For mathematics: the equation could be written on my hand, but the proof for the equation would take 50 pages to explain why it all works. It's truly one of the most anti-intellectual, desperate grasps at argumentation. _No one_ with any honesty tries to bring it up. It's right there with "mucho texto, I'm not reading all that, I'm glad to hear that or I'm sorry for you"" you get from all the terminally online twitter monkeys who think that too many words means you can't be correct (memes not included).
Better reduce it down to a 3-5 word slogan to screech at people when you know you couldn't actually win an argument!

He laughs about the dummies that need a character to explicitly describe the plot to them in Blade Runner. Then, seconds later, he offers his analysis of the true message of the film which is just him repeating a line said by one of the characters nearly verbatim.

He also apparently needs it spelled out for him that FTL exists in the setting, instead of being able to infer that it does by what Roy Batty says and the ads for off-world travel and the space colonies and such that would all need it. So because he was never told it explicitly exists he claims it's a plot hole because he's decided it definitely doesn't when confronted with a line that would imply that it does.

It took me a while but then I recognized the guy. This is a CBR writer who was attacking Eric July during his ISOM first campaign, trying to find any possible excuse to criticize him: from his indie book being too expensive comparatively to main stream stuff (...), to Eric's bias (before reading the comic). At the same time, white knighting in favor of the big two (DC and Marvel) but also claiming he was in favor of indie creators.
He's an ideologue, and not even a smart one. I guess with his job going extinct, he's trying to find his niche in the TLJ defenders dark corner of the internet. Clearly, like any other journo these days, he's five years behind the curve...

@@Fauwkeshonestly that's a good question at this point. It's basically at the point where people refer to it like a film genre, except even then there's clear hallmarks for what a horror movie is for example. I think it's purely just the presentation at this point for what qualifies as a video essay. Something like this would fail 9th grade English, versus what I would actually consider "essay" would be content people like Matthew Matosis make. You know, actually well constructed scripts meant to inform and discuss a topic on a deep level. If I had to guess I imagine people consider any sort of scripted video where someone drunkenly holds a mic and talks about something for 20 minutes to 5 hours a "video essay". I'm not trying to be disparaging either I just don't know what else really ties such a comically broad format together.

As much as I may have my disagreements with you guys at times, I am thankful this podcast has helped me with critically thinking more about media. To not just accept things as they are but to question the whys and hows. It’s helped me a lot when crafting my own stories and life. So to all those essayists out there; you want to know why efap has grown? The video where Literature Devil talks about Mary Sues in this example is: Why Rey is a Mary Sue and Luke Skywalker is Not.
The beginning part of the video where he talks about Sandman and Superman is only to highlight that while these people posses incredible traits, they aren't necessarily classified as Mary Sues. He goes further into it by stating what he defines is a Mary Sue:
A Character to which the universe and plot bend
    - Laws
    - People
    - Logic
    - Common Sense
Devil illustrates that the Universe and Plot do not bend to their needs in a story therefore they do not fit the mold of a mary sue. He goes through the examples of literature for what makes a character a character and what makes them a mary sue.
Devil never added any footage of Man of Steel, this guy did. He completely takes the "Farm Boy defeats Veteran" out of context.

Actually that’s one of the few things Rey does that I kind of like. She’s shown in the film tinkering and having built things. It’s not an illogical leap from her skill set.
The problem is that she can pilot a starship with ridiculous levels of skill, and even though she’s never left this one planet, she knows how to navigate through hyperspace. Han pointed out the difference between flying in atmosphere (dusting crops, he calls it) and navigating between star systems in ANH.
She’s an ace pilot with no framework for where she’s develop that skill. She’s a crack shot with no framework not evidence she’d ever held a gun. Han even corrects the way she’s holding a blaster earlier but later she’s an expert marksman. She has never even heard of the Force but is using Jedi mind control hours later. She’s never touched a lightsaber and is somehow winning a duel against someone trained for decades.
Her doing this one little repair on the Falcon is feasible compared to the impracticality of everything else. And that’s even a good acting moment for Daisy Ridley, who is thrilled and excited about finding this solution, and you can see how she’s showing off to Han desperate for his approval.

I'm sorry, but I need to debunk this guy's statement that Lily Orchard is original compared to his other examples. She's not. Lily modelled herself after Moviebob and Jim Sterling, and took many of their worst traits to the next level. You can see this in how she copies the tone of voice used in the video, the editing style, and how she loves to come up with creative ways to insult and de-humanize people who disagree with her. If you're a fan of TV Tropes, you might also notice that Lily uses a lot of phrases taken directly from that website in her scrips. Even many of her original fictions that she works on are not original, but amalgimations of World of Warcraft and Knights of the Old Republic tropes (with heavy emphasis on evil Sylvanas-type characters as the heroes). The funny thing is, for the most part he was on point with how terrible of a reviewer Lily is, and how she relies on hate and vitrial to get through. Yet his ability to analyze media is so much worse than her's that he managed to make her seem rational in comparison. Let that sink in. This guy made Lily Orchard, one of TH-cam's most vile and toxic individuals, seem reasonable.

