      It's great when you don't RTFM, that's why I rely on Loop's vids, they get people up to speed and you can learn better by watching someone in action and mimicking them.
      Ziv's tutes are an invaluable asset to the community and have had me purchase a thing or 2 in the past.
      I might not watch all his vids but the ones I do, they're my go to for how to get things done quickly, rather than those boring manuals.

    First - great review! Now this: After owning the UDO S6 and finally selling it, I can attest that no display handicaps UDO's synths badly. I don't mean that George Hearn needs to make his synths a "menu-mess" and sacrifice his lovely hands-on workflow. Far from it. Just give us the ability to name patches and see mod-maps. No display means you cannot reverse engineer or even SEE complex (or simple) modulation routings, no naming patches other than F7, etc. You cannot find that saw lead you created a month ago without a pencil and notepad. You can't name custom wave shapes which means you won't be able to find them. The S6 I owned was fun for a while but when you can't remember your work, you always get lost coming back to it. UDO synths sound great but George doesn't put a simple 2-line OLED display on the unit due to what users perceive as stubbornness to keep this "simplicity and hands on" notion. I would certainly consider this synth with a display.

      It does impact one's ability to refer to their work. I didn't think it would be a deal breaker. But after the midi issues I experienced, I opted to let it go in favor of something else like the 3rd Wave which is picqued my interest.

      @@Station2Station-du2gh 3rd Wave here too, so different than a S6 I had, both are very different workflows too.
      The S6 can do some amazing things, something the PEAK cannot get close to, but I felt that there was a user disconnect with the S6 so opted to upgrade to a 3rd Wave which is in a league of its own.
      Compared to my PEAK, the UI isn't clumsy like the PEAK, and the sound is a whole new level.
      S6, well that has to be seen/used 1st hand to make comparisons, I can do what the S6 does, just much quicker and with twice the voicing.
      What ever you have, enjoy making music, is my motto.

      @kierenmoore3236 Well, to each their own, I love the sound of the Super 6. They are beautiful instruments. And I get the intention behind the design: it's a performance box, with a ton of capabilities. When using it, I relied heavily on my ears and had the task of committing the controls to muscle memory. But with a Trigon already, and that my use cases are mostly studio recording, I could part with it. I'd consider repurchasing at a lower resell price.

    This is a beautiful Demo of a modern classic beast of synth. Thanks loopop for not only showing, explaning but furthermore playing it excellently. The UDOs ticks all boxes regarding hands on Sound exploration. Some may say, its expensive and missing this and that, but - owning an early s6 - touching it the first time you‘ll fell in love with it. Build like a tank to last. Well designed. And considering, that this is made by a small excellent manufacturer in Bristol, and by I‘d say a young brave Mastermind George Hearn in tradition of Dave Smith. In a personal experience - very caring about his customers. There are more complex and Feature packed synths that are cheaper (Hydras), and others, doing far less and priced higher (Prophet 5). But this is at the end a combining best of all. Its for those, who love CS 80s (no display again) and Juno/Jupiters, Roland does not build anymore in this high quality since decades. Plus all modern stuff included. Anyway: a small Display or an optional Editor (not a big deal,there is one for S6) really would help organize the Sound Designs. My wishlist: Small Display, even a classic 3 digit would help, and a bit less in price. An observation : you‘ll find the UDOs in all that avantgarde synth heros studios: Matt Bowdler / The unfinished (Dune Soundtrack), Alex Ball, … there is a reason … 😉

    not only can you upgrade the keyboard on S6, but you can also get a ribbon controller for it. Amazing line of synths, I am a happy owner of the S6, and while I do love Gemini, I wish they left LFO1 clone function as I often use DDS2 as a modulator, and LFO1 as a second oscillator. Also, UDO community is amazing and George and his team keep improving S6 (biggest thing for me is the latest fw with mix as modulation destination).

    I love how the UDO synths sound, but went with the Novation Summit instead. The Summit has tons of modulation routes on the front panel as knobs, so it is a cheaper alternative to the Super 8 that still feels quite immediate, and is great for exploring with knobs. I do think that the UDO sounds somewhat nicer with respect to pure oscillators. But when it comes to sounds with filter+drive or heavy FX the Summit has a unique character of its own.

