    My favorite moment with a wild magic sorcerer was when we were level 2 or 3 and he rolled the result that would cast reincarnate on him if he died in a short time period and then the next turn he rolled a again and exploded in a fireball died and reincarnated on the spot.

    Played a wild magic sorcerer who was ashamed of how he couldn’t control it. Wanted so badly to be a wizard he carried around a “spell book” and bluffed every time he cast a spell to convince people he was one. The party knew it was BS but pretended to believe him as a joke.
    “Hey Doonigan, you got a spell for this in your secret book?”
    “Uhhhhh...” *page is a doodle of a mindflayer* “Nope.”
    “Weird, this just looks like a diary entry...”

    subtle spell can actually be very good. It allows you to cast within the area of a silence effect, and it makes any spell without material components uncounterable, because the rival spell caster will have no indication of the casting. I believe there were sage advice rulings from Jeremy Crawford on both uses.
    My DM also tends to make NPCs very suspicious of any casting they witness because in a world of magic, he reasons people would view a caster chanting arcane words and drawing symbols in the air like we might view someone brandishing a weapon or pouring a strange powder into someone's drink. It raises eyebrows.

    • @DungeonDudes
      @DungeonDudes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Subtle spell is extremely useful, and I agree, many players don't understand that in a world of magic, spellcasting is something even normal people might be able to recognize: even if they can't discern what the spell is or how to do it. In my worlds, arcane somatic and verbal components of *genuine* spellcasting are obvious: somatic components cause arcane sigils to dance along your fingertips (al la Dr Strange), and your voice takes on a resonant tone when you cast a spell. This doesn't happen if you're a sorcerer with subtle spell!

    • @nathanpredmore7577

      Especially the subtle suggestion in public like saying “Can I have a free drink” instead of chanting magic words to get a free drink

    In my early days of D&D I played a wild sorcerer who was completely oblivious to the potential of his power. Instead of working to figure out the origin of his magic or how he can wield it, he just tried to figure out how to turn into a potted plant. He was overjoyed when his wild magic ended up turning him into one.

  • @TheEiinar
    @TheEiinar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +119

    Depending on adversaries, Subtle spell can be really powerful in combat. Since letting someone cast without any somatic or verbal components will make it close to impossible to
    counterspell them.
    Immensely frustrating if the BBEG just teleports out, and the a party arcane caster goes: “I cast counterspell”. and GM goes, you never saw a spell being cast.

    • @fieldy409
      @fieldy409 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that counterspell thing with subtle spell is debateable and up to the DM since some spells you can see coming towards you. But anyway subtle spell is also suprisingly good for combat because you can cast spells in any situation where other casters couldnt. You can cast with your hands tied, or your mouth gagged, or with an ogre bearhugging you in a grapple. So combined with a teleport spell the only way to capture you alive is sticking you in a no magic zone lol. Or you can blast something holding you.

      The only way I think some one could counterspell subtle spells is by being used the effects of detect magic. So they could see the magic power building up within them as they prepare to cast a spell.

    I feel like you underestimated the power a charisma character casting subtle mass suggestion while casually holding their crystal focus in their pocket amongst a crowd. Or the fact that it is a feature unique only to sorcerers. Even an Arcane Trickster with greater invisibility has to chant verbal components in a clear voice, which would be easy to hear. Subtle sorcerers with urchin background can sneak up with a rogue (or just be the rogue, honestly), twin greater invisibility the both of them, walk in to a room and (depending on if the npcs can pass a check to hear the two) cast a spell without anyone even understanding how it's happening (depending on spell descriptions. Obviosuly rays and spells like fireball have a line pointing back to the caster).
    Also, the ability to blatantly ignore the effects of silence for 1 spell point at high levels is awesome. Or the ability to cast a spell against someone while underwater or being strangled. The argument can also be made that a Subtle Sorcerer with Greater Invisibility is immmune to Counterspell thanks to Xanathar's rules on "Perceiving a Caster at Work". Even without Greater Invisibility if the sorcerer is using subtle on a spell without a material comonent (If you can't percieve the caster is casting a spell, you can't trigger the reaction with "when you see a creature within 60 ft cast a spell" because you simply don't see a creature casting a spell)
    Honestly, a lot of it depends on how "real" your dm is with the roleplay. For example, two guards bar your entry to the town proper due to a crime of some sort. Sure, you can charm person one of the guards, but before you even cast the spell you chant and wave about. That other guard's not going to sit there and ask questions about what you did to their buddy. They are probably going to pressume hostility and attack. However, walking up to one of the guards while subtle casting Charm Person (only has v and s) then saying "Buddy! I haven't seen you in ages!" is both imperceptible and a free gamble (if they pass the save and don't regard you as a "friendly acquaintance" just do a "oh, sorry friend! Thought you were someone I knew." Sure it realies on some social checks, but it's a good thing charisma is your highest stat)
    That was longer than I meant it to be. I just really love Subtle spell. Sorcerers sacrifice versitality and spells on hand (high level Wizards have more spells prepared then sorcs have known at level 20) for the ability to cast a small pool of spells better than other classes can cast those same spells (Twin Polymorph at level 8 to make 2 T Rex's, ie.). For 1 spell point Subtle adds a HUGE amount of versitality for a class that severely lacks in it
    Tl;DR An Urchin Sorcerer with Subtle and Quickened as their first two metamagics makes an arguably better (or at least more spellcastery) "Arcane Trickster" than the actual archetype, and it's awesome.

