 29s, which I could crawl through just as many things as the guys with 33s could. They just had me on breakover angle.

    Great video for making the point of diff lock or not. I've seen a few examples on You Tube (with ARB) but I think this one makes it crystal clear. What are those wheels 15 inch? That's mighty impressive.

    @metalheadfrlife22 Yes, in the video it looks easy, but without lockers is very difficult even for cars with very good flex and big tires, so i can assure you that no stock cherokee would make it. The point of the vid is to see the difference of having or not having lockers. Both jimnys have similar suspensions setups, the only difference is that one have an air locker and the other one does not.

    Yup Lockers are great!!
    Had similar situations with my Jeep Cherokee, no lockers (XJ the real one not the new petunia stomper). Now with my rubicon JK wrangler its so much better.

    @andrademeza if you have "open diffs" the power moves like water to each wheel. so when first guys front right tire lifts off, the diffs send all the power there and spin it while the tires on the ground get nothing. "Lockers" make it so all 4 wheels spin exactly the same no matter what. then there's an in-between called a "limited slip diff" which will allow a little bit of wheel spin before making the other turn. "airing down" is letting air out of tires to make em soft and grippy

  • @georgioska4x4
    @georgioska4x4 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    jimny with 4wd has something like central differential which divides torque 50% to the front axle and 50% to the rear ,meaning if one wheel to the the front axle is in the` air` and one to the rear too then car stands steel. So lockers put to rear and front axles make off roading easier.

    it's called a suzuki jimny. if trackers and sidekick are the son of the samurai, it's kind of like the grandson of the samurai. straight front axle, proper 4wd. comes with open diffs but lockers are available. it's be cool if they were sold in usa and canada.

    Greater articulation = Greater chance of keeping all 4 on the ground 😎

    Although Im sure with the proper line and swaybar connected a Cherokee or fullsize truck with a longer wheelbase would have made it. Nothing to take away from the Jimny, they are sweet little offroad rigs. Some rigs handle certain trails better than others. Its a situational thing more than a capability thing. Happy Offroading!

      If the Jimny was a bad car ? the EU wouldn't have stopped the import of it to favor it's own produced SUV's by German and French brands

  • @Car-crazy
    @Car-crazy 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some AWD cars have both 4WD and AWD settings on them like my Mitsubishi Delica for example.
    On AWD the computer manages how much power each wheel gets and varies it according to terrain.
    If I put it on to LOCK then all four wheels receive exactly the same power, which allows the car to go through much rougher terrain, deeper snow, etc.
    Locked wheels gives the car more off road capabilities than non locked or AWD!

    • @regan44017
      @regan44017 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong. All you are doing with that system is locking the centre diff. Both front and rear diffs are still open or if you are lucky, the rear is A LSD

    Fair enough, from a fellow XJ enthusiast and owner I will choose to believe you are correct. Maybe its just the camera angle, but the trail looks way less intense then anything i've taken my stock xj through. I'm putting a 4.5 in lift with 32/11.50 tires on, and getting a warn winch. Once those upgrades are on, my little jeep cherokee will be unstoppable.

    ¿Poderíasme dicir que melhoras tenhen os carros na suspençao? Pode-se ver muita articulaçao. ¿Levan tamen bodylift? ¿Tamanho dos pneus?
    Eu tenho um samurai, pero estou a pensar en mercar um jimny e a minha ideia é facer uma preparaçao semelhante á dos vossos carros.
    Felicitaçoes polos carros, sao impressionantes!!

  • @justin76bmw
    @justin76bmw 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    wrong. 4wheel drive engages the front axle(FtoR). lockers disable the differentials(LtoR), making it a strait axle. witch sucks for steering but makes it unstopable.

  • @bearlives1

    are those jimnys the 1.3vvt models?

  • @Car-crazy
    @Car-crazy 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    To make things clear here as there appears to be a lot of confusion.
    1st there is 4WD where all four wheels drive together and will have some form of diff lock, which may partly or fully lock all four wheels or may only lock front and rear as pairs.
    When all four wheels are fully locked as above then all four wheels have equal power and drive equally.
    More recently cars have AWD where all four wheels turn but are not locked ....continued below...

  • @thehairs1970
    @thehairs1970 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    The red driver gets cross-axled and drives with a very heavy foot. Black driver is so much more composed and less throttle happy. I know lockers make a difference but there's more going on here.

    • @edwardbaylis1712
      @edwardbaylis1712 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thehairs1970 I was thinking exactly that. I reckon my standard Jimny on road tyres would have made that. It has handled a lot worse with no mods. Poor driving.

  • @NVJeepXJ
    @NVJeepXJ 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No, a stock Cherokee wouldn't make that. If you look at the suspension articulation, you will see, that no matter the line, it just kept losing traction on one front tire. My XJ with 4" of lift and 31s would probably do it, but I have a LOT of flex and a very good LSD.

    When Jimnys are switched to 4WD.. arent they always locked..? so this video basically shows a jimny in 2wd against a jimny in 4wd..? ... or am i wrong..?

    • @salimbatel6571
      @salimbatel6571 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no the 4wd is operational in the two jumnys , but one has open differentials in the front and rear so the wheel loosing traction wil have the torque and the other will not spin , so the lockers will send torque to both wheels so they turn with same torque and it will be easy to get out

    as for the friend with stock cherokee i suppose means cherokee 2005 -2008 which they have electronic brake lock differential called `select trac`.if you mean these models ok. but if you mean stock cherokee before 2005 without this system then you `d struggle like first jimny.

  • @metalheadfrlife22
    @metalheadfrlife22 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am confident that i could make it up that in my stock cherokee sport no problems. I don't know why this vehicle was struggling so much without lockers. It looks like a pretty easy trail. I am officially not a fan of the jimny because of this video.

  • @metalheadfrlife22
    @metalheadfrlife22 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You ever think that jimnys just suck in general, thats why you needed lockers to make it up that? I'm telling you man a Cherokee xj in 4 low would make it. My jeep has made it up some of the toughest trails, and it keeps surprising me everyday. I can see lockers making a difference if it was muddy, but its not. I'm sorry but you should have gotten a jeep!
