For the record, I didn't MAKE AAA developers spend $200 million on a game. There's absolutely ZERO reason why AAA couldn't be making 20 million dollar games. That is NOT my problem. AAA games seem to be operating like governments with bloated budgets buying $2000 toilet seats.
Take this with a grain of salt, but I think these ridiculous budgets probably have to do with appeasing shareholders. They have to show higher and higher profits on their balance sheets in order to keep the shareholders coming. Because of this they have to constantly nickel and dime customers in order to keep the money coming, which is why you get all these predatory micro transactions and dlcs and what not. These bloated budgets are apparently mostly about marketing and advertising.
Except the market buys fifa every year, buys COD every year, the market for playstation is entirely based on third person action games with full voice acting that is as much watching a full movie as it is gameplay in a massive world. there is literally nothing preventing you from buying indie games, which they just refuse to acknowledge in the entire video, they just say "oh 0.00001% of indie games are successful so clearly you dont need big budgets" ignoring how the rest of them dies. it should be especially obvious as its an argument they have made FOR MARVEL that the expectations of cgi are so high that they have a hard time backing down, the same for AAA games where everyone expects an 80 hour fully voiced campaign with thousands of voiced npcs and polish on everything.
@@zoulsgaming9455 Yeah, just like for every successful restaurant there were 3 or more that failed before it. It would be useful to distinguish categories of indie game. "Indie" as in one broke dude's tortured genius passion project isn't the same as an "indie" developer with a handful of driven people who have experience/degrees in relevant fields and are essentially a professional outfit on a small scale.
The reason why old games were more expensive and justifiably so is really easy to explain. 1: Inflation and wages have not kept pace. You are about 40% poorer than your great grandfather working in a factory. 2: The first game cartridges were ground breaking in house produced technology that was heavily invested in by the manufacturers. They wrote the software, they designed the chip boards, the whole concept of inputting data was new. All of that was done in house. 3: Storage device production costs are way way way lower these days. There is no shipping costs, no retail costs, literally just the production of the software. 4: Most of game development is automated and 3rd party software is the norm. In short the fact games are STILL $60 despite all the advances in technology is just corporate price gouging. They should be closer to $30.

In this age of near-constant Steam sales and brilliant indie productions that go for $10-20 at launch, there is little incentive to drop $70 or more on a single game. The last game I paid more than $50 for was Elden Ring, which I now have 500+ hours in. People today just have the luxury of being far more discerning with their money, and putting an overly-high price point on your game just gives it a sour first impression.
As a bit of a counter to Dev's point about how nice the guy making the games was to him and his explanation for why those monetization practices are necessary, I once went out for dinner with a developer who worked on Battlefront 2. It was informal, and you'd be shocked at how he described the monetization in the game. He actually told me that he thought that gamers were stupid and would gladly keep spending money in the game just to unlock their favorite Star Wars character. There wasn't a big speech about how necessary it was to make that game the way it was due to the harsh realities of the industry in an age of social media, he was openly, and proudly, saying "I just want to make a lot of money, and anyone who gives my company that money is stupid."

It's an incredibly well designed, influential and fun game. However, some people who play it today REALLY hate how floaty Samus feels in it. For people who like metroidvanias, that's the absolute entirety of their complaints about it. As someone who studied economics, it is sometimes painful to listen people talk about it having clearly no idea of what they are saying. Mixing up basic concepts, switching cause and effect, ignoring data, bringing up unrelated stuff... To compare past and current prices in any meaningful way, one should spend at least two nights (😜) just doing some cost analysis, breaking down how the production process works now and back then. Inflation can be part of the deal, but there is so much to consider: changes in logistic, spreading processes costs on multiple projects (e.g. engines), potential economies of scale (for big studios), breakeven points, changes in wages, alternative sources of income, price elasticity... to name a few. I would need a 10 min video just to explain the literal meaning of what I just listed... 😅

