Daughter of the moon goddess was a 5* read for me bc it was so fast paced haha i love that the book didn’t drag out her journey thru 3 whole books and bc i watched Chinese dramas growing up, i could really visualize the entire story. My least favorite thing to encounter when reading is when I’m nearing the end of a book and we’ve only gotten to leg 1 of a hero’s journey
I love that I’m not the only person who watches all the random Bravo shows. I love to rewatch them from the start and read during commercials or the parts I remember.
I just wanted to say you are my favorite book tuber! I have been silently following you for years, and I can consistently put on a reading vlog to watch or have on in the background of cooking or studying. Thank you for being so great!!
I think going all white for the walls was totally the right choice! It’s bright and fresh and like you said, the perfect blank canvas for if you want to do something else in the future. Also painting the stone backsplash white is exactly what I would’ve done too 😁
Everything I hear about this book makes me not want to pick it up. It’s SUCH a gorgeous cover that it’s hard to believe the story doesn’t match! Great color choice! Can’t wait for each little reveal!
I just discovered your channel last week and I love it! Congratulations on the house and fresh paint. I use Caraway pots and pans and love them. As long as you follow the care instructions they will last a really long time.
The green color in the kitchen is so nice! And I agree that painting that stone might have seemed a bit odd at first, cause who paints stone? But, it turned out so well!
Been to the brownstone a few times. Nice place. That is the town I was born in, we owned a house there until a few years ago. I lived there only until 5th grade then we moved to the town where a few housewives lived. Was there until 2000. Now I live two towns always from where Teresa lives saw her old house once. Joe (her brother) saw once in a bank. Haven’t watched show in more than a year. Your painting is getting there. Very nice.
I had the exact same feelings about the book! I felt it got a lot of hype and my expectations skyrocketed, which is probably why I thought it was entertaining but not mind blowing. Also, love the paint! :) Congrats!
I really appreciate this fair review! I’m finding myself less drawn to these ‘pacey’ YA style reads lately, so I think I’ll skip this one, although the cover is one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Ah, so bummed you didn't totally love DotM but I totally understand. I definitely liked that things didn't drag out but the pacing was very strange sometimes, admittedly, and I totally agree that things sometimes worked out a little too simply. I'm hoping the next one is better in that regard. But, I was just so entranced by the world that I didn't care haha.
This book has been getting so much buzz, but it didn't really hit for me, I'm glad to see someone who agrees! I also wasn't able to get invested in the characters, and imo I thought that the plot strucutre was just a bit too basic, which was a bummer bc I loved the setting. Also love the green cabinets!
YAY light green! I'm sad you painted over the stone but you're absolutely right--it's your house and you should do what you like. Bummer about the book. I had it on my TBR but now I'm not sure I'll read it.
Everything you're saying about the book is what I'm feeling as well! For me, it seems like pacing issues come down to the fact that the author needed to provide an intense amount of detail/background information in order to get to the story she actually wanted to tell. The first third of the book ended up reading like a huge laundry list of plot beats that needed to happen in order for something else to happen. Not only was I not able to connect with the characters, but it made it fairly clear what was going to be important and what wasn't. Ex: that shell she recorded a song into. She got it at that completely random market; then in the next chapter it is two years later, and she just kind of has this shell rattling around in her junk drawer. I haven't finished the book, but I'm assuming that this is a red herring/distraction tactic to get us to forget/not focus on the belts they've infused their spirits into. Or how the author only shared information on ONE herbology class. Again, I haven't finished, but because it was one of the plot points focused on, while not focusing on others, I assume that the information she found out in that class is going to play into the story later. In closing to my unasked for rant, I wish the editor had helped the author restructure the plot to avoid the D&D backstory first third, and instead weave it in nicely during the rest of the book. :)
I agree with pacing. It reminds you of c-dramas. More specifically Princess Agents and Ashes of Love. I think the author pulled inspiration heavily from them. I still liked it.
Exciting about the house painting! I have to admit, in the opening scene when you said the painter had gotten started I was thinking: I really like the dark color you chose behind the bed! Then you said he had only worked in the kitchen and all the walls will be white. Oops! 😄 I don't mean that as a judgment or criticism of your choices in any way - I was just amused by my own mistake. Please don't be hurt if anyone judges any of your choices - painting the stone in the kitchen, color choices, whatever - it is none of any of our business! Enjoy it! Also, FWIW (see, "it is none of any of our business"), I think the kitchen looks gorgeous with your choices!
As someone who just had their whole house painted, make sure you don’t interact with the walls too much for the next month! The paint needs to cure! 🙈 I really underestimated just how sensitive the paint is at first!
