    -- How to practice music daily --
    It’s easy to realise that you’ll make the fastest progress if you practice everyday. But much harder to show up consistently and actually DO it.
    Here are a few simple things you can do to improve the consistency and effectiveness of your music practice. I’ve used these myself to be super-consistent with my practice over periods of years… Just apply one or two of these and you’ll start to see much better results.
    * Have your aims and WHY in place before you start
    * Keep your plan short and manageable
    * Practice at a set time each day
    * Have each day's practice topic carefully planned out in advance
    * Set up your practice space to make things easy

    I'm a mainly self taught bass player, but a procrastinator, and a single dad with small children, and a day job, and getting older (nearly 60).
    Despite all this, I mainly have a love of jazz and its various fusion forms, but also a wide genre-appreciation, meaning of course that lots of practice is needed.
    Your videos are therefore brilliant for me, offering fresh and very practical inspiration.
    I'm so glad I stumbled upon your posts on here.
    Thank you.

      So glad to hear this. Keep going. It's amazing how small amounts of focused practice can add up to huge progress over time. Don't let the feeling that you need to do LOTS of practice stop you from doing the one small thing that's next on your list...

    I am grateful for these tips Mark. It's so wonderful that you understand the emotional connection with the music and then how to execute a simple, daily practice to move us ahead. My challenge as a player and a teacher of three instruments is there is so much material to cover, so I will break it down daily for myself with a consistent time and clear focus. You have a unique gift in your discovery. Thank you for sharing this.

    After deferring practice for many years, daily routine with a short version and emotion intention were 4 things that resonate with me. I have a list of favourite which are achievable for a beginner, i attempt to play each in order, number 1 is almost there. Short version is to play the one, long is to try each. Because i am clear with my intention and emotionally engaged (it is my highest priority at this stage of my life) practice is a pleasure.

    I used to "blame" classical music for promoting perfectionism. I was wrong. I was approaching classical music as a perfectionist.
    This approach makes so much sense, at a time when I desperately need it.
    What stood out for me in this video - surprise! - was the commitment to order and orderliness: just hearing the description of the morning's workspace made it click for me -- the battle must be won, in increments, each and every day. And the more that can be done to make a routine schedule accessible, inviting, and doable, the better.

    A few years ago, I took your course on how to practice. I enjoy reading your emails in the morning over tea. You have had a profound impact on my music. I now have a music room where my band (which I didn’t have before) comes to rehearse every week. Every morning, after tea, I go in there to practice with an idea about what I want to accomplish. My playing has moved forward in ways I had always hoped for but that had always felt out of reach. Thank you doesn’t express my gratitude well enough.

    Hi Mark - love your tips on practising - these are all things I knew, to some extent, but seeing them all together in a package was useful to crystallize the ideas. Thinking of your goal at the start of each session was the suggestion that I will add to my playing time. Keeping these goals in mind will definitely help to motivate me. One thing that I might add - journalling! I may think that I am practising most days of the week but if I actually write down the dates and times, I can catch when I am deluding myself - journalling keeps me accountable! Some times it is just a date and time, other times it includes specific topics, challenges and progress. Also, I can write in tomorrow's plan in pencil to know exactly where to start and what to cover.

    Excellent summation. I like how you stress abandoning perfection and keeping a practice space and material prepared and organized. Consistency. It is so easy to say " ah what the heck, I only have 15-20 minutes today so why bother". Which is wrong. One can have an effective practice with such little time if the focus and priority is correct. These tips are pragmatic for any hobby or pursuit one takes up.

    Thanks! What I enjoyed about this video was realizing I had already put several of these tips into play...now I can pick one or two of the others to implement immediately. For me, the best tip is one I instituted recently (I am newly back to playing after a years long hiatus): set time every day. For me, it is 10 AM after my morning routine is complete. My practice session is now a reward for getting my daily chores done. I will now work on defining my long term goals and articulating my "why?"