Dev missed one key aspect of the "games take the same amount out of your paycheck", if you think about the paycheck as a whole, yes, however, out of people's disposable income, after the essentials have been taken out, games take a much higher chunk of the entertainment budget. Comparing to people's raw earnings is what allows the dishonest arguments to appear to have some form of standing. Would like to see a deeper dive into how "keeping the same price" still results into a feeling of being more expensive when people are getting squeezed for more money on all fronts.
Yup. And the first things to go are “entertainment” items. It’s (part of) why hollywood, AAA video games, streaming services, and theme parks are struggling right now. If I can’t afford to eat or pay rent, I can’t afford to subscribe to Disney+ or buy a $100 video game.
@@e.c.winner7252 Subscribing to D+, or most of the streaming services out there, is barely worth paying for if you have plenty of money. You pay monthly for what, 2 or 3 decent pieces of exclusive content? I don't know why anyone bothers with them anymore at all. Same goes for AAA games, or even consoles that rely on a few exclusive games to sell. It seems like people who justify increased price can get bogged down in proving that no, you CAN afford them, when even if that's the case, it doesn't justify a sale. I could win the lottery tomorrow, it's not going to make me buy Redfall, Starfield or S#ide Squad because even if I don't value my money, I still value my time.
Also the averages tend to be total nonsense as they're often too focused on things like full time work, don't account for the huge amount of students or people out of work, and tend to be too high in general because of the massive pay rises seen in the top 0.1% that haven't touched the bottom third.

All that being said, I doubt Rag was saying the practice stopped and was referring to his experience on console as being "back then".
Dude going digital doesn’t just “reduce” the cost of distribution games. It practically eliminates them. As a publisher steam for example takes 30% and you never pay to produce a single copy. You print new games for free 😗
You still have to pay for the hardware and software to program the games in your workspace. You also have to pay for the employment of staff who are programming the game.
@@otterfire4712Distribution and actual physical production were major budgetary items when publishing a game in the past. Hell, timing production and getting everything into place prior to launch was a huge logistical issue. Literally all of that is gone now.
Distributing digital downloads still has a significant cost if you are doing it at large scales like Steam or GoG or any other store. It's not anywhere near the level of physical distribution but it's not cheap nor "eliminated". Steam still has to pay for servers/bandwith and content delivery services worldwide
The way Dev has to say “I know this is a bad take so you can eviscerate me if you want” or similar such things before making his bad take just shows how much of a lolcow he is. That is essentially him begging for it to happen.
1. He never seems to bring up the fact that the sheer number of game developers, and therefore, games have increased dramatically compared to the early days of gaming. More competition among publishers and developers means lower prices for costumers. Also we should not forget the competition with social media. 2. since video games are considered a luxury and not a necessity, the increase in inflation hits the expected sale pf video games more than it would something like foods. So publishers know they can't increase the prices as much as they would want. (In economics they call this elasticity, meaning whether or not a raise in the product's price will result in more revenue) 3. The question of cost is irrelavant in a competetive market. Whether or not a game cost millions or not is not a concern of the costumers that are gonna decide if they want to spend their money on the game. People want quality and don't care about the production cost or time.
What surprised me the most from both the video and EFAP, is the omission of free games. The very idea of a free videogame did not even exist until the internet, maybe an arcade somewhere let you play for free. Free games on console only happened wth the rise of console storefronts and the ability download games. Free games have to be a part of the equation, and they drastically cheapen the price of the average game.
@@AfutureV Extra did not to my knowledge ever talk about the "average" price of games. He only talked about the "common" price of video games which is currently 70 and was 60 until 2020, but I may be wrong. Which if he had stated a few statistics, there wouldn't be this potential misunderstanding
I think this also completely ignores that games have divvied up their cost into barely obscured installment payments. The main game is just the first payment to access a low-feature beta with many modern games. There are several payments to come with season passes or semiannual or even more frequent DLC. For an example of a game from the 2000s, Total War Medieval 2 with all its DLC is 2 things. The game itself and the Kingdoms expansion. If we look at that same company's current flagship series, they are still charging roughly the same cost for each main game, and one of the large DLCs are roughly the cost of the kingdoms expansion. They are currently on their third Warhammer total war game, which is essentially an old school expansion pack but added into a super campaign across the games as well as a separate campaign for the release. Most people play this for the main campaign specifically, and it is the main selling point. To put that plainly, if you want the full game, you need to pay for every previous game and most of the various 5-20 USD pieces of DLC for the entire warhammer series. Even if we try to isolate these prices to each individual game. The first of the series is about 130 USD, the second was 170 USD, and the third is still in progress, but the current tally for third game specific prices is 160 USD.
3) It also _shouldn't_ be the customers' concern. It's the whole "tip" culture mentality. If people need tips to make a fair wage, it's not my fault you signed up for that job, nor is it my job to run your business in a way that works for employees. How you allocate your money isn't my responsibility, I didn't sign up for it. Not to mention that games are the biggest entertainment medium on the planet. If you somehow can't make it profitable, that's on you. Although we all know they do, they'll boast about record profits (even accounting for inflation) and then whine it's too expensive, or they don't make "enough" and layoff because its all going to execs. Or that it's "risky" and "costs too much/takes too long" as if they HAVE to make ONLY $100M+ budget, 5 year AAA games or live services. As if they couldn't diversify their portfolio with smaller (likely still AAA) games to make modest profits in the interim. They have no place to complain when they try no other alternatives.

