@ModernBuilds Will the epoxy pour work on counters that, first of all, I can't get fully clean, and second, that are porous? Hence the can't get fully clean problem..
Awesome book that gives you step-by-step photos th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt and directions to make every day project. I can see myself making a few of these projects and giving them as housewarming and holiday gifts!
You need to prime the MDF before applying the epoxy. That’s standard procedure. Regardless of what the substrate it you need to prime. Total boat is a great brand. I’m glad you show how fails happen. I’ve watched hundreds of videos using many different brands. Looked at hundreds of reviews on brands. I’m doing my countertops in my kitchen but not until early summer. Good results looks great
Do you have a recommendation on what primer to paint the counters with beforehand?? I noticed the superglaze from varathane was more yellow before it cured, but it ended up curing to the same clear finish as the other total boat epoxy!
@@ModernBuilds works best if you put a slight round over at the finish edge (top and bottom) with a router then paint with latex (sand w/220 in between coats) let dry for 24 hours. Also if you use tyvek tape (or something similar to packing tape on the bottom edge you can pull the tape and get rid of the drips. Taping the front edge (effectively damming the epoxy on top) and leave for 45 minutes (to where the epoxy is just starting to set up) - pull the painters tape and the epoxy will roll over the edge slower and give you better coverage on the front edge - Stonecoat Countertops has videos that explain this - the edges come out really nice
Love your attitude towards just going ahead, trying + making mistakes, but not hiding them for us. Not a mable-look-fan myself, but the countertops look very nice in the Airstream, Mike!
It's like my middle school (and junior high) art teacher used to tell us: "if you make a mistake, work with it"! Even 20-something years later, I still remind myself of that when I'm restoring an area and it doesn't QUITE come out like I had planned!
I don't know why Mike was so surprised how well they turned out for his first time doing them. Mike, in my opinion, is the quintessential definition of a "maker" - everything he does is hit and it is because he is passionate, thoughtful, and not afraid to fail. Mike has to be my favorite maker on TH-cam
Mike, if you ever want to do epoxy countertops again, hit me up. I do this for a living and would love to show you some different techniques that make the tops look more organic.
great video, like that you included mistakes in the video, so we learn from your mistakes. a year later now, how are the countertops holding up? any yellowing?
Hey Mike, was a cool project. But yeah priming is a must. You shouldnlook at stonecoatcountertops. They make tons of videos about this. Their epoxy seems great too. They usually tape the perimeter and do their designs using pigments and also rattle cans sprayed in the bucket (nice effect). They remove the tape after an hour or more and it flow thick on the sides, using his hand to break the surface tension if it doesnt flow everywhere on the sides. After 5h he scrape the botttom epoxy like you did. Its a slow epoxy so you have lot of time to work with.
awesome job, been waiting for this video since first mention that was the plan, as i wanted to do something similar my self for my brothers new little man cave gaming shed at the end of the garden, i didn't wait and went ahead anyway and used 40mm thick ( 2x20mm sheets glued together ) sheet of OSB cut to L shape made a groove 2 inch in from the back 10mm deep painted the groove white and laid a rgbic govee lighting strip into it filled this with loads of play dough my nephew abandoned at my house lol ( couldn't think of anything else to use ) and shaped it using a razor, i then laid down a flood coat light grey epoxy finished with sliver flicks through it, when dried removed the playdough as much as possible with fingers and cleaned up the edges of the groove with a Dremel and finally filled the groove with clear epoxy with a thin layer over the whole desk to get a smooth finish and so the lights can shine through, flipped it over and added some straight steel flat bar across the centre from side to side help stop sag from his several screens and finally added some white steel adjustable ikea table legs, easily pay up to a 1000 for something like that built for under 300 ( £ uk ) ... all that said what you've just done is how i want my kitchen side to look so off to order some epoxy haha ( fyi I'm building your sofa design for his man cave too lumber arriving Tomorrow )
the chill psychedelic tunes paired with heat gunning epoxy was so trippy!! you could make whole videos of just this for like an hour lol very meditative. awesome work mike!
I did my countertops with Stone Coat Countertopsmine and RK3 Designs. Watch many videos that took weeks to ensure I would get everything right. Please remember to mix up what you will use and do a sample piece first.
@Modern Builds Oh man I bet. I didn't know if you were going to just ride it out and fix it after the remodel of the house. Pumped you fixed it and it came out great!
The counter tops look great. You did a great job with the grey/black additions. How durable is this epoxy? Do you have to be extra careful when setting hot pots and pans on it? Will the hot Oklahoma sun coming in the windows have any effect on it?? Thanks for the video. It was another fun and informative one.
Depends on the brand of epoxy you use - I use Stonecoat and it is heat resistant up to 500*. The sunlight may will cause it to yellow that’s the reason I never do primarily white countertops
1-800-superpro tip. Put your epoxy in a sink full of warm water for a while before starting. Helps bring it up to temp and would solve the temp problem you had
Bro, I love the good the bad, owning it. I have been following Stonecoat Countertops forever now. You should check them out, might give you some awesome ideas for your next projects.
What was the total cost of the project? I just bought a house and can’t afford several thousand for new countertops but hate the brown formica. I’ve been binge watching your channel and a few others for ideas.🎉
Trick to try?: I saw @JonnyBuilds putting tape in the under edge, so drops stop there and don't get stuck in the wood? I Hope you can understand my english, cheers!

