  • In this episode I am going to present my own Interior Design Masterclass. Lately I have seen various masterclass courses becoming available, however they can be expensive, so I thought that I would share all the things I have learnt over the last ten years.
The Course is divided into five segments:
    Finding Your Style
    Living With Your Design
    Planning a Layout
    Making a Budget
    Lighting
I hope that you enjoy this course and find it useful.
Here are some links to books that I reference in this video:
Georgian Style & Design For Contemporary Living - Henrietta Spencer Churchill - amzn.to/3pxUFjb
Colefax and Fowler: The Best in English Interior Decoration - amzn.to/3s6Opk8
    Inspirational Interiors - Roger Banks-Pye - amzn.to/3bkGitF

I eat in my beautiful dining room every day beneath a crystal chandelier, as I don’t have an eat-in kitchen. But I do think people with formal dining rooms should consider using those rooms on a regular basis instead of waiting for a “special occasion.” After all, you are worth celebrating!

In my former apt, I’ve since moved, my dining room is where I hung most of my art, arranged my China and kept my clock collection. So I spent at least one meal there. I lived alone then. Of course I threw fabulous dinner parties in that room.
Now I have a new house and husband, small dining area, but even a small area is pretty special.

Good advice. I remember my father moving a washing machine into one of my rental suites and it just wouldn’t fit through the door. He then removed the trim around the door and voila! He gained the necessary fraction of an inch to allow the appliance to slide through. (This was a monster machine and not one of the petite units available now.)

Finally someone who is somewhat in the same age range as me and loves traditional, English country interior design like I do. Thank you for the video and tips! I absolutely agree with your last tip. I cannot stand bright LED lighting. We do have that kind of lighting in our ceiling in the kitchen and every time my husband turns it on, I flip the switch off. It really does give me a headache. I switch on my dining table chandelier with incandescents instead lol.

The best thing about this video is it applies to everyone. I have inherited six grandchildren 8to 16 in a custody battle and my small cottage has been upturned with pets (yes, a large airedale terrier that has his cage now in living room) . I have always decorated with lots of color and Nicolas often referred to decorating according to your individual circumstances-- which is such a validation. I have lots of slip covers and throws from Indian cottons that look lovely. I have had to accept a certain mess---but I make sure that everything from the dog bowl to linens are lovely---yes, I have grubby kids wiping their hands on beautiful monogramed linens and eating off antique Spode. They have their brushes and combs laid out on an chinoiserie platter. and I polish my copper to keep my sanity.

    More tips:
    1. If you're artistic, paint your own pieces to put on your gallery wall! You can do this for the price of whatever you've already spent on art supplies. The only other cost may be some frames, which you can recycle from old pictures, or find cheap in thrift stores or on Facebook Marketplace.
    2. Speaking of FBM, it's a brilliant place to find second-hand furniture. Most of it is very decent quality, and FB only shows you stuff that's relatively nearby. I know a girl who bought a mahogany four-poster bed for $75USD!
    3. Keep walls and hard furnishings neutral so you can easily swap out coloured accessories and soft furnishings. You can flow between "vibes" and "aesthetics" for a much lower cost using this method.
    4. Don't forget to think about storage! If you have no storage, you may as well not bother decorating your room since it'll be a mess regardless. Discreet storage could include under the bed, above the wardrobe, beneath the couch/sofa, storage footstools, etc.
    5. Keep your metals consistent. If the doorknobs or handles in your room are brass/gold-colour, I recommend sticking to gold for other metal hardware such as lamp bases, curtain rails, light switches, and ceiling light fixtures. Keep non-matching metals out of the room, or at least put away, hidden out of immediate sight. It makes the room look much more put-together and cohesive, and inspires a more luxurious feel.
I hope these tips help somebody!

Nicholas 😀 I watched your Master Class video a few weeks ago. I have been absolutely stuck as far as what to do and even where to start with decorating...making my patio home MY home. Thank you so much for your research and personal knowledge presented in your video....the tip about needing to start by figuring out what one's style choices are was a perfect starter for me! I've ended up looking at many other TH-cam channels on home design and style, and so pleasing to me...the ideas have just been coming to me. .....Traditional and French Country is what I seem to have gravitated toward.
Thanks SO much. I love so many of your wonderful videos! ....and of course the sweet additions with Sophie!

Wonderful and down to earth practical advice that can help transform a space from so-so to stunning. Your suggestions on lighting are so very true. Speaking of which, the lighting in your videos is always excellent and pleasing. It is much more professional than much of what I see online. It is obvious you put a lot of work into these "effortless looking" videos. I'm continually amazed and pleased at the quality and honesty in your videos and I thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you Nicolas for this very informative master class. I love how you point out about who will be living in the home. When you talked about plants I had to laugh at myself. My husband loves his plants and flowers he grows. In my front room we have a coffee table with potted green plants and in the middle a vase of fresh flowers. The plants thrive the room gets plenty of morning light. Again to repeat myself your videos are always so calming and relaxing. You have such a soothing voice. Sending you hugs 🤗 from your friend on the farm. You take care and stay safe.

Thank you, Nicholas! My son and his girlfriend are setting up their first apartment and have no clear style ideas. I'm sending your entire channel to them! It's not difficult to hire someone to make your home beautiful with lots of money-- although I've seen more vulgar and ostentatious places where money seems to be the object on display. Your lovely manner, generosity and sweet voice are reflected in everything you do. P.S. I am from Milan, Italy, where people are house obsessed! ;) Cheers and keep safe.

Loved the class and all the detailed explanations! I particularly liked the affordable way you decorated your wall with the beautiful botanical prints. Nicolas, this video provided a lot of good content in a short video; you addressed the main issues with several good questions and clear ideas. I love the idea of different sizes of furniture; I agree that rooms need a mix of sizes to create a visual flow. My favorite aspect of your own living space is its uniform, calm color scheme. It feels soft and restful, which is clearly your style. Bravo.

Hi! Thank you for this video. I love your house, it is beautifully decorated. I love the minimalism in the Japanese style and the beach. I live surrounded by lovely beaches and the luxurious greenery of the jungle. So I am trying to combine both. I love the light blue waters of the Caribbean, light, wind and space. I have collected many pictures from Pinterest and am making a selection of what attracts me the most. Also, for the front garden I want to do an English garden in remembrance of my mom. Then a little meditation garden japanese style on one side of my house, where I can also hang a hammock 😄.