If he played it after hearing everyone talk about it being the best game ever made, and he just thought it was okay, that’s going to be an issue, too.
Not really. Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are extremely different games, so it's no surprise for someone to enjoy one but not the other. Sure, they have similar structure, progression, and world design and the like, but the core gameplay stuff isn't even remotely similar. Super Metroid is a speedy and acrobatic platformer about movement above all else, while Metroid Prime is quite slow, low on platforming, and leans into combat much more. A faithful adaption of Super Metroid's gameplay to FPS would almost certainly have movement in the vein of games like Ultrakill, Titanfall 2, Neon White, Enchain, Ghostrunner, and so on, with high running speed, wall running and jumping, grappling, air dashing, etc.
@@321cheeseman Another thing is that Super Metroid almost demands replays in order to truly appreciate it because its not strictly linear and knowledge of tricks or even just basic stuff from a first playthrough can radically change how you play. Prime is strictly linear outside of 2 moments where you can go to get 1 item or another, and in both cases you need both items to progress past either one anyways, so the decision is pointless. I don't really count extreme glitches, as unlike Super's, Prime's are very difficult and unnatural feeling, not to mention they are mostly removed in a lot of versions. Then the Artifact hunt is the only one that can be done comepletely out of order, only because its mostly left at the very end of the game after all other items have been grabbed. Super Metroid just has so much going for it that you might not realize without more experience with it, but Prime can be fully experienced in its first playthrough. It's unfortunate, but that isn't a slight on Prime which is still a top tier game, just an emphasis on why Super is so important even after all these years, and why Dev likely doesn't have any appreciation for it.

I remember buying a new copy of the Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii for $20 at Target, not knowing anything about Metroid. Not only was it 3 40-60 hr graphically updated games, redesigned to have one of the best control systems in the platform, on a physical disc, it came in a steel book with a huge full color manual.
One of the best EFAP conversations I’ve heard. Their tangents were much more interesting than the video. The video at the end was hilarious, a nice pallet cleanser.
Ironically, in the modern day, the Kinect actually has found a niche and a consistent use case: as a device to give VR setups full body tracking solutions. And it's pretty damn good at it, too.
4:24:30 The thing is Rags, it doesn't matter if i buy it or not. Most of us don't -- that's what the "10% of players generate 80% of sales" means. I can only not buy the game once. But a whale spending $240 on mtx bought the game 5 times over! We can't beat that.

And TOTK was the obviously them stepping over the line as now every new game got $70 regardless of the fact they sre much smaller in scope than TOTK was.

