Take this with a grain of salt, but I think these ridiculous budgets probably have to do with appeasing shareholders. They have to show higher and higher profits on their balance sheets in order to keep the shareholders coming. Because of this they have to constantly nickel and dime customers in order to keep the money coming, which is why you get all these predatory micro transactions and dlcs and what not. These bloated budgets are apparently mostly about marketing and advertising.

Except the market buys fifa every year, buys COD every year, the market for playstation is entirely based on third person action games with full voice acting that is as much watching a full movie as it is gameplay in a massive world.
there is literally nothing preventing you from buying indie games, which they just refuse to acknowledge in the entire video, they just say "oh 0.00001% of indie games are successful so clearly you dont need big budgets" ignoring how the rest of them dies.
it should be especially obvious as its an argument they have made FOR MARVEL that the expectations of cgi are so high that they have a hard time backing down, the same for AAA games where everyone expects an 80 hour fully voiced campaign with thousands of voiced npcs and polish on everything.

The reason why old games were more expensive and justifiably so is really easy to explain.
1: Inflation and wages have not kept pace. You are about 40% poorer than your great grandfather working in a factory.
2: The first game cartridges were ground breaking in house produced technology that was heavily invested in by the manufacturers. They wrote the software, they designed the chip boards, the whole concept of inputting data was new. All of that was done in house.
3: Storage device production costs are way way way lower these days. There is no shipping costs, no retail costs, literally just the production of the software.
4: Most of game development is automated and 3rd party software is the norm.
In short the fact games are STILL $60 despite all the advances in technology is just corporate price gouging. They should be closer to $30.

    1. He never seems to bring up the fact that the sheer number of game developers, and therefore, games have increased dramatically compared to the early days of gaming. More competition among publishers and developers means lower prices for costumers. Also we should not forget the competition with social media.
    2. since video games are considered a luxury and not a necessity, the increase in inflation hits the expected sale pf video games more than it would something like foods. So publishers know they can't increase the prices as much as they would want. (In economics they call this elasticity, meaning whether or not a raise in the product's price will result in more revenue)
    3. The question of cost is irrelavant in a competetive market. Whether or not a game cost millions or not is not a concern of the costumers that are gonna decide if they want to spend their money on the game. People want quality and don't care about the production cost or time.

I think this also completely ignores that games have divvied up their cost into barely obscured installment payments. The main game is just the first payment to access a low-feature beta with many modern games. There are several payments to come with season passes or semiannual or even more frequent DLC.
For an example of a game from the 2000s, Total War Medieval 2 with all its DLC is 2 things. The game itself and the Kingdoms expansion.
If we look at that same company's current flagship series, they are still charging roughly the same cost for each main game, and one of the large DLCs are roughly the cost of the kingdoms expansion.
They are currently on their third Warhammer total war game, which is essentially an old school expansion pack but added into a super campaign across the games as well as a separate campaign for the release. Most people play this for the main campaign specifically, and it is the main selling point.
To put that plainly, if you want the full game, you need to pay for every previous game and most of the various 5-20 USD pieces of DLC for the entire warhammer series. Even if we try to isolate these prices to each individual game. The first of the series is about 130 USD, the second was 170 USD, and the third is still in progress, but the current tally for third game specific prices is 160 USD.

If people need tips to make a fair wage, it's not my fault you signed up for that job, nor is it my job to run your business in a way that works for employees. How you allocate your money isn't my responsibility, I didn't sign up for it.
Not to mention that games are the biggest entertainment medium on the planet. If you somehow can't make it profitable, that's on you. Although we all know they do, they'll boast about record profits (even accounting for inflation) and then whine it's too expensive, or they don't make "enough" and layoff because its all going to execs. Or that it's "risky" and "costs too much/takes too long" as if they HAVE to make ONLY $100M+ budget, 5 year AAA games or live services. As if they couldn't diversify their portfolio with smaller (likely still AAA) games to make modest profits in the interim. They have no place to complain when they try no other alternatives.

Not really. Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are extremely different games, so it's no surprise for someone to enjoy one but not the other. Sure, they have similar structure, progression, and world design and the like, but the core gameplay stuff isn't even remotely similar. Super Metroid is a speedy and acrobatic platformer about movement above all else, while Metroid Prime is quite slow, low on platforming, and leans into combat much more.
A faithful adaption of Super Metroid's gameplay to FPS would almost certainly have movement in the vein of games like Ultrakill, Titanfall 2, Neon White, Enchain, Ghostrunner, and so on, with high running speed, wall running and jumping, grappling, air dashing, etc.

