  • Welcome to How to Knots! 🌟 In today's tutorial, we'll be demonstrating how to tie the scaffold knot, also known as the gallows knot. This knot is incredibly useful for a variety of applications, including lifting, rigging, fishing, and camping.
The scaffold knot is a reliable and secure knot that forms a fixed loop, which tightens under load. This makes it ideal for situations where you need a strong and adjustable loop that won't slip or come undone. Whether you're an angler needing to attach hooks or a camper setting up gear, this knot is a must-have in your knot-tying repertoire.
In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through the process of tying the scaffold knot, ensuring that you understand each part of the knot and how to use it effectively.

It's a good demo on how to tie it. It would be nice to learn where this knot performs better than other adjustable loop knots.

how tough is it to untie after it's been loaded? I assume it's hard, but not as bad as slip knots and some hitches/constrictors. I don't have my practice rope w/me to try it myself

I guess you could probably do a quick release by passing a bight vs the entire tag end, but I worry it might compromise this knot a lil?

Your comment got me thinking and so I tested the knot around an anchor point with everything I had in my body pulling, and even at my full force the knot was easily adjustable under tension, and it unties alright. like you mentioned it's somewhat difficult to untie but not impossible. The stronger you tighten the initial knot before tension the harder it is to untie, but you don't want to tie it to loose and compromise the knot. A sort of middle ground you have to experiment to find. I found that a bight actually made the knot harder to untie after tension because the end of the bight tends to get stuck under the loops where as a single strand can slip through easier.