Every year the market for games is the biggest it has ever been. Imagine telling developers in '99 that a game selling 3 million copies could be seen as a failure.
Another reason game prices varied so much back in the day is because the boards in the cartridges could have added ram and other components that would jack up the price. It’s why games like FF VI and Chrono Trigger were upwards of $100 bucks on release.
Yeah, when Nintendo wasn't sure about the US market with the NES they pulled the battery-powered RAM chips out of them and just had you type in game code to make the save file that would have been on the chip in Japan.
In the US and Canada houses are on average 75% larger than they were in the 1950s. I tell people all the time you can buy a house for the same money your parents paid, and that house will look like this: No air conditioning 60% of the size Poorly insulated compared to a modern house Fewer rooms Split rail fencing Worse foundation materials Plaster and Lathe walls Etc etc. Same ia true of cars. If you want a new car for 6 grand like your dad bought new, great, itll have an unfinished dash, the suspension of an ox cart, and 0 safety features Inflation is a very real thing, but we take for a given what a house or car, or medicines look like now and compare them directly to what previous generations had when at this point they are fundamentally different things
@@Grassroots_Hegemon I live in former SU country but haven't old houses skyrocketed in prices as well? Also houses built recently are rising in price as well even outpacing the inflation while.they suffer in quality tremendously. Land prices are also rising and rising. Prices in my city rize because we have regular high inflation about 15%-20%), many people come from Russia, Ukraine and Central Asian countries to it as well as recent law that allowed people to use their pension money to "improve the place of living" heating the market. If I missed anything please inform me but your take that things should cost more doesn't seem to account for the fact that people pay bigger part of their salary, production has become more efficient and cheap and wages in the West (and most of the world) stagnated for about 40 years while inflation really didn't
@@raufm.2135 What supports the value of the house is the land which is accruing value not the house itself necessarily so housing tends to always grow in value, but my point is that the things that we used to call a house, are the size of what we would now call a double wide, and the size of the average house has doubled. So you really arent buying the same house, because what we consider a house has shifted massively over time. Another consideration is its not legal to build houses the way you used to, so some of those updates are required, and at least in the states, its pretty common to buy an old house that was actually several families houses with a common stairwell, and that would be a modest firat time buyers house, when previously 6 or 7 people had all lived at that one place with 2 addresses.
@@Grassroots_Hegemon The problem is like-for-like comparison of features also doesn't factor in other critical points like the location of a house or where that house falls inside a theoretical contemporary list of all available houses. A house purchased today might be (let's say) 25% larger than its 'equivalent' fifty years ago, but that house will likely be positioned far lower in the 'league table' of available houses, when compared with the size of the highest value and/or largest houses available to the richest people today. Location is a huge variable too, causing small and previously low-value housing to become extremely valuable. If you bought a one bedroom apartment in central London back in 1980 for a few thousand £££, your return on investment will far outstrip inflation, with your home now valued in multiple millions. Meanwhile, a large house in the UK countryside which cost far more than the London flat in 1980 willl have appreciated in value at a far slower rate. I think it would be easier and fairer to compare function rather than features. I.e. "I need a home that can accommodate a family of four, located within a reasonable commuting distance to my London workplace - how many years worth of average London salary will this cost, in 1970 and (for comparison) 2020?" In 1970 the answer to that question was approximately one year's salary. In 2020 it is 10-15 years salary. That's the real problem.
@@Grassroots_Hegemon Most of the audience's parents weren't even alive in the '50s.... How *old* are you bruh? Comparing the housing market of the '80s to now is FAR more apt.
Also, "profit margins". Like with Disney, where 300 million budgets are outperformed by Godzilla Minus One? And the film bombs, so no profit and no tax, cause there was no revenue generated. However SOMEONE gets 300 million, and the (hopefully) 300 coming in is NOT TAXED since the original product "cost" so much? So effectively the "entity" that made the product earned 300 mil UNTAXED. We talking these margins?
that's not how taxes work. All worker wages are taxed regardless (and that's a big expense in those 300M), and all items and services purchased and expended during production are expended so taxed or not that's still money gone.

Playing Devil's Advocate is important, especially when the videos usually have poor or hollow arguments (or none and just assert). I'm more annoyed that he'll start sidetracking too long and maling it about himself. Sure, everyone should get a minute to speak, but don't make yourself the focus of the discussion. I think at one point Mauler or Rags said "we should get back to the video" because it ead like a 10min tangent and tehy werent thst far into the video. He does this on every podcast appearance I've seen. Explanations can be good but every intro has him go on and on when it's not necessary (yet or at all) or could be summarized better. It’s so weird listening to the history of gaming section like it’s so long ago and I’m just here like I was already out of school by then and I remember all of it like it was only a few years ago.
The simplest way to prove that Extra Credits is BS is look at how large the market for video games are compared to how big it was. If they were bleeding money, as he suggests, then how did all these gaming companies become giants in an industry that now dwarfs movies and Hollywood?
It isn't quite that simple. The vast majority of movie-surpassing growth in the video game industry is because of the mobile market, which has monetization that puts what AAA games do to shame.

For the record, I didn't MAKE AAA developers spend $200 million on a game. There's absolutely ZERO reason why AAA couldn't be making 20 million dollar games. That is NOT my problem. AAA games seem to be operating like governments with bloated budgets buying $2000 toilet seats.
And blaming the customers (taxpayers) for the waste!
Same for Hollywood.
No one forced Disney to spend $300 million on Indians Jones: Diaper of Disentary. But they did for some reason

Yeah, nowadays the storage hardware is bulk-purchased DVDs and digital files.
And we already pay internet providers for the service of downloads

@@inquisitionagent9052THIS is 100% true.
(In economics they call this elasticity, meaning whether or not a raise in the product's price will result in more revenue)
They have no place to complain when they try no other alternatives.

who has known the mind of Dev, and who has been his counselor
Yes and no. Functionally, it’s Super Metroid? But it’s done from a First Person PoV and _is_ in 3D, which means the game is going to feel different on some level. For some people, like Dev, they like the 3D one more, for whatever reason. Conversely, for others, they prefer the 2D one and feel like the newer one just doesn’t measure up.
There’s also something to be said about the hype? If he played it after hearing everyone talk about it being the best game ever made, and he just thought it was okay, that’s going to be an issue, too.
@@Adorni Yes, its an issue that he thought it was just okay. I completely agree.