I know how it feels to have a construction zone for a kitchen, my husband and I are repainting our kitchen cabinets and it was a slow moving process, but we just have one more door to finish painting and put back on.
Ugh I've heard so much about this book and it as so excited for it. I'm hoping I enjoy it like I want to but I've heard ao many people say something similar
I ended up listening to the audiobook for Daughter of the Moon Goddess so for me it didn't feel like the pacing was off. I felt like it moved along quickly enough without it being dragged out. I hate when books take forever to get to the good stuff. That definitely happened with All of Us Villains. I almost dropped the audiobook because it felt like the first half was taking too long with the build up, but I stuck with it and ended up really liking the story. I think I loved DOTMG because I'm a huge fan of Sailor Moon and the story kinda reminded me of the series. So my opinion might have a little impartial bias 😆
the audiobook was so good wasn't it! I listened to it and read along at the same time and it was such an immersive experience. I really loved this book.
I also listened to the audiobook and loved it! Never had the feeling that the pacing felt off, but I usually read a lot of slow stories so this one didn't feel slow at all. 😆
same! listened at 2x, and i loved it. Don't care for the person she's ended up with so far, i liked the other one (don't come for me, lol) but can't wait for the next one.
ahhh so sad you didn't like DotMG! We read it for BowtiesandBooks/Jesse's Patreon bookclub this month and I loved it! I do agree that some elements of the pacing could have been slowed down, but I still ate it up and just loved it, I think Sue Lynn Tan is such a talented writer, there were some lines that just really blew me away. I enjoyed the love triangle a lot, which I hardly ever do, and the reveal at the end really caught me off guard. I gave this book 4.25 stars initially, but it wasn't really sitting right so I upped it to a five. dying for the sequel!
I *lost it* at the visual of the coffee pot on the floor 😂 but I’m also in the process of moving, so there’s nothing I understand more at this point lol
Have you read 'The girl who fell beneath the sea' by Axie Oh? This is really good mythological retelling. I think this would definitely be up your street
Completely agree!!! 150 pages through this novel i felt no attachment to the characters whatsoever because of how FAST everything was happening, so i DNFed.
Honestly when I read the daughter of the moon goddess it gave me the same vibes as the spin the dawn duology which a meh duology for me. Like she had to go infuriate the palace, disguise who she was, and then go on an impossible quest to gain an enchanted item. Also the thing that I found weird is because it reads like this happening over months even though the author talks about years of time passing maybe it’s because they’re immortal so years are like days to them in a sense.
i really loved DOTMG's world building, detailed descriptions and the plot and character arcs, but the thing that really kept turning me off was the way the author wrote xingyin's narrative. it just felt very amateur (i thought it would get better as the story progressed to signify her growth but no it's just the author's inexperienced writing lol), there were too many uses of the word "which" when in many contexts it could & should have been replaced by "that" instead. but the author grew up in hong kong where english is not their native language, so i can excuse that poor writing, but it still nevertheless affected my reading experience. haven't finished the vlog yet so i don't know what are your final thoughts, but these were mine. i think the author really needed a better editor lol but i hope her writing improves for the 2nd book bc as a fellow Asian i really do want to see her do well :) p.s. regarding what you said about seeing it as a drama, that's bc it's a xianxia (chinese costume drama genre) inspired story!! which was really special for me bc as a frequent watcher of chinese costume dramas, i was able to picture everything from the setting to the costumes.
Love that green color! Why can't you use the dishwasher or the oven for a week though, I'm confused about that Also: I saw someone do a 24 hour reading vlog, where instead of seeing how much they could read in 24 real time hours, they started and stopped a timer whenever they were reading, and read until they had clocked 24 reading hours. I thought that was interesting
You're house is looking really nice. I personally loved the fast pacing in the book. The only issue I had was how easy it was for her to get the pearls from the 4 dragons. When the emperor sent her on the quest, I was like how is she going to get all the pearls and save her mom when there's not that many pages left.

OMG YOUR KITCHEN :D It's turning out so nice!!! Also, I totally agree with Daughter. I RAGE finished it because I was so mad at it for being so so so disappointing, I ended up giving it a 1 star for lack of character development (especially in our "special snowflake" MC and the just boring love interests) and the worldbuilding was... not it. It was such an intriguing idea, and it fell so so so so hard for me. Sad!

Coffee and books (and tea) are indeed life essentials.

The coffee on the floor had me CACKLING 😅 the love you have is real lol
Love the house progress & big thanks for sharing during this upheaval & mess.
I don't know why it's mandatory to tell dogs "Good stretch" or "Oh wow, big stretch," but it is. I don't make the rules.
I read a meme that said if someone doesn’t say “big stretch” when a dog/cat stretches then you shouldn’t trust them 😂
I say that to my dog, too.
Gonna start saying it to myself when I do my morning stretch. We deserve to be cheered for the little things too!!
I say "Yawwwn" in a funny voice every time my doe yawns, it is required. (I also congratulate her on her excellent stretches)
It's actually illegal not to.
