    What you have tied is a crown knot which is made with two anticlockwise half hitches you can also make another overhand knot using two clockwise half hitches which is called a wall knot .Ashley did not fully understand this fact as one can see by looking at his book.

    Just a heads up... the knot you tied for #3 wasn't the Clove Hitch.... that was the Constrictor Knot. It holds very tightly and, depending on how much force is applied, usually has to be cut off because it cannot be untied. The Clove Hitch does not go "over the main line and underneath the X". To finish off the Clove Hitch you would just take your working end of the rope back over the pole and underneath the top line of the X (but parallel to the bottom of the X). Both ends (working end and standing end) should come out from the center of the X on opposite sides when complete. The Clove Hitch will hold under tension yet is easy to untie when slack is introduced. Other than that, great job! 👍👍

    how tough is it to untie after it's been loaded? I assume it's hard, but not as bad as slip knots and some hitches/constrictors. I don't have my practice rope w/me to try it myself

    • @kernelsmith
      @kernelsmith หลายเดือนก่อน

      I guess you could probably do a quick release by passing a bight vs the entire tag end, but I worry it might compromise this knot a lil?

    • @How2Knots
      @How2Knots หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your comment got me thinking and so I tested the knot around an anchor point with everything I had in my body pulling, and even at my full force the knot was easily adjustable under tension, and it unties alright. like you mentioned it's somewhat difficult to untie but not impossible. The stronger you tighten the initial knot before tension the harder it is to untie, but you don't want to tie it to loose and compromise the knot. A sort of middle ground you have to experiment to find. I found that a bight actually made the knot harder to untie after tension because the end of the bight tends to get stuck under the loops where as a single strand can slip through easier.

    • @How2Knots
      @How2Knots หลายเดือนก่อน

      They both serve the same function, and my opinion is that it just comes down to preference. But I have tested and pulled tension from all directions and there is no sign of anything wrong. The Alpine Butterfly may have a slight advantage of not tightening as much when tension is put on the loop, or an easier untie you could call it. I may create a video comparing the two knots under tension to examine the differences!

    • @kernelsmith
      @kernelsmith หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was going to ask the same question. It also reminds me of the Prusik (IIRC) hitch, except that is a) a hitch and b) a separate piece of line. But remembering that lets me remember this one w/o much effort. I’d be interested to see the results if u did a comparison, cuz the alpine is a PITA to untie after loading. Admittedly, it probably won’t be a popular video with the masses
