    I travel interstate (800 km journey) a number of times a year and wanted to sound deaden the car to make the journey more pleasant and less fatiguing.
    I did my SUV in 2 stages using Butyl based Sound deadener with the aluminium backing. First I did my 5 doors (both the inside and outside skins).
    After that there were several things I noticed,
    1)It dramatically reduced road noise inside the cabin (especially with city driving)
    2)It significantly increased the sound quality in my cars factory audio system (you need to do both inside and outside skins of the door
    )
    3)It made the car cooler in summer
    After driving around for 4 months I then did the whole floor from firewall, seats , transmission tunnel, rear wheel arches, all the way to the boot & Tyre well.
    This made the car even more quiet, especially on long distant highway trips. I didn't think this 2nd stage would improve the audio but it improved the sound system even more,
    making the high and low frequencies noticeably more defined. Even my wife who doesn't know a thing about cars has noticed the differences at both stages.
    I don't think it is that hard taking the interior apart.
    I timed my self when doing the floor and it took me 1.5 hrs to remove the seats, centre console, floor trims and carpet all the way to the boot.
    Then 1.5 days to clean the surfaces and apply the sound deadener throughout. You don't need to remove the factory bitumen based sound deadener if it is not cracked or falling apart just apply it straight over the top!
    For anyone thinking of doing this, I would highly recommend it regardless of whether your into modifying cars or not.
    If you are on a budget or are a little hesitant to pull the whole interior apart just doing the doors will make a big difference.
    Don't forget that a significant part of road noise comes from the tyres so choose them wisely!
    Great Video Car Builders!

      Great info, many thanks! Some questions:
      1. Some tires are less noisy? First time I heard this. Please do explain. I never thought tires had a noise factor in them.
      2. Instead of this laborious peel and stick, could you not just paint a thick layer of liquid rubber instead? Then a layer of aluminum roofing paint? RVs use EPDM rubber roofs and have a similar paint to refresh them every 5 yrs. What about EPDM rubber paint as a noise canceling technique?

      @@lass-inangeles7564 yes, there are tires that are noisier than others, the more heavy duty and performance based tires make a lot more noise than any other tire, the quiet tires are the more comfort based tires basically

      Tires, YES !!
      Think of the tires on 4wd off road vehicles as the worst. This is a significant difference in noise of highway tread car tires.

      Hi mate. Insul Layer is a 6mm closed cell foam, ideal for roof or behind panels that have minimal clearance and acts as a insulator and as a decoupling layer. Acoustic liner is a 12mm twin foam product (6mm open and 6mm closed- open top). It is ideally used as a modern carpet underlay to replace the older cotton jute or shoddy which can get wet, smelly and moudy. It is also often used on rear walls in utes and 4WDs. 👍

    • @carbuilders1
      @carbuilders1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. No, you won't get any noticeable difference. If you do things like adding sound deadener to the outer skin of the door and the inner card, it makes a difference but to lay deadener on deadener it won't make a discernible difference. The deadener stops panel vibration and one layer will achieve this. You are better putting time into the next layer, mass loaded vinyl and foam underlays to blanket external noise. www.carbuilders.com.au/mass-noise-liner-lite 👍

    • @carbuilders1
      @carbuilders1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bitumen is normally around 2mm-4mm from factory (this needs to be thicker to achieve weight). Normally with the butyl, you will find it is 1.5 times thicker than the substrate that it is adhering to. This generally equates to around 1.4mm to 2mm to panel steel.

      Tyre noise is a difficult one. We have been doing a lot of testing on products for this as it is a common issue and we will have a video, hopefully in the not-to-distant future, with our strategies to count this problem. You should use the butyl matting on the wheel arches and place pads through the floor pan. You are trying to stop sound reverberating through the panels (only single sheet metal areas) If you use sparingly on the floor pan you may be able to get a few pads in the roof too to counter the tinny sound, then use the closed cell foam you have on top of that. Looks like you will be short of underlay foam on the floor pan.

      @carbuilders1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right. Auto manufacturer's will engineer sound proofing additions to a dollar point, researching the optimal positioning for deadening to just meet consumer expectations. Vibration dampening mats are most effective on single skin metallic surfaces. It is unnecessary to apply deadener to over-lapped metal sections, top hat, chassis sections etc as these areas don't resonant. To engineer a car it takes some skill and technical analysis to pin point key areas, in reality most people will cover everything as they don't mind spending a bit more to ensure they have achieved the desired results. With paying customers, most people want everything covered. Keep in mind that this is one stage in controlling sound in your vehicle. 😎👍

      Hi Todd. If the existing or factory deadening is hard your right. However, if it is lose, cracked or lifting removing it to ensure a water tighten barrier. If it is a cotton jute/shoddy type material it will also need to be removed.
