The Van Halen Balance Sound

  • Hello everyone, here is part 3 of my ''Brown Sound'' videos, as promised! This one consists in replicating the tone from the Balance album which is my favorite of Ed's sound BESIDES the classic Brown Sound. Believe it or not, it is basically the same sound, same gear with a different production... Not a lot of people know this but Eddie actually used his Plexi, a Variac and his Music Man on most of the album, only a few songs involved a 5150 amp. I hope you enjoy this video, I have a lot of upcoming stuff, including a full cover with this tone, stay tuned!
    Amp: Germino Lead 55 / Variac 91v
    Speakers: Celestion Greenbacks Reissue
Guitar: Ernie Ball Music Man Axis
    FX: EVH Flanger
    Post FX: Harmonizer, Delay

@@Mr.CoachBeaulieu maybe but the sound was a bit artificial on FUCK. Apart from the bad ass sound of balance, The guitar playing is also more mature. But that’s just my opinion.

Dude....these tones are burned into my ears and brain since the first day I heard them. I would absolutely fail a blind taste test with these, thinking they were iso'd EVH tracks. This is stunning.

Ed finally reached his perfect tone in 1995-1996. The tone used on Balance and then on those 2 Twister tracks (1996) was THE most amazing guitar tone I've ever heard in my life. I mean, listen to Respect the Wind for fucks sake. Who else has a badass tone like THAT ?

    • @LouNoriegaJr

Note how on the very first chord he plays, he rakes his pick over all the strings, and with a long of force, and with special emphasis on the beginning on the low notes, and the end on the high notes. Go to 0:18 and listen to that first chord. It is an unbelievable sound. It has it all. Bottom, mids, and highs, but all the way through it, it has that open brown sound with tons of headroom.

    • @mrsbieberfeverluv

Jacobs sound and tone is truly mind boggling. But, we have to remember that if you picked his axe up , it would not sound like this. Behind or infront of Jacobs sound and tone are his incredible fingers and pick attack. Although he is an expert at any kind of finger picking there is. Unfortunately, you almost have to be a musician to understand how Jacobs fingers effect what you hear and what comes out.

Now I know why I love Balance so much, he used the Plexi. I never knew that, but you have certainly nailed those tones dead to rights with this. I wish Eddie had less of a love affair with that damned Harmonizer, but from Fair Warning on he had a hard on for it. I have heard surprisingly close versions of the Balance tones with the THR-10X from Cameron, but this is an entirely new level of perfection. Bravo, man.

Your such an amazing player and that tone nails it!! But, have to say that stubled upon an old EVH interview about Balance, and most of it was recorded using a Peavey 5150 :) Straight quote from ED.
"As usual, I have two Shure SM-57's miking one cabinet. Pretty much everything was recorded with the 5150 amp, but I did use the old Marshall Super Lead head on about three tunes. The stuff that's real clean-sounding, like "Aftershock," was done with the Marshall".

Man that sounds seriously great - you picked up on the scraping effect at the start of Don't Tell Me, which is totally the key to getting the same sound he did. Tons of tabs/books miss that.
One small thing because I know you're a stickler for accuracy - he actually plays those sliding chords in The Seventh Seal intro with this kind of shape: x-x-9-x-7-0, x-x-12-x-10-0. Check out live videos from that tour and you'll see he does it that way. I think it helps with the ease of sliding them back and forth quickly at a few points in the progression.
