Def the WA-251 for me. Recently sold my ML-1 because there was always this high sparkly thing happening around 10khz-12khz. It further confirmed it here for me. Great demo!
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. I’ll definitely be listening for that hi end boost. I’ve watched quite a few reviews comparing the vintage or reissue original mics warm audio clones and Slate digital emulates. I’ve always formed my own opinions regardless of what TH-camr’s and gearslutz posters say. I support the idea that you made the decision for yourself to let go of the ML-1 because it didn’t work for you. Thanks for interacting. I definitely appreciate it!
Thank you for watching and commenting. My thought process is always, what sounds good is all that matters. Warm Audio gets a lot of flack, but for me only, if it sounds good to me and achieves my goals, I’m going to use it.
I prefer the WA 251. Also another reason I went with the Antelope mic is because of the dual capsules. I would assume that since the slate lacks the 2nd capsule, it lacks the additional body that the WA251 has.
Much appreciated for you checking out the video and commenting. I am a fan of the Antelope Edge Duo. I may have to compare the Edge Solo to the Slate ML-1 because they’re both cardioid only mics. I’m also a fan of the WA251. I really do think Warm Audio did a solid job on it.
What do you mean by record in stereo? The ML-1 doesn’t have a Y cable to break out to two separate inputs like the Edge Duo or the Towensend L22. So what do you mean by “record in stereo?”
@@CarlMooreMusic By record in stereo, I meant recording with two ML1 microphones and working out in post. I have both the Slate and the Townsend. The Slate sounds much better and comparable to the Townsend that way. I also use their VMS pre amp whenever possible, I found I get a better performance with the emulations. I still prefer the Townsend but the Slates are excellent if you know it's limitations and strengths. I've compared it to the Sony C800, the Coles and it's been practically indistinguishable.
Definitely have to measure for phase coherency using that method but in theory that’s an idea. Practically, seems a little less probable for because you’d have to buy two ML1s and two VMS one pre’s. At that price, one could just buy a Townsend. I definitely used the VMS one pre in this video and any time I use the ML-1 and I do agree it’s optimized for that system.
This is a great review bro, and I purchased the ML1 sometime last year and sold it not to long after. And the reason was for what was shown here. It lacks midrange, UNTIL you went to the B side of the 251. That's when it got close
Yo thanks for checking out the video and commenting! I had always wondered about the single capsule design with Slate’s system and more so why they chose this design. I do agree that the B251 is closer to the Warm clone. Trying to get my hands on other clones to compare. Also want to compare Townsend Labs L22 emulation system as well.
the slate sound thin... Every sample I've heard from the slate were not convincing at all for me ... but the Warm, I'm really surprised. I've seen pretty good comments on it to.
Thank you for checking out the video and contributing. I think the ML-1 has its place, but in this versus, I don’t think it out performs the wa251. However, this stuff is all subjective and someone will prefer/use the ML-1. I think solid results can be achieved but depending on the desired outcome, it’s going to need some other items in the chain
@@CarlMooreMusic Yess I totaly agree with you, The Ml-1 is outstanding for its price and versatility, like you said it's subjective, I prefer more smooth mic sound and for me the warm sounds smoother .
@@alexlechanteur3606 I thoroughly enjoy the Warm Audio mics that I own. I have used the authentic counter parts they’re designed in likeness of. And my expectation is never for them to sound like the “vintage authentic’s.” Honestly speaking, no two mics will sound the same unless they’re calibrated to be matched. And with time, those vintage mics change or if they’re repaired in a lot of cases that alters the sound from its original tone. But I’m good with the stuff I have from Warm. It’s got the qualities I like, and the stuff I don’t like I deal with (as with anything). I like the idea of the ML-1 but I also like having multiple/appropriate tools to get the job done. Thanks again for commenting on my video and watching it.
@@CarlMooreMusic exacly, I have a wa87 and I really like it. I dont expect it to sound identical but in the "style of" and for me, warm delivers a lot. I dont get the hate around them from some audio engineer I know. They make an awesome job for what you pay.
@@alexlechanteur3606 that’s some of my main sentiments! For the price, their tools are solid. Plus there are MANY other factors that go into a good recording. And I’ve gotten plenty of GOOD recordings with my Warm tools.
Bro, Slate has a blackbird edition of mics and there should be a better 251 clone. Could you check out how it sounds ? Would be so nice to know! Thanks for your videos, sending u so much love.
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. At the 2:39 stamp of this video, you can hear the B-251 from the blackbird expansion pack. As well, I’ve got another video on the Slate Digital TV TH-cam page demoing that same emulation within that expansion pack as well. The link is here: th-cam.com/video/RXQepFaWhB8/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. The chain is actually the stock preamp from antelope audio for the wa251 and then the VMS one preamp for the ML-1 251 emulations. Straight forward
Sehr schöne Stimme hast du, da klingt jedes Mikrofon schön! Aber das Wa 251 ist präsenter. Allerdings kann man das slate Mikrofon auch dorthin bearbeiten!
Yea my conclusion with the ML-1 emulations is that it’s just a tad more 2D than the clones of vintage gear. There are higher priced clones than the WA251. They’ll make their way to the channel, but for the price I don’t think the WA251 is terrible. For the versatility and tonal options, I don’t think the ML-1 emulations are terrible either. I think most folks would just be trying to figure out how to achieve the depth with the ML-1 who are into that level of detail. Thanks for checking out the video, stopping by the channel, and commenting!
WA251 it’s the best vocal mic (for my voice) I’ve ever had. Over U87 and Chandler TG
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! I think Warm Audio did a legit job on this one!

I can clearly hear the VMS 'less focussed and airy' and the Wa-251 sits immediately in the m ix better, imho! Great work, thx!

Spot on. For the Slate to truly shine, you need to record in stereo.

amazing voice and song used! More of this please
Much appreciate for the kind words and support!
Beautiful!!!!!! Acapella selection next please!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for watching the video! I’ll have to come up with something to post worth being a cappella
WA251 definitely has more top and bottom with a 3-D glow. Slate is okay, but sounds a bit dull by comparison. Great video as usual!
You have a great voice man! 👏
Definitely appreciate the love!