Specifically regarding Steven Universe, she actually has a lot of valid criticisms about SU having an unprofessional flaky work ethic behind it and the story pussying out of condemning the actual villains to force some happy ending, which unintentionally throws under the bus the antihero who died so that Steven can live.
But even then, a lot of points in that video got flak from those like Robobuddies for being suspiciously similar to other videos on the topic (I watched the videos in question; they all got similar beats just presented differently; Lily made it her own with her delivery and add-on points, but yeah, "original" is not the word I would use)
Whole thing's just silly to me because of ALL the things he could've slammed her for, he went with "she was mean to Rebecca", Lily's single most based take. And even there the guy backpedals because she's a LGBT

That's what makes this whole situation so much funnier.
Despite Anthony Gramuglia's attempts to call out Lily Orchard for daring to criticize a show about gay rock aliens and an autistic boy with emotional problems, he still managed to come off worse than Lily because she at least sees through LGBT representation and can point out how badly Steven Universe handles all it's idea and should never be shown to a child.
She doesn't give it a pass because even she realizes that Steven Universe's idea of love is more creepy than it is charming, episcally when it comes to fusion.
It speaks volumes about how terrible a critic Anthony is when Lily is more objective when reviewing media than he is.

Also, I will not use Jerry Peet's "pReFeRrEd pRoNoUnS" for even more austere, objectivist, and moral reasons than I refuse to use Dylan Mulvaney's. Jerry was also discovered to be lecherous autogynophiliac, having written multiple pornographic stories centered around author avatar characters magically getting turned into women. So every time you refer to Jerry by incorrect pronouns or the drag name *he* made up for *himself,* you are playing into *his* degenerate sexual fetishes... and *he* knows it, and revels in it: that's just how much of a salacious, malignant, world-stage narcissist *he* is.

Her review of Steven Universe killed its reputation and pointed out many of the flaws that plagued it even after the show ended.
She was even a fan of the show, but even she found fusions to be creepy when they turned into metaphors for sex, and she even called out how every relationship in the show was borderline abusive.
To this day, fans have been coping with that video forever because it proves how awful Steven Universe is and has only gotten worse.

Remember folks, Lily has a total of 44mil views. Almost half of that comes from just two videos they made. In comparison to Eric July(since that’s the person he’s decided to use) whose total views are around 115mil and who’s viewing numbers are far more evenly spread out over their content.
So no, Lily isn’t a “better critic” because their video got more views. Lily made two videos on very popular and very “talked about” at the time series that got picked up by the algorithm. The VAST majority of those people who clicked on those two videos then had no further interest in anything else Lily made or had to say about other media or topics. They didn’t watch for Lily’s “brilliant criticism” they clicked on the video because of the video’s topic.

If Ant thought things through a bit more, he'd realize the reason companies like Disney and tell little white lies about viewership numbers and will renew terrible shows is because not doing so makes them look bad. Anthony: Media Critics are Lying to you
Also Anthony: *proceeds to lie about both media, critics and criticism
The entire video, Anthony miscontrues or misrepresents the arguments mad by most of the critics he "covers", in order to prop up his own points. Whilst also doing the same thing to the scenes they're talking about.
Like based on how he presents the clips (if you wanna call it that and not randomly scattering), of course someone with ZERO CONTEXT, wouldn't be able to rebut him. But if you watch more of Literature Devil, JAR or Mauler or a lot of the other people mentioned, you would see that Anthony is BLATANTLY lying about the points they're making or is taking out context to make him seem more "reasonable" by comparison.
Here's the thing I hate about people like Anthony, Diregentlemen and Cosmonaught, just to name a few. It is not that they disagree with me, or enjoy something I don't or vice versa, its that they misrepresent both the piece of media they're covering as well as the people who enjoy/hate that piece of media, and do so under the impression that they're "smart actually 🤓"

@@lancethefilmguy9392 precisely, Anthony constantly conflates his readings and opinions of media as the correct, objective and ONLY interpretation of said media. And he demonises and quite frankly, bullies others for thinking differently.
I remember a while ago when this was still a fresh event, I commented on another channel that Anthony was the line I drew in the sand for poor media criticism, to which he pompously responded "I'm happy to be that line in the sand", which says all I need to know about Anthony's argumentation and motivations.
He doesn't value storytelling in the way that most who enjoy it do, he sees it as a means to make a point, typically a social or political one. And furthermore, he sees critiquing media as a means to prove HIS point, to benefit HIMSELF. Otherwise why would he act so antagonist to those who disagree with him about media or politics? Why pull his punches about people like Lily Orchard or Aneta Sarkisian when they have the worst media takes of all the people he covers in his video? And why does he assume that those he disagrees with are "lying", instead of simply holding a different view based on other ways of thinking?
