Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is an incredible and electrifying film. The screenplay is just as good as the stage play, and I don't say that often. All four of the performances are a masterclass in acting.
Richard Burton not getting the Oscar for this performance was utterly heartbreaking. This play is a work of absolute brilliance, brilliantly performed. I have always thought of it as the most tragically beautiful dysfunctional love story. It's like an onion that you can never completely peel. The layers go on and on. Some thoughts are that George and Martha were based on Willard Maas and Marie Menkin, friends of Edward Albee, whom he would stay with and were notorious for their drinking weekends and fights. Fun fact: Marie Menkin taught Andy Warhol how to use a hand held movie camera. Great video! Thank you!
One of the greatest American movies ever made...with outstanding performances by four great actors ..yet to be matched..liz taylor a triumph in this role
Great review. It's hard to describe how shocking this play was when it was first released. The clergy were denouncing it from their pulpits. I saw it when I was 14 - I had to sneak into the theatre - and the local parish priest was there too - dressed as a civilian. I'd really love to see a 5th grade production. Liz Taylor was 33 when she made this and at the height of her beauty. She put on weight, lowered her voice and wore horrible make-up. She was the very first actress to de-glamorize herself. It's still a masterpiece. I'd love to see a 5th Grade production.
I love that you guys picked this movie to review. You guys should start reviewing more classic movies like this one. I would suggest some great ones like SUNSET BLVD., THE LITTLE FOXES, JEZEBEL, REBECCA, to name a few.
This is one of your best reviews...I watched the movie last night for about the 10th time. What you say about where you are in your own life, etc can have an effect on how you perceive a movie you're seen before. I now consider this a flawed, but great film. It has a couple of spots where it drags, late in the film (the very long scene for George and Martha in the parking lot of the dance club could have been shortened to its last couple of minute in my opinion.) But I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars for the great performances of Burton and Taylor, their perfect delivery of the brilliantly sharp, very funny dialog, and Nichols' direction. In an acting class in college I had the audacity to use George's famous "Bergin" monolog. I was far too young to even understand how to put that across: Burton was an acting master and that scene alone could prove it, not to mention the rest of him in the film. Taylor is incredible. In critic interviews I was reminded that people did not take Taylor seriously as an actress until this film.
I like this film, but for me, The Lion in Winter is even more masterful at seeing people just tear each other to shreds. Would be another classic film that would be great to review.
If you watch classic movies, you should watch: (1.) All About Eve ; (2) Sunset Boulevard; (3) Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? I think Joseph would enjoy all of them.
I literally gasped when I saw that you were doing this review. This is what has been missing from my life. There were so many funny lines in this film. Nick doesn't miss a beat, you bring up every single aspect that makes this such a gem. We're talking about a couple of characters who are infinitely capable and skilled at insulting one another and anyone else who is unfortunate to be in the room b/c they are far more intelligent than their target. Hearts, hearts, hearts!! Sometime you should cover Picnic. Me and my friends watch it every year on Labor Day.
Thanks for posting this. I actually couldn’t get through this movie a few years ago, because of the constant arguing amongst Elizabeth Taylor’s and Richard Burton’s characters (I literally stopped the movie and watched something else). I don’t get into any of shouting match type of movies, podcasts, tv shows like the Housewives, Kardashians, Braxtons, etc…I’m glad that you both enjoyed this movie and Thanks for posting.
Just watched it! The acting was superb! The plot reminds me of Strindberg's "The Dance of Death" - a couple being vicious towards each other and poisoning themselves and everyone around them, but still needing that toxicity and remaining in that hateful relationship. In the end all that is left is the marriage in both plays. In "The Dance of Death" even their home was poisonous, both metaphorically and literally as there was mold in the house or something like that. Also they have kids, so when watching "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" and drawing a parallel with "The Dance of Death", we get the perspective of what could have happened should Martha and George had children. It also reminded me of another play - Ibsen's "Ghosts, in the way the story was told, we get little pieces of information throughout the play/film about the characters' past and only in the end we could see the full picture. And this was done solely throught their interaction with one another. The action in both plays is in the course of one night and in the end dawn comes and the characters have parted ways with their illusions and must finally face the truth. Great film that inspired me to also read the play. It's even played in one of the theaters in my city, so in October I'll go and watch it.
So, I never comment or watch “older” b/w movies, but after hearing your review, I just had to see it. So here’s to a bunch of firsts - writing a review, watching a b/w movie, and watching a Liz Taylor movie. Thank goodness HBO Max has it free. Here goes and thanks!
