      How can you teach MUSICIANS if you have NO qualifications and cannot play? Your playing is a amateur level!

    Thanks, yes, I experience flow now and then. I think the following can be some good additions to your tips in the video.
    * Being well rested.
    * Good health.
    * Having a good balance in general in life (not too many worries, etc.)
    I have also over and over again realized a very interesting thing that at least works when I improvise music. If I listen (even just for a few minutes) to some good music of a particular genre before I play music myself, then I get into that mood, or perhaps mode is a better word here, and my improvisations then flow in that genre very effortlessly. It does not matter if the genre is Irish folk music, baroque music, french waltz, blues, etc.

    Flow ... I've felt it dancing many times. There are times when it surprises me it's so extraordinary; the words to the music, the musicians playing, my dancing; all of it becomes simultaneous as though transcending spacetime. Flute playing is harder for me though. I started late in life.

    I really struggle to get into the zone. I may be too conscious of my surroundings, thinking of something or someone undesirable, making up an ugly scenario as I play, or that I'm doing something wrong by doing what I'm doing. However, I'm able to still play while this chaos runs through my mind

    Flow, yes, I've been there. This is only the second of your videos I have watched. But before I proceed I want to tell you something a friend, a great Sax player in the Portland area, David Evans told me a few years ago. He said if you are playing an instrument, learning to play it, you want to incorporate it into being part of your body, not a separate thing, like a machine you are operating. That was the best advice I ever got. It is like what Isaac Stern was teaching when he said to the violin student in China, to sing next time when you play that. It's how we get good at riding a bicycle or hitting a golf ball. And it feels really good. I thought of this because that is how you talk about music and playing.

      @@PlayInTheZone Mark , for every REALLY professional musician this knowledge is basic and is learnt before age 10. You are reinventing bicycles. How dare you claim "most musicians don't realise" - how on earth do you know what they realise???
      Advertising Standards agency should get interested in your claims.

    I've felt 'flow' the most when riding my motorcycle at higher rates of speed on twisting roads. Pushing slightly above my usual cruising rate where some would consider approaching danger but keeping below excessive irresponsibility. I cannot get into this state on a pedal bike, having the additional power available allows me to go beyond my own physical limitations where thinking seems to stop and instinct takes over. It takes a while to get to the level of ability to enter this state. I'm still working on getting my basic playing up to speed and hope to begin to 'flow' musically in a similar manner. Attaining fluency within the area between a challenge and the lack of ability starts to become a problem.

    Been in "flow"?
    I'm not sure this qualifies but I heard from a highly trained martial artist that real combat/a real fight, is like watching oneself in a movie, and that techniques come out needing one's permission but not his planning.
    I suppose this must be similar to flow in music, but I wonder how the required intensity to trigger it would come about. I am pretty sure one would have to have lots of practice/meditation on the subject matter in for this to happen when the time comes.
    I'm not sure this really applies, as music is seldom a life or death thing, but I think it must be similar.

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the research seems to show that having an element of danger can help trigger flow. But it's not 100% necessary - just makes it easier to get in the state. Some people might see the "risk" of having your playing judged by others provides something similar for music. Danger to the ego rather than the body...

    • @svetavinogradova4243
      @svetavinogradova4243 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PlayInTheZone there is no research, as the best musicians never disclose their real process, and the real can only tell how to fail - you are one of them, you cannot play! Mark, you are NO musician! You deceive people into trusting you! Why? D you sincerely believe that you are in a position to advise musicians????? Could you please do the definition of a "musician" - is it a hopeless amateur who tries to tinkle with an instument for deluded self-satisfaction? or is it a professional with absolute pitch, thorough knowledge of music theory and practiced well since 5y old, who makes a living out of playing or creating music?

    Are you upper middle-class, feeling simply shamelessly entitled? Are you sleeping OK at night, while your activity reminds a lot of a deception and disinformation?

He may not be a “proper musician” by your definition, but consider how that almost all professional athletic coaches do not play better-or even as well as- their players. Yet the players advance their skills and careers through the assistance of an observant and dedicated coach.