    • @michaelball2529
      @michaelball2529 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What if someone had cast detect magic could they see the magical power building up to cast a spell their for counterspell it. I only ask because I am letting a player of mine use an ability similar to the subtle spell metamagic. Though his is constant effect on every spell he cast.

    • @_NobodySpecial_
      @_NobodySpecial_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@michaelball2529 thats kind of broken also the detect magic pulse is an action making it impossible due to them not being used on the same turn (after the detect magic users turn the pulse ends) unless a caster is slowed and takes 2 turns to cast but even then they would have to cast as a reaction which has to happen outside of their turn and they would no longer perceive the spell being cast

    • @thebritishgamer836
      @thebritishgamer836 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another thing to consider:
      If you put levels into arcane trickster, you can cast mage hand legardemain (invisible mage hand that can pickpocket people, amongst other things), and if you silent cast this you can do it right in front of people while talking to them, useful for theft, or simply holding a mirror behind someone to cheat in a card game, idk, I haven't thought of a lot of uses for it but I think it could be a fun combo for a creative player

      Alternatively, I would just let them pick lightning/thunder spells from any/all spell lists. There is roughly 1 good lightning/thunder spell for each main spell level which is really all you need, but several are only on the druid spell list. I would also consider extending the class features to wind-based spells as well and again giving them access to the druid spell list to get them. Reflavouring spell damage types will just make your storm sorcerer play the same as any other sorcerer which takes the fun out of different archetypes.

    • @Shandrath
      @Shandrath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In this type of situation, i would allow all energy spells to be used much like chromatic orb, in this case, be cast as lightning/electric. Please follow the spells dimesions, e.g. touch, bolt, splash, cone, line, sphere, 120 degrees from hands; just change the damage type. Flame Bolt could be Electric Bolt (1d10) lightning damage. Effects such as freezing, burning, loss of healing ability, etc should be worked out ahead of time and not during play. Try to keep the spells as close to the original as possible without breaking energy rules. Flaming bolt would do the same damage as freezing bolt, but catch things on fire instead.

      @@mildsatyr3731 Here's my kobold dragon sorcerer's backstory:
      A gypsy fortune teller bought what she thought was a pseudodragon egg. The old gnome used her magic to incubate and hatch the egg, but was disappointed to discover that the tiny creature, while clearly dragon-kin, was in fact a kobold. Though since his colour was extraordinary, she kept him as a combination of pet and servant.
      Orgo often pretended to be the fortune teller's familiar, while he was small enough for this ruse. She used the tiny kobold to assist her in the act which kept her from too often using the true divination that drained so much vitality from her.
      The young kobold's arcane potential eventually flourished. The fortune teller started teaching what she could of her magic, this knowledge Orgo soaked up like a sponge. However, Orgo quickly mastered all she had to teach, though they found that his magic was innate sorcery rather than the studied wizardry used by his teacher.
      As he grew older, Orgo learned that his small size and magic have proved to be quite helpful when assisting the gypsies in some of their more nefarious activities. Orgo also became skilled at converting stolen jewelry so it could be easily sold.
      Orgo recently left the gypsies and has been using his arcane talents to make a living.