    Hi Mark! Thanks so much for this brilliant little video - even as a hobby pianist in retirement, I could identify with EVERY single point that you made. My aim in playing melodic minors in thirds (sixths are a little more difficult!) is to be able to play them WITH EYES CLOSED!!! Doesn't that make you laugh??? - but it trains concentration as well!

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's a great thing to aim for, Maija. Closing your eyes automatically puts more emphasis on noticing physical feelings - so it can be an excellent way to practice.

    The best tip is about having productive habits that are easily repeatable; which often means removing barriers. An obvious one in a pandemic with significant others in the same house is to get used to playing softly or using ear phones! But it's also about having (for keyboard users) stuff within easy reach, such having a table-top "child's" midi keyboard ready to enter notes or try out chords etc in front of a computer screen. I used Dorico now as its been on offer and it's just great to use. Then when I'm ready I can either play what I've done in Dorico or switch to my 88 key piano right next to me.

    BREAKTHOUGH MOMENT I've been trying to memorize a 12 bar piece for a long time (a Jens Larsen Etude), no success, tried your advice and in 25 minutes I had it, admittedly it's still rough, but a major step forward. I also had some assistance from Phillip Johnston's "The Practice Revolution" - and an exercise called "The Seven Stages of Misery" which I subjected myself to yesterday. These two processes have taken me appreciably forward, which is all I hoped for from a perfect practice session. Thanks Mark.

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's brilliant, David. Great work! And I love your attitude here. The fact that it's still rough doesn't matter since you've made a clear step forward. As long as you keep moving forward, you'll inevitably make rapid progress even if you don't get there in one go.

    Thank you so much for this great advice! It made me discover why I don't practice: My "why" is playing together with others, and that hasn't been possible for a year now. After having studied the organ, I learned the viola (yes, intentionally, because you can still do this as an adult). I yearned to make music together with others, and I thoroughly enjoy being a thread in the woven sound.
    Since our last concert in March 2020 was cancelled, our orchestra hasn't met again. During this year, I practised fewer times than I have fingers. Playing on my own gives me no incentive whatsoever though I love the sound of my instrument, and I could write a list of what I could work on. Usually, I have no problem practising - when I know what for.
    Could you maybe make a video about what could work in such a situation?

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So glad it helped, Christiane. I'm not sure what you're asking here, though. Is it how to motivate yourself when you have no events coming up? The short answer is to organise something yourself.

    • @christianemichelberger8245
      @christianemichelberger8245 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PlayInTheZone , yes, organising something myself would be best. Unfortunately, meeting others will have to wait, here in Germany we're still in lockdown and it will get become even stricter next week.
      But writing questions can be a great way to finding an answer, I had the idea of just playing orchestral music I have the sheet music for and have a play-along. That'll give me enough motivation to practice again.
      Thank you for replying, I find your take on practising so inspiring!

    I have a question. I struggle with a piece called callejon de luna by vicente amigo. There are some parts i just can't master. Any tips?

    Before retire I practiced mostly on weekends. Now I take weekend break and practice a lot monday to friday. Do one really need to practice every day?

    I like what you're saying. However in rock and roll lots of it is improvisation. Mastering a piece is slightly different. Listen to Hendrix. He plays a song differently every time. It's his song as well...most if the time.

      For sure. The best improvising musicians I know approach practising improvisation in a very structured way, though. That doesn't mean that there's no creativity involved - just that they put very specific restrictions in place that help them really target effective ways to develop that creativity.

      You should be getting emails with plenty of useful info if you've signed up. If they're not coming through for some reason then email me to let me know and we can sort it out.

      3 hours a day?! That’s crazy. I practise something like 5 minutes every second day. Well, I’m still sh.t, but I’m enjoying it. Do you have a teacher?

    Oh he is such an insufferable old bore who, amongst other things, needs desperately to stop waving his arms about!