    • @GBDupree

@@321cheeseman Another thing is that Super Metroid almost demands replays in order to truly appreciate it because its not strictly linear and knowledge of tricks or even just basic stuff from a first playthrough can radically change how you play.
Prime is strictly linear outside of 2 moments where you can go to get 1 item or another, and in both cases you need both items to progress past either one anyways, so the decision is pointless. I don't really count extreme glitches, as unlike Super's, Prime's are very difficult and unnatural feeling, not to mention they are mostly removed in a lot of versions.
Then the Artifact hunt is the only one that can be done comepletely out of order, only because its mostly left at the very end of the game after all other items have been grabbed.
Super Metroid just has so much going for it that you might not realize without more experience with it, but Prime can be fully experienced in its first playthrough. It's unfortunate, but that isn't a slight on Prime which is still a top tier game, just an emphasis on why Super is so important even after all these years, and why Dev likely doesn't have any appreciation for it.

They are allowing nintedo to dip their toe into the waters of greed just because they enjoyed TOTK. now if I personally had to put a price point on TOTK its at most $50, it is jot worth as much as a the game it uses most of the assests, world, physics, and engine of. And TOTK was the obviously them stepping over the line as now every new game got $70 regardless of the fact they sre much smaller in scope than TOTK was.

In the US and Canada houses are on average 75% larger than they were in the 1950s.
I tell people all the time you can buy a house for the same money your parents paid, and that house will look like this:
      No air conditioning
      60% of the size
Poorly insulated compared to a modern house
      Fewer rooms
      Split rail fencing
      Worse foundation materials
      Plaster and Lathe walls
Etc etc. Same ia true of cars. If you want a new car for 6 grand like your dad bought new, great, itll have an unfinished dash, the suspension of an ox cart, and 0 safety features
Inflation is a very real thing, but we take for a given what a house or car, or medicines look like now and compare them directly to what previous generations had when at this point they are fundamentally different things

@@Grassroots_Hegemon I live in former SU country but haven't old houses skyrocketed in prices as well? Also houses built recently are rising in price as well even outpacing the inflation while.they suffer in quality tremendously. Land prices are also rising and rising.
Prices in my city rize because we have regular high inflation about 15%-20%), many people come from Russia, Ukraine and Central Asian countries to it as well as recent law that allowed people to use their pension money to "improve the place of living" heating the market.
If I missed anything please inform me but your take that things should cost more doesn't seem to account for the fact that people pay bigger part of their salary, production has become more efficient and cheap and wages in the West (and most of the world) stagnated for about 40 years while inflation really didn't

    • @Grassroots_Hegemon
      @Grassroots_Hegemon 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@raufm.2135 What supports the value of the house is the land which is accruing value not the house itself necessarily so housing tends to always grow in value, but my point is that the things that we used to call a house, are the size of what we would now call a double wide, and the size of the average house has doubled. So you really arent buying the same house, because what we consider a house has shifted massively over time. Another consideration is its not legal to build houses the way you used to, so some of those updates are required, and at least in the states, its pretty common to buy an old house that was actually several families houses with a common stairwell, and that would be a modest firat time buyers house, when previously 6 or 7 people had all lived at that one place with 2 addresses.

    • @casbyness
      @casbyness 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Grassroots_Hegemon The problem is like-for-like comparison of features also doesn't factor in other critical points like the location of a house or where that house falls inside a theoretical contemporary list of all available houses. A house purchased today might be (let's say) 25% larger than its 'equivalent' fifty years ago, but that house will likely be positioned far lower in the 'league table' of available houses, when compared with the size of the highest value and/or largest houses available to the richest people today. Location is a huge variable too, causing small and previously low-value housing to become extremely valuable. If you bought a one bedroom apartment in central London back in 1980 for a few thousand £££, your return on investment will far outstrip inflation, with your home now valued in multiple millions. Meanwhile, a large house in the UK countryside which cost far more than the London flat in 1980 willl have appreciated in value at a far slower rate.
I think it would be easier and fairer to compare function rather than features. I.e. "I need a home that can accommodate a family of four, located within a reasonable commuting distance to my London workplace - how many years worth of average London salary will this cost, in 1970 and (for comparison) 2020?"
In 1970 the answer to that question was approximately one year's salary. In 2020 it is 10-15 years salary. That's the real problem.

Also, "profit margins". Like with Disney, where 300 million budgets are outperformed by Godzilla Minus One? And the film bombs, so no profit and no tax, cause there was no revenue generated. However SOMEONE gets 300 million, and the (hopefully) 300 coming in is NOT TAXED since the original product "cost" so much? So effectively the "entity" that made the product earned 300 mil UNTAXED.
    We talking these margins?

I'm more annoyed that he'll start sidetracking too long and maling it about himself. Sure, everyone should get a minute to speak, but don't make yourself the focus of the discussion. I think at one point Mauler or Rags said "we should get back to the video" because it ead like a 10min tangent and tehy werent thst far into the video. He does this on every podcast appearance I've seen. Explanations can be good but every intro has him go on and on when it's not necessary (yet or at all) or could be summarized better. We don't need the inside baseball from the start. Like (Sitch &) Adam says, "Let's get to the video already!!"

The simplest way to prove that Extra Credits is BS is look at how large the market for video games are compared to how big it was. If they were bleeding money, as he suggests, then how did all these gaming companies become giants in an industry that now dwarfs movies and Hollywood?

    • @321cheeseman