He can deal 1 fire, or cold, damage per minute to anything he's holding, and he can also produce dim light or 1dl of water per minute if he concentrates on it. Thiese effects get's sped up to take 6 seconds if he's just cast a spell that deals damage of that element.
    I think it's a super cool concept we've come up with, we also had his body transform into a tiefling to cope with the split personality, but i dont know how balanced it is :)

    In an undead-themed campaign, I have a backup character who is a flesh golem, (essentially Frankenstein's monster as a race) whose sorcerous power comes from all of the deceased people she was sewn together with. However, that manifests itself as being a wild magic sorcerer, and whenever she loses control she literally comes apart at the seams. She's adorable.

    When I DM'ed the Tyranny of Dragons campaign, one of my player created a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer with an... unusual origin.
    Deron, a normal human studying to become a wizard had his hometown burned to the ground by a Red Dragon. Some time, later he kidnapped one of the dragon's wyrmlings, and used it in a supremely dark ritual to steal its power. This is what turned him into a Sorcerer.
    All I could tell the player about this concept was 'That's messed up!'

    • @gamester512
      @gamester512 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To make it even more messed up, what if that Red Dragon was legitimately his Draconic Ancestor and the Wyrmling could have turned out to therefore be his half-sibling and it wasn't actually the *ritual* that turned him into a Sorceror but rather being exposed to the flames of a Red Dragon's breath weapon?

    Tym went out into the world to see the sights and broaden his horizons, only to get caught up in a chain of events that would have him enlarging a Cleric to 600 ft tall, fighting alongside a goblin monk named Grundle Punch, and falling in love with the leader of a group of Yuan-Ti heretics as they fought shadow dragons and dracoliches to prevent them from releasing Char onto the world..

    The way I handled the Wild Magic Sorcerer when I was DMing was that the Sorcerer had to roll a D20 when they casted anything stronger than a Cantrip, and they triggered a Surge when they got a 1.
    Also I personally gave Wild Magic Sorcerers a homebrew spell based off of something from Baldur's Gate 2, Reckless Dweomer was a first level spell that I had Wild Magic Sorcerers come with from level 1 that didn't count against their Spells Known, it could be Upcast and when you casted it you could pick *any* spell on the Sorcerer list of that level and Reckless Dweomer would copy that spell (I.E. 6th level slot is any 6th level spell, but Reckless Dweomer couldn't be used to cast a 6th level Fireball) without fail... but it *always* triggered a WIld Magic Surge in addition to the normal effects of that spell

    The best rogue I've made was one with 7 levels of Sorcerer, using the Shadow origin. That grants my mutli-classed rogue 120 ft Darkvision, and the ability to spend 2 sorcery points to cast Darkness and be able to see through it. Rather than taking damage dealing spells, I took spells that could disable foes with Sleep and Hypnotic Pattern, add movement spells like Misty Step and Dimension Door, as well as spells like Spider Climb and Gaseous Form for added utility and movement. Plus taking Subtle Spell and Distant Spell made her even more cunning in how she uses her spells. So taking some levels of Sorcerer can really help someone really bolster up their primary other class as well. One common tactic I'd do with my Rogue/Sorcerer Carmen, is she'd casually talk to the guards like a lost tourist, and as she's talking, spending one sorcery point to cast Subtle Metamagic Sleep to make them fall asleep without them noticing that she's casting a spell. Likewise with Suggestion.

    They used to have racial memories in 2e.
    I'm unsure of which sorcerous origin,as of yet.
    Aberrant mind,Clockwork Soul, or the Draconic Bloodline are the three I'm stuck on.
    I'm leaning towards Draconic Bloodline for the bonus to ac (Kreen start with 13 + dex mod) & extra hit points. Wildspacer gives +2 per level..

Also I go evoker for the always on and free careful spell meta magic that is better than the one I have to pay for. Plus it always makes thematic sense that you would want to learn to control your power by training with a local mage (wizard).

