Good video. I'm a gringo who was adopted and raised by a Mexican American family very close to the Texas/Mexico video of South Texas. Spanish is my first language. I was around cantinas in South Texas and Mexican border towns (Progreso, Matamoros, Reynosa). I've seen people get stabbed and die from knife fights. I'm also a former Marine who spent time in the Philippine Islands and also spent time in Tijuana Mexico when I was stationed at MCRD San Diego as permanent personnel after going through boot camp and spending a year overseas.. I've been a student of the Martial Art of Escrima since the 1980s. I've also worked as a Spanish Interpreter and MHA (Mental Health Associate) in Mental Health facilities. I'm retired but train with blades every day of different lengths. I carry a knife where it is legal to do so. Navajas from different cultures are interesting, from Machetes, to Navajas, to Karambits, to Bolos, and butterfly knives. They're all dangerous, but have an interesting history. Too many people underestimate how dangerous a knife can be especially by someone who is not trained and over-estimate their ability to draw a firearm to protect themselves against one. I also train with firearms. In some parts of America and the world you're more likely to encounter a dangerous person with a knife than you are with one carrying a firearm. Thank God I live in Texas where I can legally carry a firearm and/or knife in many more places than other parts of the country...:)
The Spanish Navaja is a utility knife, it has a comprehensive system of combat, and very few know this art today. Like others I have been studying the knife itself as well as the combat system. But it is a great knife to collect.
The first one you show at 1:30 is actually a typical French "navaja" from Thiers, with the "rattlesnake tail" ("queue de crotale" in French). Unlike most Spanish navajas, which design derives from the material it was made from: the tip of a cow horn, the French navajas are mostly metal, with the spring and blade sandwiched between two liners forming the frame of the knife, horn, bone or turtoise scales being only for decoration and ergonomy. These French navajas were produced during the 18th and 19th century mostly. In the 19th century, Spanish navajas gained the "carracas", the typical ratchet system on the heel of the blade that functions both as a safety mechanism so if a locking lug should slip, break or get rounded and not being securely held by the head of the spring, there are many other lugs for the spring to catch on and prevent the blade from entirely closing on the hand, chopping the fingers off. But the carracas is also kinda "psychologic warfare", as it's a very recognizable sound, and you know exactly it means trouble. It seems these knives were more associated with thugs and bandits than with honorable people. But over time, it became a Spanish cultural staple, and nowadays many reasonably sized navajas are still made in Albacete.
Lynn Thompson of Cold Steel Fame, yes he sold the company to GSM. He designed a knife called the Espada, as tribute to the Navaja. But the blade is much wider, but it is a folding "pocket knife" with a blade of 7.5 inches, with a great blade lock. Whether it is a reproduction, or a new incarnation of the Navaja, it does not matter. Its a beast of a knife.
The blanket name is sarape, typical blanket in mexico. Navaja means both pocket knife or folding knife, some times they were to big to be pocket. They were created because sword and machetes were expensive, but also because the goverment banned them for poor people, only the rich coul use swords. The mechete was created in spain for the same reason; so they banned swords, so the spaniards create the machete, later banned the machete, then they create the navaja.
Prohibitions only ever expand demand! If you declare that No one but you can have a weapon. Do not be surprised when people decide that they disagree with you and obtain weapons illegally. The only reason why they would ever do such a thing is because they do not trust you to properly enforce your laws in a fair and balance Way of a system. This is just one such weapon designed under such per views of government. If you wish to know more Please look up the concept of the kunai. It was originally A gardening trowel. Or the viking axe. A tool originally designed for cutting down wood. Or even the ancient pylum Not a spear originally meant for war It was intended to take down food During hunting parties. Through our arrogance we have forgotten so much. My how we might he have fallen.

Wow that was a creepy Warner Bros Cartoon pseudo mexican accent. BTW I am from Honduras and you can carry a long navaja with no issue, except you can´t enter them in banks, public transportation and government buildings. People carry machetes every day so navajas are not that much of an issue.
The Spanish did not cover their arm with a blanket. They covered it with a cape, which was to protect themselves from the cold, not the heat. Saludos desde España
