A viola is SO FAR! From similar! To a violin!! It's bigger, sounds deeper and more "round" i play viola for almost 10 years! (Startet When i was 3) So. Its NOT the same thing!!!
Amazing Fish pony That's cheap for an instrument and especially if it's a high quality instrument. You can get a cheap instrument like a Violin for 74$ USD It won't be high quality but it's still an instrument.
I'm speechless! You guys are amazing! I love every, single one of you!!!! Sorry for the late upload! I'm working on auditions and applications on top of Juilliard Orchestra assignments... :(
Dear Viola Kid, Your music is powerful and full of life. I am an adult beginner ; you motivate people like me to press through our struggles and continue playing the viola for its pure joy and the pleasure it brings others. Please don't let anyone rob your the love and passion you bring to your viola music by their discouraging words. L.Smith
I got accepted into my arts school because of you. I searched up TH-cam one day because my school was FORCING me to play an instrument and I got attracted by the name of the Viola. Then I found you and watched all your videos. And 2 years later I got accepted into 2 arts schools in 2 years. THANK YOU!!!! Oh, I live in Atlanta too by the way. WE HAVE SO MUCH IN COMMON!!
I'm always baffled by professinal players cases, I'm in highschool and my teacher teaches about 100 people, and his case looks like something out of a sci-fi movie with all the dials and pockets, and his reusable grocery bag full of old instrument parts and strings for when accidents happen. Meanwhile in my case, I have my viola, my bow (with this weird sticky stuff by the frog that I can't get off), a cloth for rosin, and some weird cards with viola notes printed on them (our instruments get switched out a lot because we're kids and grow out of the instruments faster than you can say forte).
I have to say... Violas are awesome! Even though I play cello, but I still love viola. My best friend plays it and I love it so much. And especially when u play it
He’s right about the traveling in New York City part smh. I carry my violin with me to and from school everyday and people are so rude sometimes. They bump into you without a care ugh
Hey TVK, Currently I'm trying to complete a ton of Theory courses to receive my certificate from New England Conservatory Preperatory School. Could you do some videos discussing music theory i.e. circle of fifths, solfege, intervals, etc.?
+ThatViolaKid where did you get the mini humidifier? Can you send me a link to Amazon or the website you got the product from? I really need one since summer at my place gets crazy hot and dry and I travel with my viola a lot for my private viola lessons and then after that I go to my piano private lessons. So it would be a lot more helpful to find one. ☺️
also, could you do a video on how to play with passion? I feel like the more I play a peice, the less emotion I get from it and more of, oh, playing this again (Idk if you get what I mean). I have a performance coming up and I feel like I will look totally bland while playing. any tips to like not do that and just express myself?..
Love this! I have a Bam as well, and if you want to get rid of the scratches, a magic eraser works REALLY well. Like, mine looked like yours and it looks brand new. Also, I'm curious to know what you played with ASO....Love all of your work!
Hello. I'd like to be a professional musician some day. I love your TH-cam videos. I currently play the viola, guitar, and French horn. I would like to get a degree in horn performance and I've been looking into schools and conservatorys to possibly audition for. I was just wondering if you have any tips on what might be some good things to look for in a college or conservatory. I'm currently a junior in high school and Julliard is one of my dream schools. Thank you for reading my comment and I hope you'll have some advice for me. Any response or input would be greatly appreciated.
+Josh Ross Thanks for the comment buddy! I'm FAR FAR FAR from becoming a professional, but I appreciate the sentiment ;) What I would look for in a school is a teacher you really click with. That's gonna be the most important thing in your development, so go get some lessons with teachers and ask around :)
whats in my case ... well that depends which case, Case #1 as a flute, cleaning cloth, rod for swabbing the inside, Case #2 has a piccolo and grease for it. Case #3 has a clarinet, few reeds, cork grease and a swab, Case #4 has an oboe and reeds, Case #5 as a tenor trombone, mouthpiece, and some music. Case #6 has a baritone and mouthpiece, Case #7 has my bass trombone, 2 mouthpieces, tube of slide lube (trombotine), spray bottle, stand, metronome ( wish there was more space for the mutes as well) stand for the trombone. then my digital piano and my tuba do not have cases (yet at least)
+ThatViolaKid Awesome! My violist daughter and I plan on being there. Our good friend, Matt, is playing as well, so we will be sure to say hello if we see you!
Me: Viola (Rudoulf Doetsch Modern German 16.5") Extra Strings (I use Pirastro Obligato, sometimes using a different A) Rosin (Bernardel spring and summer, Salchow winter and fall) Kun Shoulder Rest Cloth Bow
Ugh you won't tell is the value of your viola:( nice video! I really like how down to earth you are with things. P.S. I play the viola and they are the BEST instrument;)
This video is quite old but a little tip: all my fellow bam case owners use nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol on the exterior, and it makes the scuffs/scratches much less visible!
How do you take care of your instrument so it looks so nice? I have that one spot on the back of my viola in the top right corner where the varnish kind of got messed up (either bc I hold it there sometimes or my left hand touches it when I shift up high)
+Tyler Chen My varnish is messed up too haha. There's not much to it other than just avoiding touching your instrument as much as possible. Don't worry about that spot though. That's bound to happen
Very curious as to what size your viola is? I'm having an incredibly hard time finding a case that fits my 17". The biggest issue has been the large bellow that my August Kohr has. I took a look at kyle hills page and its great! I'd really like to get my hands on one! I'm a music education major here in Montana and will be teaching music in the next couple years. Anyway. I've been digging your videos a lot as I trace through from old to new. Keep doing you
So apparently all the scuffs come off with those Mr.Clean magic erasers. I have a Bobelock violin case and it works really well. You could also use a foaming soap on a paper towel.
I'm a Beginner. In my case there is only a viola, rosin, a shoulder rest and lots of tears of frustrating :D I only play 6 month the viola (current telemann concerto in G minor) an try the f***ing vibrato. (Yes I saw your instruction of making the vibrato and it looks so easy. Me to my hand: "let's make the vibrato" and my hand "haha... you so funny" ) Maybe sometime...
The only things in my viola case are my viola, bow, shoulder strap, Rosin, some velvet thing that protects my viola, and a piece of foam because I don't have a shoulder rest

