This little video isn’t just hypnotic, it’s a city planning study.

How did they manage to get ahold of so many PCC cars? They are absolutely beautiful.

@@-ashai-4178 Welllllll... Actually, Muni did complete rebuilds on most of these and extremely extensive repairs and retrofits on literally all of them. None of them have the original paint, unfortunately. Some have been repainted in other agencies' colors as an homage to historic paint schemes. So not all the cars actually match their original agency. Muni seems to think that they are allowed to repaint the cars in a given color if they're the same model and if they already own a vehicle from that agency's fleet.
Also, most of the workhorse PCCs that run regular routes got modern but period-looking ADA-compliant interiors and wheelchair equipment. They have a ton of completely historic ones too, with no modernizations at all, but those are rolled out sparingly to keep them in good condition. They only flood the streets with those on more special occasions.
Muni's historic F line (and E line) is simultaneously a rolling streetcar museum _and_ a fully functional, code-compliant transit line. So they can't run all the historic cars all of the time. That's a lot more expensive than just running the modernized PPCs and a few of the older models for "spice".

In all fairness, this is a crazy big and expensive undertaking. It wouldn't be remotely possible if San Franciscans did not believe that Muni is an integral part of city history that needs to be preserved via some pretty crazy subsidies. Muni was the first modern public transit agency in the country and world. San Franciscans get pretty sentimental about this sort of thing.
The effort to keep these PCCs in service day in and day out is kind of crazy. They were basically fully rebuilt in-house for modern operations. They have modern equipment underneath and that was all built by Muni staff. Not sure that any other agency could have even pulled this off. They already had a very large shop even before it was decided to run a historic line. They could make the transition.

The new modern Toronto street cars do look good though. I remember The Toronto PC cars cars when I went there in the early seventies. I used to love the way they look. Back in the day they were considered modern and streamlined.
