  • Opa Came up to my shop for a day so we thought we would make something. A bow Sander is a great tool for finishing round edges like handles and knobs.
    though this is not exactly a Japanese hand tool but it can feel like it with how simple and fun it is to use. how to carving for of small pieces can be difficult but this can really help.

      this is a 3X18 that I cut to the width I needed. I am thinking of making then with a 21" belt and a 32"belt just for the fun of it. I just get them at the home center but these were just lying around the shop.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      really your only fix is a vice and hammer. and that has no guarantees. they are not easy to bring back into true. are you talking about a brace or a breast drill? also, make sure you are using the correct bit for the chuck.

    So ahhh, I've attempted this twice now and snapped my oak bow both times. It is about 5mm thick x 30mm wide, and soaked in boiling water for about 15 minutes.
    Any ideas?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Vivian if it is European oak you will want to soak it longer. The other question is how much are you bending it.ours was about 27cm long (10") and we bent it about 3cm (1.5")

    • @MichaelVivian
      @MichaelVivian 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm, mine might be a bit longer than that. Might try once more with a slightly shorter bow. Cheers!

    • @przybyla420
      @przybyla420 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Three ideas: 1) use quartersawn stock with little to no grain runout (very straight) 2) sapwood bends easier than heartwood - don’t choose a piece with both 3) kiln dried wood is less flexible and more brittle than air dried.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no idea actually I would have to measure it when I get home. I just set the belt down and measured the belt. Then made the spar a bit longer and then cut it to a fitting size
