Dutch harpist Remy van Kesteren has released his own alternative soundtrack for Oscar nominated movie ‘The Red Turtle’. The movie, with original music by Laurent Perez del Mar, that won the 'Un Certain Regard - Special Jury Prize' at Filmfestival de Cannes, was directed and written by Dutch Oscar winning director Michael Dudok de Wit, who also made the artwork for the release. The album has been released on the 30th of October on Dutch Indie label Snowstar Records, which is known for quality indie music from bands like I am Oak, Kim Janssen, Jack Poels and Donna Blue.
Harpist Remy van Kesteren is known for creating his own world with his compositions; a blend of neo-classical minimal, electronic music, alternative, jazz- and world influences, where the boundaries between genres evaporate. He studied at, among others, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he studied with the famous harpist Isabelle Moretti. Van Kesteren has won various prizes, including the Nederlandse Muziekprijs. His many awards led to concerts around the world, from Europe to the US, Japan and Africa.
Remy van Kesteren about making a soundtrack: “It always seemed like an enticing perspective I wanted to explore. But rather than wait for a director and film to find me, I decided to choose a movie that had already been made and that had inspired me and make a live score for it. Michael granting permission to do a rescore for his movie, was the beginning of a flow of creativity and new music. He understood it was not about redoing the music, but rather about further investigating the relationship between music and film and seeing where the inspiration from his film would take me and the music.”
‘The Red Turtle’ was released back in 2016, and was very well received with an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Animated Feature Film of the Year’ and winning the 'Un Certain Regard - Special Jury Prize' at Filmfestival de Cannes. The film was released by the legendary Japanese Studio Ghibli (known for ‘Spirited Away’, ‘Ponyo’ and many other animated movies) and directed by Dutch animator, director and illustrator Michael Dudok de Wit, who also won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for ‘Father and Daughter’ (2000). This makes him one of the eight Dutch Oscar winners in history. The artwork for both this new soundtrack and its first single was made by De Wit himself. He writes in the included liner notes accompanying the album:“Remy had a striking idea. For his music score he chose to focus on nature, on the different forces that nature exercises on us: water, fire, earth and air. His idea immediately appealed to me. When Remy sent me the first four fragments of his score, I thought they were simply wonderful. I have such an admiration for his talent.”
