      Yeah I can see it’d be a worry. I’m currently still using Adobe and Canva, I only use Affinity Designer on iPad. But if you primarily use Affinity I can understand the concern.

      @@tabithaemma I moved to Affinity few years ago from Adobe. As a freelance designer.
      Since Canva gonna ruin Affinity in the next year, I kinda think about moving back to Adobe right now.

      @@vexillonerd when canva screws affinity over and shoots themselves in the foot by forcing their users to switch to a subscription based payment again, everybody will end up switching back over to adobe, who will in turn buy up canva and affinity and dissolve both companies together. it's all downhill from here...

      As someone who used to work on Affinity, I’m telling you that subs are INEVITABLE, because the company heads have always had money on their minds. They actually lost their integrity back in 2016.

    I purchased affinity for the non subscription model - I have been with them since they sold the package as Serif Page Plus etc. As a user who designs graphics for a house of worship - this is looking like sad news

      I understand how this would be worrisome for you. I saw they said that you will be able to keep what you already bought and updates will continue for 2.0, but it’s uncertain how future versions will be offered. Hopefully they keep a buy in full offer and have a seperate plan for Canva users.

    Canva is not organized. They don't allow you to make multiple sized graphics within one design. That is not easier. That takes way more time. This is not a good thing for Affinity users.

    • @tabithaemma
      @tabithaemma  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s really about what you are trying to do. For the full time professional graphic designer- yea Canva is limited and can be frustrating (I put off using it for years for this reason) but for DIY designers, people just making simple social media graphics for their small businesses it is easier.

    • @timz9862
      @timz9862 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@tabithaemma That can be true, but it doesn't seem any easier than using PowerPoint to me. If I gave someone a link to Envato templates for PowerPoint, they'd be able to create the same graphics that Canva does right in PPT. I think it's more based around the "hype" that Canva has around it. I mean, you can't even make a simple gradient in Canva right now without one of their add-ons. Remember that before Adobe went to a subscription, people were downloading pirated copies of Photoshop just because everyone knew what Photoshop was because of its popularity (or maybe you don't remember if you aren't as old as I am :) ) - even though there were other apps, that were cheap or even free, that could do the same thing that Photoshop could do for what the person who download it needed to do. Those apps were also not as complicated as Photoshop to learn. That person was using Photoshop only because that's what they thought they should use.

    • @tabithaemma
      @tabithaemma  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@timz9862 really interesting thoughts, about people using software because of the hype. Yes I’m that old, I used to get pirated copies of Photoshop when I was a student and in high school. I remember talking to someone once and they asked why I used Adobe when there are other similar software cheaper. For me it was the first proper design software I was exposed to, as my Dad had it on his work laptop, and would bring it home from work and as a teen, I would play around and learn how to use. I just fell in love with it and found I used it A LOT and I guess once a software is so familiar, it feels hard to change to something else and feel like you are starting over. I was very off Canvas for many years, as I felt it was very limited. But as I moved into teaching business owners how to design there own graphics, I began to find most of them used Canva and that was the tool they felt most comfortable using for design, so I began to learn how to use it so I could help my audience. There are a lot of options for design software now, and I think people tend to go for the big names as there is more tutorials and advice for how to use them and they build a reputation as being the better software, even if perhaps they aren’t.

    Canva Users will have to do some serious work to take advantage of the apps from Affinity (Simple things are easy to do in ANY app, even Adobe's. So maybe that will be enough) And Affinity Designer is STILL not the Bee's Knees when it comes to creating vector art; Adobe Illustrator still is much more feature-rich. I use *VectorStyler* as an alternative to BOTH apps.

  • @StephenBoothUK

    I suspect that a subscription model will be the way things will go. When you look at the sort of features people are asking for, or complaining aren’t there, they are the sort of things use off device storage and processing. It doesn’t make sense to offer those on a single purchase model, you get paid once then have to provide a service in perpetuity. Maybe Affinity will go to a purely subscription model, maybe you will be able to buy the software but have to subscribe or buy ‘credits’ to use the off device options.

    • @tabithaemma
      @tabithaemma  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They did make a statement to say they won’t be removing the pay once option. So maybe they will provide options like pay if full plus credits or subscription so people can choose what suits them best

    • @StephenBoothUK
      @StephenBoothUK 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tabithaemma I think it’s wait and see, but do think some sort of on going payment will be an element. I hadn’t seen anything about Canva/Affinity saying they won’t be removing the pay once option, was that quite recent? Most of what I’ve seen has been from a week or more ago. We also have to consider that what is said now may change in a year or two with how the markets shift.
      One good thing from this is that Canva have a lot of money that can be used to fund development of new features. Serif always was caught in a Catch-22 of they didn’t have the feature set to compete with the likes of Adobe or Corel in terms of innovation so struggled to grow market share and thus didn’t have the money to expand the feature set. Canva and inject funds to grow the feature set and add additional products to the suite. Personally I’m hoping for a Digital Asset Manager (like Bridge and Lightroom image libraries) that hooks into all the products, and probably into Canva itself. That’s no doubt really boring for most users, but when you have thousands of assets (images, video clips, documents, sound clips, fonts, diagrams &c) to keep track of and assign metadata to it’s really useful.

    • @tabithaemma
      @tabithaemma  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@StephenBoothUK I saw another video where they showed an email that Affinity sent out stating that they promise to keep the pay once option. But that doesn’t mean they won’t also add other options. Yes all those extras is why a lot of people stick with Adobe despite being over them. I still use Adobe for random little features that you just don’t get elsewhere.

    Will be interesting to see if Affinity continues to be an ‘on device’ piece of software. I refuse to use web integrated software.
    When I retired my company stopped supplying me with Adobe products and I didn’t purchase a subscription as I didn’t need all their products. Premiere is outdated, I don’t need RUSH or Acrobat. At $100 🇨🇦 with taxes it is simply overkill.
    I used to get mockups from Clients that used Canva and was required to make it look more professional and not template driven. They wanted original work, not something that may appear somewhere else. Affinity Designer and Publisher filled the niche nicely. I’m saddened and stunned. As long as my OS will support it I’ll be married to version 2 I guess, unless another player enters the field…

      I find it hard to give up Adobe as I am for one so used to it, but also like the Adobe Fonts and I actually do use Adobe Acrobat and Premiere a lot. If it wasn't for that I'd have switched to Affinity. Every now and then I think about it, as I sure feel ripped off by Adobe. Going to be interesting to see how this all pans out.

    As long as Affinity maintain the one-time payment for every version they make. Everything should be fine, and the worst scenario is they turn it into a subscription-based and it going to cause a lot of riots. I just bought Affinity and I am kind of scared that this might snowball down for worse. I feel like the world just cares about money more than the people. I really hope Affinity proves me wrong and maintains the one-time payment. So far I don't have faith but I will use affinity until I can't anymore and saved my work.
