I remember being at that spot in June of 1981and seeing a Rice-a-Roni ad on one of the cars. Even took a photo of it.

From my last girlfriend, I am left with a lot of life experiences and memories....our trip to San Francisco in late June of 2012 is a big chunk of them. I remember it fondly.
I found the city to be very charming with a lot of fascinating history. To me, the entire cable car system is a great example of late 19th century ingenuity and engineering!
Thanks for posting; this brought back some bittersweet, yet valuable memories.

If you know how to drive a stick shift, it isn't that big a deal. You get used to it.

growing up there long ago was so cool
you could go to the movies on the weekend for only 1 dollar and they use to have stores where you could get posters for free when they got new ones , in the poster shops , and so many free shows on the weekend in the parks , and on some weekends they would let you ride the bus for free .......and you could when tickets on the radio to go to see rock shows , or see the ball game free ........but now its no fun there all the best things are all gone now living there is like being in jail ......if you dont have pass for the bus that has the right fee they will wright you up a fine of 99 bucks and you cant sit down on the ground they till force you to stand up there is no lay down law , and bikes they love giving out fines if you make the wrong move on the roads , jay walkers they give fines for that too , to bad the city is nasty and dirty the down town area smells of pee and bumps will hurt you if you dont give them money , dont keep your money in your back pocket they will take it and cell phones and laptops are a big target in the market street area they will run by you and take them and run , its like living in the movie 1984 and blade runner .....good luck if you move there

Manuel Rodriguez - to each his own, I guess. I’ve been in the area since 1971, loved the City, moved into a flat in 1984, still live here, love it as much as ever.

Awesome video!! Thanks for sharing. Some of the streets there are quite similar to here in Melbourne Australia.

The segment from 7:25 to 8:15 is the most intricate and interesting trackage in the entire cable car system.

Travelling in this place sucks without a car. Walking from my hotel to Whole Foods took 20 minutes I have to walk up to the Freemason museum thing. It was on my 3rd day here that I rented a car and drove out out of Hilton Financial District and into Sausalito then San Jose and got to eat in a proper organic restaurant called La Calafia instead of the junk at Fisherman's Wharf.

have always been curious about what iut must be like for these people who live in thses homes where these cable cars travel every day, but it can get pretty noisy at times when they pass....

1:35, I remember hearing about those small yellow cars you passed on the right there, your supposed to drive those around the city and follow maps they give you, right???? 3:50, what was wrong with the bell, sounded a lot different that some of the others I 've heard on other cable cars, sounded more like a tinkle tinkle than a clang clang...LOL. Sure weren't many people around on this route, let me guess, this was done in the morning sometime??? 12:40, now I finially heard the clang clang of the bell, guess the operator wasn't pulling hard enough the first couple of times......

There are two bells on each cable car. One is used by the conductor to communicate with the gripman ("tinkle, tinkle"). The other is used by the gripman to acknowledge the conductor's signals, and to warn traffic/pedestrians of the presence of the cable car ("clang, clang"). :)

I dont understand the rules of the road for cable cars. What happens if the light is red and there's a car stopped in front of the cable car? They cant stop on hills or else they need a push from the repair truck.

The cable car controls the lights...they turn green for them...

@@johngreen3543 OK for tourists, I guess. But for locals (like me) who used it to get to my job downtown, that sucks. $14 round trip?

A diferencia de los tranvías de los años 70...estos tranvías tienen esa banda celeste y blanco abajo que no me gusta...