I can only not buy the game once. But a whale spending $240 on mtx bought the game 5 times over!
We can't beat that.

Consoles struggling with backwards compatibility, meanwhile PCs still able to run games from the late 90s:
PCs crash, freeze and brick all the time though...
@@trashfire9641 Uh, no.
@spectral_force5097 Uh, yeah. It's like, what comes to mind for the majority of people when PC is brought up. It's a very small minority of people that worship PC as the pinnacle of anything.
@@trashfire9641Those people probably only ever worked with outdated laptops from a decade ago, filled with manufacturer bloatware and trying to run software, or God forbid games, that are too intensive for the hardware.
A decent PC, preferably custom-built or even a prebuilt with decent specs (read: not soccer mom office-grade monoblock crap), will not crash or freeze, let alone brick. If your PC bricks then chances are it's PEBKAC. It's the consoles that have a reputation for bricking when you bump them.

CSGo knives being hyper expensive digital code is literally a reason NFTs happened, hell they are only slightly above NFTs because you can use them in a game
@Sterlingarcher365 I mean those at least have actual value, life long tickets are a massive value vs "the rainbow colored butterfly knife is 400$ despite the fact it functions the same as the stock knife"
I honestly hate the people who say Zelda TOTK was worth $70 for what was almost an asset flip of BOTW, which didn't cost us $70. They are allowing nintedo to dip their toe into the waters of greed just because they enjoyed TOTK. now if I personally had to put a price point on TOTK its at most $50, it is jot worth as much as a the game it uses most of the assests, world, physics, and engine of.

Dev totally lost me with the "...because houses are generally bigger now" line.
He really needs to visit the UK.
In the US and Canada houses are on average 75% larger than they were in the 1950s.
I tell people all the time you can buy a house for the same money your parents paid, and that house will look like this:
No air conditioning
60% of the size
Poorly insulated compared to a modern house
Fewer rooms
Split rail fencing
Worse foundation materials
Plaster and Lathe walls
Etc etc. Same ia true of cars. If you want a new car for 6 grand like your dad bought new, great, itll have an unfinished dash, the suspension of an ox cart, and 0 safety features
Inflation is a very real thing, but we take for a given what a house or car, or medicines look like now and compare them directly to what previous generations had when at this point they are fundamentally different things
I.e. "I need a home that can accommodate a family of four, located within a reasonable commuting distance to my London workplace - how many years worth of average London salary will this cost, in 1970 and (for comparison) 2020?"
In 1970 the answer to that question was approximately one year's salary. In 2020 it is 10-15 years salary. That's the real problem.
@@Grassroots_Hegemon Most of the audience's parents weren't even alive in the '50s.... How *old* are you bruh? Comparing the housing market of the '80s to now is FAR more apt.
Dev must of got Wing’s mail by mistake…
I was waiting for a "Don't dead open inside." Joke as soon as I saw the pill and was not disappointed.

The legacy of this Extra Credits video is the EFAP discussion on games
I feel guilty that my favourite parts of efap are always unrelated to mainstream media coverage. You guys laughing at some decade gone avgn clone attempt is the most laughs I've gotten since the boogie doc coverage.

Fence-sitter Dev strikes again :-P
He always tries the same argument i.e Side Scrollers podcast where in com section I've used same and few more arguments why they actually should be cheaper not more expensive and even explained why they're so expensive to begin with...And always end up being oblitered by hosts, guest, chat and comment section :v
We don't need the inside baseball from the start. Like (Sitch &) Adam says, "Let's get to the video already!!"
@@mrshmuga9he doesn't play devil's advocate, he plays devil's idiot.
Dev plays devil's idiot, not advocate.
@@mrshmuga9He's also almost always basing his tangents on information that's incorrect but just obscure or specific enough that no one can call him on it right out of the gate. Like the CAD and USD being "on par" in the 90's.

For those that say "at least Extra Credits is good at their history videos", I've heard in a few videos debunking them that they delete comments saying that they didn't cite something or that they got something wrong.
The question is how much of that is EC and how much is TH-cam. YT have been censoring things a lot lately. It is noticeable it is election year in the US.
I understand dumb devs thinking it's normal to ask for such stupid prices and add so much DLC when your neighbor "mobile gaming" have casinos upon casinos shops in a single game, asking you to pay between 10.000 to 50.000dollars just to unlock the full content of it.
