    This movie came out at the end of the Great Depression. In Mississippi, it was still more like the middle of that period. My Aunt Ina who was just 11 wanted to see it terribly--they got old movie magazines from the bookmobile that came by. She learned that there would be a special showing for children at the only theater in Utica. It would cost 5 cents. She had one cent saved up. She found another penny between the floorboards of the old house. Her older brother lent her a penny, and she worked at the house down the road to earn another. But still it was only 4 cents. She went to the movie theater and stood in line and explained to the ticket lady that she had only 4 cents, but that she promised she would leave before the ending. The lady with tears in her eyes told her to just go in and enjoy the FULL movie. That is a great story.

    I love the irony in the dialogue in this scene. Hunk (who is played by the same actor as the scarecrow), talks about not having brains, and says "You're head ain't made of straw", and Zeke (who's actor is also the cowardly lion), encourages Dorothy to have courage.

      MaskedMan66 More than foreshadowing, it's what Freud called "day residue", primarily events that happen in our waking lives the day we dream get filtered through our subconscious and become symbolic in our unconscious state. (6/21/18)

    • @MaskedMan66

      @@MaskedMan66 I agree with Henry Jackson. Dorothy's mind created these magical characters based on the people she knew. That's why at the end, she says "You, you, you... and you were there." Another person who was "there" was Miss Gulch whom Dorothy had called a wicked witch.

    • @MaskedMan66

    A wonderful story:
    Not long after seeing The Wizard of Oz, a little girl named Natalie Norris fell ill and was hospitalized. Her mother wrote to MGM and relayed her daughter's wish that she could get a visit from Dorothy. They called Judy, who was of course delighted to do it, and sent Natalie a letter telling her that they had a date. She wanted to come in full Dorothy kit, but by that time everything had been put away in storage, so Judy wore a simple frock and her own short hair, and Natalie didn't mind a bit. Judy chatted with her a while and even sang "Over the Rainbow" to her, bringing Natalie's mother to tears. Later, Natalie showed rapid improvement, and not only recovered, but later in life became a singer herself!

    To all you young ones out there, the way this movie was seen by us “oldies“ in the 1950s and 60s was that they played it once a year on television. As you probably know we didn’t have VHS, DVD‘s or digital back then. We just had television (cable TV did not exist.) We only had seven channels, and our TVs were black and white. So for most of us for many years, we were seeing the entire movie in black-and-white. We did realize that once they get to munchkin land the movie goes to color. Our parents had probably seen the movie at the theaters when they were young. But, it was not playing at the theaters in my generation. It wasn’t until the mid 60s that people started getting color TVs. So I actually didn’t see this in color until I was about 13 years old even though I had been watching it since I was about five. But like I said, they only played it once a year and it was always a big deal, and we made sure to not miss it. This was nationwide. This is a great movie. It has everything. Perfect casting, a wonderful story. It’s a comedy, a drama, fantasy, & musical.

    I've always loved the Wizard of Oz. It's easily in my top three favourite movies of all time. That being said, look, I know this is a fantasy, but if you think about it, some things don't seem to add up. I've always wondered how Uncle Henry was able to pay the three farmhands because the farm appears to be struggling and this looks to be set during the Dust Bowl period. Not to mention, all three farmhands have marked East Coast accents. What brought them so far out West, I wonder? Just the little things of life to ponder...

    • @MaskedMan66
      @MaskedMan66 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Scarecrow's counterpart was named Hunk, not Huck, and Prof. Marvel turned up in Oz not only as the Wizard, but as the Guardian of the Gates, the Cabbie, and Soldier Omby Amby-- not to mention the ersatz Head. As for Miss Gulch, the stage version of the MGM musical has it that a telegraph pole fell on her and broke her leg. While she's on the mend, Henry and Em will smooth things over with the Sheriff as regards Toto.