Interesting! I did not know it's a thing to use a mute during long rests in orchestras, what is the reasoning behind that? Just to make sure your instrument is extra quiet?
+ThatViolaKid at like 10:23 -ish, you talk about a performance mute, I didn't know that was a thing in orchestras? Just curious, never heard of them before :)
+ThatViolaKid Haha same, it happened when I was trying to go to a practice room and I ran into a xylophone. Complete accident haha. Well, good luck to you with everything. 😁

thats whats in My viola case, as well as rosin, a cloth, a tuner, a chin rest, a cover to go on to of my viola, and my bow
the only thing notable i have in my case is a stockpile of report cards i used to hide from my parents
"Very cheap" "300 dollars" *chokes* *cries because will not be able to afford an instrument and a bow* *lol*
Amazing Fish pony
I've seen one online for $178 it's affordable but probably has bad quality.
Yes I know, these instruments are sorta bad
it's cheap for being a professional bow, just try to get a beginners bow or something to start out
K. Pearison Weekly that's dirt cheap
Amazing Fish pony That's cheap for an instrument and especially if it's a high quality instrument. You can get a cheap instrument like a Violin for 74$ USD It won't be high quality but it's still an instrument.

I actually like his weirdness lol, he simply just has a sense of humor similar to mine. There's nothing wrong with not being basic!

Hey TVK,
Currently I'm trying to complete a ton of Theory courses to receive my certificate from New England Conservatory Preperatory School. Could you do some videos discussing music theory i.e. circle of fifths, solfege, intervals, etc.?
+Katelyn Miller Hmmm, I'll think about it! I'm not not too good at explaining that stuff, so I'll have to do some studying hehe

Everyone has different preferences :)

You are very funny! I think we need more humour in UK classical music! That's why I like Yuja Wang! She is always laughing and joking!
i actually like how your case has marks, idk for me they represent the journey youve been to and done
Love your content. Which strings are using nowadays?
Hi TVK! I love your videos, i play the viola too and may i ask what is your viola size? Thank you!

Give yourself some time! I really didn't get the hang of vibrato until high school haha...and I had been playing for 3 years at that point
The only things in my viola case are my viola, bow, shoulder strap, Rosin, some velvet thing that protects my viola, and a piece of foam because I don't have a shoulder rest
That's good enough :)
Hi! I am looking for a new bow and I wonder if you can give me an advise. My budget is up $350. Thanks
Anybody in the 442 Fan club? Also what did you play in that concert that you solod in?
+Santy Del Castillo I tend to play 442 every blue moon hehe. I played the Walton Viola Concerto!
What do you do to hold your music? I am debating between a bam case with a pocket vs without a pocket for my viola
I just put it in my backpack!
Hey, thanks for the video! I think you need to keep the certificate in a different place...
How big is your instrument? How big is your case? What airlines do you fly?
Could you show us (either on TH-cam or Instagram) more pictures of you with braids!

what brand is your case. and I named my viola David Bowie and my cello cornielius
It's a BAM case
Interesting! I did not know it's a thing to use a mute during long rests in orchestras, what is the reasoning behind that? Just to make sure your instrument is extra quiet?
+Goat Housing I'm not sure I said anything about using a mute during rests in orchestra...
+ThatViolaKid at like 10:23 -ish, you talk about a performance mute, I didn't know that was a thing in orchestras? Just curious, never heard of them before :)
Goat Housing Practice mute* haha
what kind of rosin is that? I've been looking for a good brand but can't seem to find one
It's Bernadel rosin

From France.
Awww thank you, Ruth!!!
+ThatViolaKid You welcome :)
Ok. Thank you.
+Josh Ross You're welcome!
what kind of use your string?
441? I've never tried that... In my orchestra we roll with 442 and my teacher tunes to 440, which is a pain.
+alcomzing Ooooo, everyone should definitely tune to the same frequency lol
Did you ever break any bows? Haha i play violin and have broken one. Btw stalkin your youtube hard. Love your channel and aspire to go to Juilliard 😄😙
+AsianFUN Haha I've actually never broken a bow! I try to take care of them! *Knock on wood*
+ThatViolaKid Haha same, it happened when I was trying to go to a practice room and I ran into a xylophone. Complete accident haha. Well, good luck to you with everything. 😁
Any tips for a beginner violinist for vibrato?
I have a video called How To Vibrato!