Man what a review …. This movie is a 5 in my book… Sandy Dennis was so great …she kind of ended tragic and not very old… she was good in things that were not great… wired story …used to be a guy in Hollywood who used to dress up as SUPERMAN and pose for pictures and money outside Hollywood walk of fame by the big theatre… he went by Christopher Dennis…said in a documentary he was Sandy Dennis ’ son… he was not… he died inside a clothing donation bin… Sandy was a favorite when I was a kid… we went and saw the out of Townes when I was a kid…she and jack Lemmon were so great together… Spielberg directed her in Something Evil…. This movie is an explosion captured on film… Liz and Burton were red hot in this bad boy for sure…it’s a prize fight.
18:40 lmfao I definitely see my relationship in this movie. Like when you really know your partner…I always say I know him like the back of my hand, bc it’s been more than ten years. We don’t argue a lot but some have gotten to the point were we basically roast each other. Tell the honest truth about each other and talk for hours debating about it.. it can be toxic but he is the only person I can ever be that real with(since we know everything about each other )
Ohhh the Lies we tell.. what a phenomenal portrait of real marriage. Also I love revolutionary road I would love to see your review of this classic on the dark fantasy of marriage. Pretty please
Bette Davis toured in a one woman show, the first half of which was film clips, followed by audience Q & A. The only non-Bette Davis film clip was Elizabeth Taylor and the What A Dump! that then cuts to BEYOND THE FOREST.
I watched this movie recently and I LOVED IT! It is UNHINGED in the worst way possible but it also has some kind of cathartic effect. One of my favourite movies of all time.
Great review - this movie and play are so realistic about an addictive marriage. It's not from my era, but wow I wish I could argue with my ex without cops or neighbors getting involved. Keep up the oldies guys.
WAOVW and The Boys in The Band are two films that portrayed hibitual line stepping in a way that is so uncomfortable you can't help but look. It's like driving by a car crash and turning your whole head around. Both are brilliant masters in character building and tension.
I felt inspired to find and watch this film after a marathon of your reviews. It was amazing and very complex of a story, well acted and timeless. Thank you for your recommendation. It was worth it.❤❤❤
I've always been intrigued by Martha mentioning the actor with a scar who appears in the film she's trying to name. David Brian is the "Beyond the Forest" actor in question, but George Macready was the actor with a scar of that period who resembled Brian. Always wondered if Albee knew this and was deliberately having Martha confuse the two, or if the author was thinking of Macready when he wrote the line, and thought he played the Brian role in "Beyond."
I love when you both do classic films: absolutely hilarious, brilliant, and joyous (the podcast on Singing in the Rain was ADORABLE)----I lost it when Joseph laughed at the ruckus at the bar! They were insane at that bar!!! Hehe. You both rule 🌹
For some reason I thought this was a boring ass movie. But y'all make it sound like a dinner party from hell on crack, that I want to go to 🥂 Definitely a must watch
Loved this film! Watching Liz and Dick actually be themselves! I mean , were they acting? From the old time gossip, this was probably their relationship!😅 was almost too real to watch, but Bravo 👏🏼
My husband's last name is Taylor. When we got married I became Elizabeth Taylor 🤣 I go by Liz. I get comments a lot usually from cashiers when they see my name. I'm 32. It's sad I've noticed the younger generation have no clue who Elizabeth Taylor is. Eventually I think not many people will know who she is.
I’ve never seen this film, but I’ve been aware of the plot for a long time now. Hearing you guys talk about it made me think about how similar it sounds to Eyes Wide Shut… Cruise and Kidman were a married couple in reality when the film was made, and it deals with them essentially being pretty awful to each other (I know there’s a lot more to both films)… Maybe there’s nothing there, just thought it might be worth mentioning.
I want to know who was the puritanical rat bastard who stopped Nick’s 5th grade production cause y’all all know he def could’ve adapted that play for those kids!!!!
Liz Taylor, and Sany Dennis both won award's for this movie"!👍✌️ Gosh , Elizabeth Taylor's eye's. Gonna get back to Six feet under! You guys are Awesome Sauce. Stay cool, stay safe, be Happy. Life is good.😁😘🥰
I rewatched the film last week and it is absolutely FABULOUS with stella acting. I LOVE Richard Burton, had seen him live on Broadway as Hamlet, the Shakespeare play. He was INCEDIBLE and masculinely sexy as hell!!
LOVE you both for reviewing this movie which was released a year before I was born and watched as a teenager. Joseph made an excellent point in comparing the bickering etc to A Real Housewives tell all because that movie was chock-a-block full of 60's Shade, on a WHOLE different level"!! Definitely one to suggest to my ladies (who are much older) for this week's 'Martini & Movie Madness'!! Not to tell tales *shh-hh*...but quite a few of them seem to morph into drunken versions of Elizabeth..Betty Davis and the delightful Joan Crawford rolled into one, so this movie is just what we crazy bitc*hes need !! Bless 🤣🤣❤
I only 'know' Elizabeth Taylor, being glamorous, and having unique violet eyes. So, your comments here, reeling me in to give a black and white classic movie a watch for a different 'experience!' :)

