2:23 Edda Moser can't be praised enough for how she gets that pianissimo C with no portamento at all. Listen to all the other soprano, they all make even the slightest portamento to get there. She doesn't. She goes straight for it, and manages to make it pianissimo too. Wonderful stuff. Bernstein best conductor of all times.
It is hard to even fathom how lucky we are to have this footage and this recording and to have this contribution to the achievement of all humanity. This is more than a piece of music. This piece speaks deeply and profoundly to the most powerful and wonderful parts of the spirit inside each of us. Consider yourself lucky that you have found it and heard it.
A finale with 1,000 voices or just one this is one spectacular composition. The voices always push for the high range in the key. Exciting and just beyond excellence.
In my opinion Mahelr was one of the most important people to ever be born… with his music he brought the strongest metaphor for the sacred, heavenly and divine…
WHAT A GREAT VERSION ! Beautiful music. Some of Mahlers Finest this Final. Bernstein was a genius, Incredible performance by a fantastic worldclass Orchestra. This is simply heaven. The best version that excist of this piece in my opinion. When will the world see geniuses like Mahler and Bernstein again ? !
Wauw. Incredible !!!! This is so intense and beautiful. Grande Bernstein and great choir and orchestra. The best version without question. With Mahler no one came near or touched Leonard Bernstein.
Love the camera work, the sound, the orchestra, the slow tempi, the broad hand gestures and intense face expressions of mr. Bernstein, but the organisation behind the concert really should have hired a bigger chorus. They are virtually inaudible at the last words they sing, because they simply cannot compete with such a huge and loud orchestra. It would be my all-time favorite "Alles vergängliche" if the chorus was just two, maybe even three times bigger.
that part can't be praised enough, just compare it with other sopranos. They all do a portamento to get that note, I've also heard one version where M.J. Wray can't even hold the note. Moser here just goes straight to it. Amazing singing, amazing conduction
Even though the 8th symphony is not my favourite my Mahler, the finale is absolutely amazing. Like the subtitles say, it is heavenly music! Also, thank you for the Chinese subtitles that allows Mahler to be understood by a wider audience. The translations are great.
That was then. So wha't Lenny up to now? And what about Tilson Thomas. Love them. L0dkf... you... right now. On time, from above time to on time.... entering into time, lighted vision. Hi guys. moi
It takes courage to say so, but I agree! There is a moment of awkward transition at 3:47 here. Shaw handled it brilliantly. th-cam.com/video/thDPsDdcwQ8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S85GXci4aEOVioWs
Vienna Philharmonic- Vienna Boys Choir. Looks like late 70s- maybe early 80s.The entire performance is on youtube, including soloist's names under the title.
I have it on the Highest Authority or near the Highest Authority because the communique was from Archangel Michael and it was this: There will be times when Yahweh is not available...evidently He has been asked to inspire a music composer named Gustav Mahler who is composing a symphony that will, with Yahweh's help, reach for the Heavens and I have, as is my privilege, looked to the future and I have to say God and Gustav have succeeded!
The problem i have with Bernstein is that he made it about himself ...yes he was a musically equipped genius...but simon rattles interpretation beats the pants off of this!
No match against Klaus Tennstedt with London Philharmonic. Bernstein's volatile style give way to much sophisticated, well balanced recent interpretations by other conductors AFTER his death. His Brahms was good, but not Mahler.
th-cam.com/video/y5aRbgr0m9U/w-d-xo.html I find. Also wonderful! I love the splendor of both conductors. It all exists next to eachother instead of two fighting little boys. Thanks for the hint, @Liau Chung Ren

That’s probably what you would realize at the end of your life. So wonderful.

The 8th Symphony belongs in a class of its own...

I believe the genius was primarily Mahler, no?
Mahler e Bernstein i migliori dei migliori per sempre!!!!
Bernstein was the great Mahler interpreter. End of story.
Domenico Nanni What planet are you on?
Domenico Nanni: Maybe the end of YOUR story.
Couldn't be more correct, no one quite got this finale like Bernstein did
@@Ale-qf1pm I agree that Bernstein was a great interpreter but there are many others….. thankfully!
Wauw. Incredible !!!! This is so intense and beautiful. Grande Bernstein and great choir and orchestra. The best version without question. With Mahler no one came near or touched Leonard Bernstein.
From his earliest performances even children looked with deep adoration at the conductor.
It’s beautiful music and conducted by a Master
Great upload. Your love for this heavenly music is beautifully expressed. Thank you so much!

Merveilleux merci a vous !!
Bernstein beautiful maestro !!!!
Salut de Marseille !!!!
Lenny got everyone to their heights. Always look at the players .
The soprano at 2:23 whoever she is, is wonderful.
It's Edda Moser
Not to forget about the basses at the beginning of the choir...goooooooosebumps.....
The wonderful Edda Moser is her.

This is the greatest Edda Moser!!!) Listen to her Sempre Libera, and the Queen of the Night!
Grande capolavoro di Mahler direttore stupendo.

OMG! Repeat after me: 2nd Symphony, 2nd Symphony, 2nd Symphony!!!!
thnak you len you know
01:35 Leony is like: "Keep the Ab in tune please!"
VALEVA LA PENA DI NASCERE SOLO PER SCOPRIRE UNA COSA!DEL GENERE

It’s all about God.
GREATE INTERPRETATION of GREATE MUSIC
There could be a movie about Lenny. I think Ian McKellen would be a great Leonard Bernstein.
Will be. Jake Gyllenhaal will be play Bernstein.
I still think the Shaw/Atlanta performance is possibly the best.
in ur humble opinion!
Simon Rattle at the British Proms a few years ago topped it.
It takes courage to say so, but I agree!
There is a moment of awkward transition at 3:47 here.
Shaw handled it brilliantly.

❤️❤️❤️ non plus ultra
stupenda
Oh no... Not by heart :( So dissapointed... just kidding. Amazing really. :)
All that is transitory (as is life).
Nothing to do with Bernstein or Rattle...
It’s about Faust, saved by God and Maria.
Orchestra, venue, year?

What silly and entirely superfluous subtitles near the end!
The problem i have with Bernstein is that he made it about himself ...yes he was a musically equipped genius...but simon rattles interpretation beats the pants off of this!
Yes, this was the worst thing about him.
He was a Jew, that's what Jews do, they make it about themselves.
Rattle did have that extra thousand though and still no comparison. Two great conductors, two different deliveries.
Bruno Anthony- It needs to be publicly said that you are an asshole!
No !!!
aaahahahahha 1 don t like!!!!! the people are from outside,,,,,,..-.,.-.,what a treat!
You forget Maher was Jewish.
Was soll der Kommentar uns sagen ❓
too bad the trumpet fucked up the last note. absolutely ruined and unlistenable.

Nothing wrong with you that a frontal lobotomy wouldn't fix.

The ending is a little slow and not particularly smooth for that very reason clueless, typicall Bernstien nothing special.
I was there and believe me it was more than special. Although the LSO performance is probably slightly better
