Agree about Duncan and McHale. Olajuwon and McHale are possibly the best post players ever. The best I’ve ever seen. Those 2 had so many sick moves. The “Dream Shake” and the “Black Hole” (McHale). Kevins career shooting % has to be high. That fade away jumper from 10-15 ft was straight 💰
Karl Malone was great but having never won hurt him, or maybe he won with the Lakers , didn't he finish there? I can't remember but yeah McHale was unstoppable!

The first I time I saw Julius Erving was 1970 when UMass played Penn. The Quakers had Corky Calhoun, a 6-7 big guard who was a defensive specialist, who Julius just ate up and spit out even though Penn won at the Palestra. Then, in college at Philadelphia Textile a fellow gym rat told me he had seen Julius from playing at the Rucker playground in Harlem and called him best ever. We would take road trips while in college to see him in Virginia as a Squire or in New York as a Net. The most exciting day of my life as a basketball fan was the day the Sixers signed him. I named a dog I rescued “Dr. J.” because he jumped up and down 2-3 feet whenever he saw me. Class, all the way.

The 1981 and 1982 Eastern Conference Finals between Philadelphia and Boston were among the most intense playoff series I have ever seen. Just tremendous intensity, action, suspense... and great basketball.
Although some say the 84 Finals catapulted to higher heights, this 81 playoff series was VERY HELPFUL. Why, this was a Sunday afternoon game that was televised live . It wasn't a tape delayed game.
The 1981 NBA Eastern Conference Finals was about as close as any series could get. McHale’s just barely block on Andrew Toney sealed the series in Game 6. Before Lakers Celtics in 1984 this was the NBA series to watch.

I never hated Boston growing up and I knew that Bird was great. I was born and raised in Philly and I'll always be a 76er. In saying that I always respected and liked Kevin Mchale.

I am so glad to have been born in the 60s and grew up in this era seeing these games when they played a different kind of basketball 🏀 they really gave it all played injured I mean with real injuries not “ load Management “these were real rivalries they went at each other For real and a couple of fights in the mix to . like both of these HOF Legends said before LA & Boston if was Philly & Boston. Dang man the whole game is different now it is very difficult for me to watch NBA Basketball today

What a honor to have met DJ in my hometown he was in town for a golf tournament at the county club where I was working at that time got his autograph for my son class act.
I wasn't paying attention to basketball during the era these two played. Watching these videos though, it's been interesting getting an insight into the character of the names of the era. Bill Walton and Kevin McHale, and a host of others I've gained an appreciation for as people.
I love old school basketball, everything about it is so intriguing. Real rivalries, physical, guys playing with every once in their body injured. Teams stayed together longer so they had that chemistry. Post game banging in the paint. Sh8ts amazing
When those Celtics teams were on the way up julius Erving had already been playing pro ball for almost 10 years so I'm glad doc got his ring b4 Celtics took over the east he deserved it after those 3 finals loses
As contradictory as it may sound, I was a diehard fan of the Lakers since I discovered basketball back in 1970, Dr. J has always been my all time favorite player, I hated the CELTICS but was always a Kevin McHale closet fan.
People don't know that the 76ers went to 4 finals from the late 70's through early 80's. These 2 teams set a standard for competitiveness at the top of the east that ends with the 2000 Pacers
awesome Doc was a class dude. Bird tortured him at the end but 81 and 82 Doc was great. So fun to watch. Had a sweet finger roll. I'm a Boston fan so McHale is in the rafters, enough said.
I think there's too much bad blood between the 2, whereas between Mc and Doc there was only a sport rivalry and respect. Isiah has reconciled in an interview with Magic though, it was a beautiful moment

In Iverson's day(90s-00s), it was a pt guard's game. Big men fouled out defending the paint. Toney could survive Iverson's day, but Iverson wouldn't have survived Toney's day.
Larry Bird has said that Andrew Toney was one of the absolute best players that he ever played against, and that he can't believe that you don't hear more about him historically.

When asked why the 1991 Pistons walked off the court after getting swept by the Bulls, Isaiah Thomas and Laimbeer responded that’s what the Celtics had done to them in 1988. We all know that’s bs. The reason the 1988 Celtics walked off was bc the Pistons were dirty. The Pistons were dirty mofos and sore losers.
In ’87 while visiting Boston I was sitting in a small local tap room looking at a picture of Larry Bird, and the bar tender leaned over and said ….. “da gratest basketball playa’ that eva lived!” I just looked up at him and said “The Doc!” He looked back at me and said …..”um, okay!……you must be from Philly!” Then he asked me about Marvin Hagler. I told him I saw him get beat by a Philly fighter named Bobby Boogaloo Watts. Then the guy sitting next to me turns and says he fought Bobby Watts! Then all three of us said we had seen Julius in college too! Well, he was the owner, so the bar tender, the old boxer and I drank all night talking about basketball and Julius Erving……in Boston! It was one of the best nights in my life, talking basketball to other fans of the Doc…… free beer too! Philly fans are a lot like Boston fans; we have one thing in common, a hatred for New York sports teams

Sixers and celtics had wars almost every year in the playoffs then. Fights, the works but both teams and fans hated the lakers.

These guys had totally different games, but they were both class. No dances or theatrics after they won, they just took care of business.
The Lakers, Pistons and Celtics series in the 80' were fantastic, but the Sixers, Celtics series reached a level of intensity that was off the charts.

Exactly. The rivalry was Boston vs Philly long before Boston/ LA, which was more about Bird and Magic.
Philly had very very good teams from 1977-1982. In 1983 they had a great team.

1982 was the when Andrew Toney became the Boston Strangler. 20 years after Elgin Baylor hung 61 on the Celtics in a game 5.
Andrew Toney earned the nickname "The Boston Strangler" that series.