      @loopop  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don’t think you guys understand how “binaural” works it’s not just about panning the same preset left and right, but rather using a different phased modulator to the left and right voices. I explain it in depth in video if you care to watch that section. It not impossible to do on other synths, just explaining what it is.

    • @jantuitman
      @jantuitman 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I did a binaural patch once. There is a start phase on the Summit LFO page, but I didn’t have much audible success with that so maybe I am still missing something

    • @dankeplace
      @dankeplace 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@loopop there is a reason "Binaural" audio exists, it's 3D positional audio and anyone who says it's a "gimmick", clearly does not know how it works.
      How we hear and how this is done in a synth is totally different than a panning hard L and R of a copied patch.
      This is why you literally need no FX on the UDO, it can achieve 3D space with the binaural aspect.
      I appreciate your patience with this individual, but alas I think your words are falling on deaf ears.

    • @newignis
      @newignis 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have both Summit and Gemini. So far I have not been able to replicate the same binaural sounds on the Summit. There is phasing going on in other places than the lfo. A cheaper and very satisfying way to reach a grand binaural effect: get two Pro-800 , use the same preset, play them together one panned fully left and the other fully right. The effect is much more impressive than what my Summit delivers in that area. I’m sure the Summit must be able to do it also, but its inherent stability makes it more difficult to reach it quickly compared to analog designs such as Pro-800. On the Gemini, you should consider the binaural switch as a shortcut for getting these effects faster.

      @loopop Others include jams in their demos and do it in a way that makes it fairly clear how the featured device is contributing to the jam. To me, it's valuable to hear everything that a device can do in isolation, but with no musical context it's hard to get a sense of how a given device would actually help me to make music. It's also just not very fun to listen to a whole demo of a synth in isolation, because I would never use a synth like that. One advantage of the 8 over the Gemini is its ability to modulate LFO1 rate from the bender; this is essential if you are doing audio rate modulation with LFO 1 and want the tuning ratios to remain intact when doing pitch bends.

      All up to you honestly. Our opinions really shouldn't sway you beyond maybe if someone's had issues. Whether or not it sounds good, feels good, is fun to use, fits on your desk, is affordable to you - is all personal opinion. I could tell you negatives and positives for each of those points and either could be my opinion. Best bet is to try one yourself if possible!

      @@haz8064 if you can try both it's the best route. I spent a few hours in Andertons (their Gemini was actually broken a bit) and went with the Polybrute for the features in the end, but two weeks later I'd switched for the Gemini and never looked back. Feature sets are fine and all, but when an instrument just has something special to it and talks to you then no feature list can beat it

    People say its expensive yet people will happily pay more for a prophet 10 which , although iconic, is a very limited synth so this seems a bargain especially as it sounds so fat with swirls of sharp fm serenading the layered sound, nice, but better than the muse 🤔?

    • @loopop

      I have nothing against Polyend or TE at all! Unfortunately both companies didn't send me their instruments pre launch (or even offer that I buy them), so you need to ask them, not me. While I might still buy/borrow their instruments in the future, when there's so much coverage about something (especially Polyend Synth, which seems nice BTW), I prefer to take the road less travelled and explore other gear. I might do OP-XY though, as that seems like something I'd travel with.

      Thanks. I'm not sure it's overpriced considering what you get and who you get it from, nor if FPGA oscs and analog filters qualify as "vst in box" but if you're fine with VSTs on a computer, then Gemini's price is irrelevant

    • @dankeplace
      @dankeplace 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed, tRoland make some of the worst VSTs in a box, but other companies excel in making great digital synths, FPGA is an amazing tool when used well.
      PEAK, UDO6 and 3rd Wave, all which I have owned, all use FPGA and are brilliant what what hey do.
      Show me 1 VST which has an analog filter, then you can start to compare, but tRoland Cloud seems to mimic what all their synths do, that's where VSTs in a box comes into it.
