Nice model. I have used Athearn replacement wheel sets on these .JB wheel sets ,but hard to come by these days if you like a true wheel that does not cake up so much. Question for you about close coupling on these. The stock set up has it so the diaphragms do not touch. About 1/8th apart even with the shortest Kadee coupler. Got a idea that is cheap?

Seems like a current keeper would work well.

Ok did you fix the engine and still have track power problems or was the trouble in the engine?

All track power problems were fixed by adding the esu power pack

Sacrifice weight and structural sturdiness for electronics is hard to watch.Keeping the weight in these removes the need for a keep alive and shell rattle.. They can be done with the weight and a little ,very little milling and still have great sound . Plus they can pull like a proto. Many new production locos have this idea of stripping weight. It makes it easier for cost savings of the build. Easy is not always the right way my friend. Sounds good ,but mine sound good and can pull.

I have zero pulling issues, weight doesnt fix the wheel material that conducts. These do have some weight plates added. Didnt really show that

@@RodimusPrime Not really agreeing with your take on the weight. The load forces the wheels down on the rail for positive contact/adhesion.The fine machining is a attempt for the perfect seating of the metal to metal contact. As the wheel wears in to the rail it seats more predominately for better contact. It takes longer to do this with less weight since nothing is perfect in machining, but closer the better especially with a rotating contact always changing with its rotation. So the weight or force downward pressure is a must for that seat to be established . Have a few of these . One with the original factory sound and one that was updated with sound. One of the finer truck designed with the sprung pivot point between the axles. This gives positive contact on rough track work and they have been going strong for 20 years or so.Remember when these first came out they were tested for endurance somewhere out east on a huge layout to see who's brand would hold up and these things were number 1. Great locos!