you should never do epoxy indoors with no ventilation. it's super toxic, so it needs to be well ventilated. you can severely damage your lungs, sometimes permanently. nothing worse than feeling like you're drowning from inside out
I was just talking to my husband about this same thing yesterday. We are going to do epoxy counter tops in our house we are building and I told him I either need to do them outside or it needs to be super ventilated because of any fumes and toxins.
I’ve watched hundreds of hours of profession “how to” videos from professional epoxy counter fabricators whose whole gig is to teach you how to DIY and sell you there epoxy line. Having watched all of that I felt “prepared.” Even then, there were still thing that never got covered and had to be figured out on the fly. There is no way this or any single 13 minute video can prepare someone to do an epoxy counter pour. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH FIRST!
So, so much nicer than the peel and stick. Well done!
Thanks a bunch, way better than the vinyl!

I like the epoxy tops. They look great.
Liking this so much more than the previous idea!
That looks so much better... turned out great!!

wow mike! this is magic! you're truly gifted at this process, such a beautiful marble design.
Success! I appreciate how you demonstrate your experiments
Thanks for watching!!! 😁
Very creative, they look great!
This is inspires me to really get into epoxy projects
No2 is the best effect I think
Great job young man!!!!!

Time to call the Stone Coat team to rate lol. Nice job.
Terrific job on that epoxy countertop pour Mike! It really turned out looking great! 👍👍👏👏
Wow!!! The counter tops look great!!! Good job - I’m gonna watch the video again!! Very cool!!
Thanks a ton!!! I'm glad they came out looking decent and it was a big learning experience!
So good! Well done.
Is epoxy durable for a counter top for a daily use in the kitchen?
P.S.: Peel and stick is always a waste for me (and for the planet).
The counter tops turned out awesome!
thanks!!
Beautiful work ✨🤌
Thanks!!!
Looks great
After trying both concrete overlay and epoxy countertops, what do you prefer? In terms of look, ease of maintenance and durability?

My man, quick clap back with the come back 👏🏼 😂
Had too.. That vinyl started to bubble and peel like crazy with the heat/cold in the trailer
@Modern Builds Oh man I bet. I didn't know if you were going to just ride it out and fix it after the remodel of the house. Pumped you fixed it and it came out great!
Great job, Mike. Those turned out great!
I'm pumped with how they came out too!! I appreciate it Kris, thanks for watching
awesome job. great video
Did you seal the tops once they fully dried? Is that required or recommended?
Great job
Great job! I like how you don't edit out the goof ups, so you can share these learning opportunities with us! It looks really bougie in the RV
I like that you are open to trying new things. Great job 👍
fantastic work! so much better than the vinyl!
Love it
Satisfied work!
Looks amazing!!
much much better!
agreed!

@dashshuman620 I bet you can do a UV protectant like 303 Aeospace on the epoxy. Once a year or so.
Thanks Eddie, I'm not sure but if anyone with experience knows, please keep adding to theses answers!! thanks y'all
Woaaaahhhh, no more glasses?! You switched to contact lenses?
Either way, you look great 😍
Did the white epoxy yellow over time and stain? Did you think the home depot brand was good enough?
The counters look great!
It looks great bro! It seems like it's one of those projects that seems intimidating at first but once in the process, it's not too bad
remember there are no mistakes, only happy accidents!
Anything hot (pan & pot) will melt this and Sun light will turn it yellow quick
Epoxy is not food safe either
Ultimate top coat from stonecoat countertops makes it scratch and heat resistant. And yes epoxy will yellow in sun not recommended for outdoor
@@freeq1829 I didn't know about ultimate top... good recommendation!
False
@@NoReverse77 some epoxy is good safe
Looks good!!!
This is amazing 😻
Great results!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big time!! Thanks Gregory
Your mobile home will look fancy! Nice job!
Thanks Sharon!
Good job!

What about the edges? The rim? Was that good too?
Oh man so so much better!
1000%

that came out mint!!

is it heat resistant?
Looks Great. Well Done. Just like a SUPER PRO.

Wow turned out nice ❤. I think I’ll give it a try now that you gave me some confidence 😂
For sure!!! I didn't know if I could expect getting good looking results on the first try and was surprised it was quick to get the hang of!!
@@ModernBuilds ♥️💯 it’s bc you’re talented asf man I’m sure I’ll get great results. I learn a lot from watching you. Thx a lot man.
Viscosity is resistance to flow so you wanted the epoxy less viscous so it would flow better
Result it's really good
Thanks Daniel!
You mean putting what amounts to tape on MDF gave you a crappy countertop?! 😲 What a shocker!
“Thin” and “viscous” are antonyms 😬
No more "On moderrrrrrrrrn Beeewuilds"?
He did it on the last video 😂
He did it at the end of the video.
Trick to try?: I saw @JonnyBuilds putting tape in the under edge, so drops stop there and don't get stuck in the wood? I Hope you can understand my english, cheers!
Just watch Evan and Katelyn, they have better tutorials with better success.
I am very interested in your videos and would like to work with you to help us shoot videos for our products,
The proof isn't in the pudding and never has been. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting.
u should try using a cake Spatula instead of a paint brush so there will be no bristles
the peel and stick could have worked if the counters had been less angles and had the typical round over. for the amount of corners and details they just couldn't work
Should have watched the legari epoxy guys before you did this. Could have avoided all these mistakes
First!
My advice, read the instructions first. Watch a few videos.