My college Friends and l would play a drinking game when we watched who's afraid of Virginia wolf , everytime someone would take a drink in the movie, we all would have to take a drink "! Those were the best of times, and the worst of times.🥺😲🤪😋🤫😎🏳️🌈😎🏳️🌈😎🏳️🌈😎🏳️🌈😎🏳️🌈😎🏳️🌈😎🏳️🌈😎🏳️🌈👍😅🤣

The fact that you tried to head a 5th grade production of this play is the reason why I love you Nick!😂😂😂
Best story ever
The parents were like wtf
Mike Nichols was such a extraordinary filmmaker!! The graduate,carnal knowledge,working girls,the birdcage,etc.. I mean come on 🙌🏼
Do not forget the television production of ANGELS IN AMERICA
You can NEVER go wrong with a Mike Nichols films. They are all special in their own way.
I love this film so much. Its very quotable " I am the earth mother, and you're all flops". What it really is is a dark comedy.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is an incredible and electrifying film. The screenplay is just as good as the stage play, and I don't say that often.
All four of the performances are a masterclass in acting.
I still eat cold fried chicken outta the fridge, perched on a countertop, b/c of this perfect movie.

Great review. Great relationship advice. This film is raw & nasty in the best way. Thanks for taking the time to review this classic.
Excellent review! Do more Classic Movie Reviews. I love your channel✊🏾
Easily one of my favorite films of all time. I love when you two review the classics!!👏🏽👏🏽 Beautiful review💛
Sandy Dennis nailed her starring role as a novice teacher at an urban school in Up The Down Staircase.
“Why Martha, your Sunday chapel dress.” This film is incredible, with four amazing performances.
The play is set in New Carthage, a fictional town in New England.
I would marvel at an adaptation of this story by Nick for 5th graders. Get back to it Nick!
I turned 50 years old this year, grew up with my parents loving Richard Burton and Liz Taylor and I have never watched this. I will today though!❤

I saw this about 20 years ago live with Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin. But I would like to trade that memory for watching you in 5th grade.
So lucky
Oooooo you guys....PLEEEEAAAASE do Come Back, Little Sheba from 1952 (reminds me of this too). Great review! This movie is CRAZYYYY!
Loved that movie!

Takes place in the Pioneer Valley of W. Mass. Prestigious private colleges there include Smith, Amherst, and Mt. Holyoke.

Omg I must watch this movie today! This movie sounds crazy!😯
I looooooove this movie…. “You have ugly talents Martha…”

Great review! I am off to rewatch.
Great review! You both look dashing, and I see you've reached twenty K!!!!!!!!!!!
For some reason I thought this was a boring ass movie. But y'all make it sound like a dinner party from hell on crack, that I want to go to 🥂
Definitely a must watch
Loved this film! Watching Liz and Dick actually be themselves! I mean , were they acting? From the old time gossip, this was probably their relationship!😅 was almost too real to watch, but Bravo 👏🏼
Oh this movie was amazing. Especially the ending I didnt see that coming!
I don't usually watch older movies but this one sounds good, thanks for oping my eyes a lil bit more !!

The movie was filmed in Western Massachusetts…. I think it evokes a New England college town..
Could you do a review of The Fox with Keir Dullea and Sandy Dennis? From the sixties.
Thanks!
Thank you!
i wanted to tell you about the little girl who lived down the lane one of my favorites
LOVE you both for reviewing this movie which was released a year before I was born and watched as a teenager. All I can say is WOW. It was so good. Thank you! 🎉 George Segal was handsome.
"You're ALL flops and I'm the Earth Mother"
I only 'know' Elizabeth Taylor, being glamorous, and having unique violet eyes. So, your comments here, reeling me in to give a black and white classic movie a watch for a different 'experience!' :)
Mad I missed this premiere drop 😤
I just watched the 3 minute trailer for this film. OMG!!
❤Sandy Dennis
Can you guys review the film Doubt. Meryl Streep and the latest Inside with William DeFoe
Absolute classic 💟
I definitely plan to watch this movie after seeing this review, lol.
I was a volunteer usher in a theater when they were putting on this play. I was 14, and saw WAOVW four times! I hated it! It really messed me up!
Now, I just watch and appreciate the acting, and wish the characters would all just go to therapy together. Like I had to after I watched this four times live.
Also, isn't Tennessee Williams the archeologist in all those action films? No... I guess that would be Indiana Jones... : D
kidding...kidding.
I honestly couldn't follow the plot from this review. All I understand is that this is a movie about terrible people. So, since I don't like those stories, I know to avoid this movie. But I'm glad you had fun.
The setting is a small New England college town in the summer.
Elizabeth Taylor said in an interview that she didn’t like Butterfield 8, thought it was a poor film. She said she thought she got the Oscar because of the drama of her having a tracheotomy in the back of an ambulance, lol.
Oh yes!! Finally🙌🏼
Wow I have to see this film again. I was too young to get it.
I saw this when I was a kid and I was terrified of Virginia Wolf 🐺! Lol
Great video as always! You should watch the SNL parody of this with Charlize Theron titled Cocktail Hour for a laugh
Happy birthday
Great review, guys. Just curious: Are you a couple? I think you're both cute.
George mentioned "Warner Brothers Epics". A slight joke. Warner did not make epics
That whole part with the shared imaginary son is already kind of messed up to begin with but to have one break their agreed upon rule and say he is dead is all kinds of messed up and beyond the pale petty! I laughed at that part because it is so absurd but then found it disturbing and messed up!
Martha's accent says they live in the northeast somewhere
Can you guys review “Parting Glances”