    • @Nilandia
      @Nilandia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed. I'm playing one now myself and it's an intense experience!
      She's slowly trying to come to terms with her dual natures, trying to balance the compassion and humility of her Human side with the rigid morality and hatred of evil of her Celestial side. She's well aware that her existence becomes a target for evil entities, so she's tried her best to masquerade as a normal Human and a legit member of the priesthood, but there have been some emergencies when she's needed to use her Aasimar abilities to protect innocent people. There have already been rumors about an angel coming to defend the royal family. (Oops.) One of these days the girl's going to get found out, and it will be glorious. Most of the party is aware of her Celestial nature, and they like to good-naturedly tease her by calling her Lady or Saint because she hates being elevated or accorded titles or honorifics.
      I left her heritage in the hands of the DM. She doesn't know everything, but there is a strong implication that her father is a Celestial of immense power. While she wants to know where she comes from, she almost doesn't want to find her father because she's afraid of what she will find. He left her mother before she was born. Does he know she exists, and would he even care if he did know? Was she born purely so the gods could have a champion in the world and nothing more? Does he have expectations of her, and is she meeting them? Is he a pompous, arrogant jerk?
      I'm slowly trying to build her into a "servant leader" type, so I'm starting to focus on support and healing abilities while keeping a little bit of blasting in case of emergency. It's difficult with the limited spell slots, to say the least! Thank Saint Cuthbert for the Healer feat! She's actually been a departure from my usual characters in terms of build. Usually I like to arrange stats, skills, spells, and the like so I can be effective in the role I've chosen. This time, I'm specifically choosing everything with roleplay in mind. She has a 20 charisma, 18 wisdom and 14 intelligence, but a 13 dex, 11 con and 10 strength because she's an actual priest, but never excelled at physical activities. Nearly all of her spells are divine. Her acolyte background and skills were based on her character concept of a divine spellcasting prodigy scooped up by the church at a very early age. She may not be the most effective character, mechanics wise, but she's one of my favorites of all time from a roleplay perspective. Her character development has been nothing short of incredible.

    My favorite sorcerer I played was in Pathfinder: a wildblooded Sage sorcerer, who used INT for her casting stat. She was incredibly shy and bumbled through every social encounter, but she loved books and was very well read. She aced every Knowledge check

    I love playing as a storm sorcerer. The main reason I like storm sorcerer is that they get full immunity, not just resistance, to lighting and thunder damage. And the flight ability that they have is a lot faster and can also used to make your team fly. Also flying through magical means seems to be less tiring than fly using wing like dragon bloodlines so storm sorcerer can basically fly indefinitely after gaining the feature. The RP moment with this bloodline is really good. I have a lot of fun with the background on how my sorcerer got the power.
    for other storm sorcerer and other dragon sorcerer that's not fire dragon, you need to try your best to convince your DM to allow reflavor of few spell so you can get the necessary damage type spell that you need. You just need to change the damage type of the spell.

      I don't know how you would feel about this, but I think 2 levels of Tempest cleric works really well with storm sorcerer. I would say 6 levels, but I love the immunity to lightning/thunder, and your flying, along with making the rest of your party fly for an hour. That power is pretty much too good to pass up.
      The ability to supercharge a Chain Lightning (along with a minor heal spell) seems too good to pass up.

      I would love to have a draconic sorcerer with purple dragon ancestry but with the current edition I don't think it would work. Not without a lot of homebrewing, like adding some more energy based spells. The only energy spell I've come across is protection from energy.

      I'm in the same boat, I am in a low magic campaign and my sorcerer is the first arcane user in 2000 years. Just to make things more chaotic he is a young boy that grows during the campaign (he physically ages with every level) so he doesn't exactly have much restraint.

    Im playing a Storm now and its alot of fun. The lack of lightning damage spells lets you get creative with some ice spells and my DM gave me buffed wind spells to get away with fun RP stuff. I played a Teifling with horns that would conduct electricity. My high charisma was reflected in making the ambient temperature of a room be more comfortable and have a pleasant calm breeze. Then a party member started giving me a gold to act as the party thermostat lol

    Hey yall just subbed. I've played one sorcerer and it was subclassed from rogue but the general story for him was he was a mercenary scout/enforcer and one day while scouting for a nobleman's trip he got surrounded and "slain" and kidnapped for sacrifice his latent ability kicked in. Receiving a weird wooden skeleton key(spell casting focus) in his belongings when he came too tied to a to an alter after a party freed him... but he has amnesia of before that and doesnt know what the key is for/to and is investigating it and his past while being loyal to his liberators

      Dungeon Dudes , well... I ended up switching jobs and being on an incompatible schedule for that group before we could play that out but I'm keeping the character in the back pocket for another group... gonna have to reroll stats though the DM was very lenient on the stat rolling. 5d6 reroll lowest then all 1s. Might switch to a warlock subclass though for some cool story in-fighting with a friends paladin.. tho

    i love wild magic, i wasn't too sure about it at first, but the first time i rolled on the surge table i got the result that says roll on this table every round for the next 10 rounds. everything was so crazy and awesome. we were 1st level and just trying to escape the drow prison in Out of the Abyss- we weren't doing well until the surges summoned a unicorn, 3 drow burst into lightning, i turned blue, got surrounded by grease, the unicorn started fighting and was able to teleport me out of immediate danger then we ran, i got polymorphed into a sheep, but we escaped. it was the best start to a campaign ever!

    I want to try making a D&D version of Iron Man. Warforged Envoy Storm Sorcerer 18/ Tempest Cleric 2. Free heavy armor proficiency and the ability to wear it with any strength without penalty. Automatic maximization of any lightning spell with your cleric ability. The ability to fly without using concentration. Plus all the metamagic goodies, and a couple of healing spells taken with the cleric levels.
    Healing Variant: Life Cleric 1/ Divine Soul Sorcerer 19. Can also fly without concentration. I would take Magic Initiate or Ritual Caster to get an Owl to deliver healing spells/ give advantage on attack rolls

    Thrilled for these awesome Class Guides! Starting a sorcerer closely modeled after Scarlet Witch (began with favorite fire spells and realized I could focus instead on lightning/chill touch spells and cantrips depending on campaign) and chose half-elf and hopped onto here and lo n behold, it's a top choice! Love the flexibility and versatility of the sorcerer for players wanting to wade or dive into arcane magic use without melee, and without the intimidation of say the wizard, maybe the warlock, and definitely the bard, for me! Also love the main class features to offset Wild Magic Surge unpredictability, Metamagic is excellent, Fonts of Magic good way to learn spell resource management. Finally, Sorcerous Restoration! Good matching choice of spells! Misty Step and Dimension Door!

    I hate that 5e sorcerers have spells that require material components, it doesn't fit the description of the class or flavour the fluff seems to be going for at all. Don't remember how 3 or 3.5 did it and we didn't have them back when we played AD&D, but I think 4e actually nailed them!
    I like that wizards who prepare spells need material components, that fits the arcane scholar or book magician type. I also think holy symbols, holy water, salt and earth-type components really fits the cleric or the priest-type caster. But no, material components for sorcerers seems really out of place!

    • @margaritatabellini8806

      I mean, it's not such a big deal if you prepare everything in advance (buy extra material and pouches etc). It also adds a limit, so nobody goes completely mental with too much power.

    • @nonbiri6966

      Totally agree. If this is supposed to be something that comes naturally, that you don’t fully understand at first and can’t always control then where/how would learn V,S,M? That totally ruins the image of something like Storm from X-Men. I feel like this was a compromise to keep consistency of game mechanics with other spell classes, rather than being true to the concept of the sorcerer.

    • @margaritatabellini8806

      @@nonbiri6966 My sorcerer has dragon ancestors, so in that case it's the parents who taught her what they knew. For other origins, it might involve a lot of experimenting? At first using materials and then, the more they practise and understand magic, the less materials they require to cast. It's more realistic than just "oh cool! I was born with magic, so... Fireboll! Magic hand!! Magic darts!"

    my level three assassin was cursed with lycanthropy during a werewolf hunt, subsequent to that but before i first turned, i had my hitpoints reduced to 0 during a bandit ambush. the curse has since been lifted but my character has noticed strange feelings and nightmares.
    my brush with death while still cursed with lycanthropy seems to have put me in touch with the shadowfell and left me with a small open channel of magical energy. the onset is subtle. other party members might notice that i don't seem to breath in my sleep (i'm not aware of this), i'm alarmed but haven't told anyone that my heart beats once per minute; i am also cool to the touch (i just think it's poor circulation) and i don't bleed much when I am injured.
    finally (has yet to happen) my powers will first manifest when i really need a distraction during a stealthy infiltration and an illusion or cacophony of shattered glass will occur at the opposite end of a hallway or some such. use of powers will make me feel out of phase with reality and take a lot out of me, my voice will change and my eyes will go black.

    My very first character was a Storm Sorcerer Tempest Domain Cleric to much success. I was "wave-dashing" every where, popping off Max hits (our party [Hunter Ranger, Transmutation Wizard, and myself] of 3 lvl 3 PCs halved the Young Green Dragon in Lost Mine of Phandelver in under 1 Round, after we all survived a point blank dragon breath attack.) The damage difference was the Wrath of the Storm reaction ability the Tempest Cleric unlocks.

    My first ever character was a tiefling sorcerer (still in a campaign with her). Due to her backstory she's usually fairly reserved and lets the party bard do the talking, but has paired up with him to whip out some great traps/deceptions and has talked the group out of 2 fights, one of them fairly dangerous. Such a fun class to play!
