Best car I've owned (this being the 6th Merc to date since a young man - I do keep each one for several years at least). I am now aged 60! I have had this car 5 years and will have it many more yet (its a supercharged R171 model) and it ticks all the boxes. Quick, stylish, reliable, elegant, classy, cheap to run and a real head turner! Mine is in obsidian black on a 2006 plate and near mint at nearly 19 years old! Plus the top goes down. No more to say, an amazing piece of engineering.
I've been enjoying your EV stuff.... and stumbled across this vid. You made a comment about being able to see the top close from out of the car...... well.... you have always been able to do that. Just hold the lock or unlock button. The issue is, it's IR and you have to point the key fob at one of the door handles. It's a pain, and on a very sunny day it doesn't work well. Anyway... I've been looking into a unit like this. thanks for the vid.
I loved this video! Been really curious about the Mods 4 Cars device because it's seems so well developed. But never did I expect your video to be the best demonstration online MGuy. Even the menu activation sequence was clearly shown [that was my concern but you made it look so easy]. Definitely will be ordering.
Hi. Nice video. A couple of questions about the vario-roof. I have a 2006-7 R171 350, and although the roof opens OK using the switch inside the car, the key fob stubbornly refuses to open it -- any ideas? Also, do you find the steering on the SLK350 heavy? Mine is very heavy -- any ideas what causes this?
Thanks so much for this fantastic informative video. On the back of this, I got one of their modules for my R172 SLC 43 and am completely delighted with it. It includes all of the features you mentioned, plus it allows opening and closing of windows (without roof) and a pretty useful feature of "remembering" which drive mode you were in when you last turned off the engine and starting again in that one... reducing the need to multiple button presses to get back to S+ mode each time I turn the key!
I can't be certain but I suspect that the main reason for having a roof button that requires constant pressure whilst operating is so that any adverse event, like something/someone getting caught in the mechanism can very rapidly be paused to avoid further damage/injury! The alternative - pressing the button a second time - adds delay to a possibly urgent situation and keeps mechanical processes ongoing rather than allow a moment for consideration and re-evaluation. With that said, I would still personally prefer the choices offered by this widget!!
Awesome mate, I've got a 2005 slk 280 imported from UK to down under, it was so annoying not to be able to get the roof up and down while in motion and with a touch of a button. I'm going to get this module for sure. Another issue I have with this car is because it is 2005 it does not have Bluetooth function. Is there a way to change the cd player to a newer model in order to have Bluetooth function to be compatible with this model.
It's a sweet, fast little ride but expensive to have. Gas,insurance, and oil change. I don't put the top down anymore because the top is glass for 2012 slk350 and it cracked on the edges, and to replace is about $800 the same for oil change. So now it just looks nice inside the garage collecting dust and taking lots of room 😮
Thanks for watching - the roof mechanisms are complex with a number of hydraulic elements and micro switches - take the car to an independent MB specialist with a Star Diagnostic system and they’ll be able to tell you easily.
Great Video thanks and I also just watched the Alpine head Unit fit. I was wondering does this SmartTOP module work with the afte rmarket Multimedia Unit? I am in UK.
One question I know you’re talking about the SLK 350 but do you know if the SLK 300 convertible top will go down at night or does it only operate with sunlight because that’s kind of a dealbreaker for me here in Florida
it'd be interesting to know if this would work with a 3rd party Android drop-in replacement for the radio/media device; I'm not sure how the radio integration and detection goes with those.
They do have a different module for the R170 so yes you can! Link: www.mods4cars.com/sms/shop/index.php?p=b3JnYT1zbWFydHRvcCZncm91cD0yJmxhbmc9MiZjdXJyPTI=&action=products&cat=2&mode=view&id=67
I don't have a module like this for my slk 350 r171 but I can put my roof down from outside the car by holding the unlock button (all the time until the vario roof operation is done) BUT it doesn't always work. Could it be low battery in the car or the key, anyone knows?
For this to work you need to point the end of the key, which has a circular window, at the little black square next to the keyhole on the door - I believe this feature is infrared rather than wireless so the transmitter and receiver have to be pointing at each other. Good luck!
Not a good idea at all to drive and put the roof down....unless you are on perfect smooth surface driving constant low speed... They made it that way [stationary] to endure and not fail ie require expensive fix...

Thank you so much for uploading this! my parents are buying my first car and it is an slk 350! this helped me so much!
Lucky you! You’ll need the Mods4Cars module - link in description.

I have a 2005 manual slk 350 r171. Is a 19 years old car but I love it!
is it reliable? i want to buy one but i heard they have problems.
Manual?! CONGRATULATIONS...unicorn status!👊🏽
Great video! I’m slowly trying to modernize my R171 starting with a new CarPlay stereo, but this might be my next upgrade. Cheers
It's a great upgrade - well worth it!
Hi mate, have you done this and could you send me a link to the device you bought

Thanks for subbing!
love your videos we have just purchased a 171 but when we open the roof the middle part sticks up any clues?
Thanks for watching - the roof mechanisms are complex with a number of hydraulic elements and micro switches - take the car to an independent MB specialist with a Star Diagnostic system and they’ll be able to tell you easily.
What is the complete name of the module?, I need one for my Slk 230 Kompressor.
Thanks for the information
Great Video thanks and I also just watched the Alpine head Unit fit. I was wondering does this SmartTOP module work with the afte rmarket Multimedia Unit? I am in UK.
Yes, with a bit of effort. Check out my video here: th-cam.com/video/qLuuIAkwxtw/w-d-xo.html
The price of them is insane. There's a guy on the 350z forums that makes the exact same thing and it cost £70 excl P&P.
Where do I buy the mod ?
hi i have 2014 slk 350 i think 172 if i buy the one you have that work for my car too thank
Can this work on the E400 m Benz?
Great Video, thank you!
Friggin sweet !

Any time day or night, winter or summer itll work.
Why would it not work at night? 😂
Hi! If you have a different touch screen dashboard can you operate it somehow just with the steering wheel?
Yes you can - I have a video on that exact topic
Did this car have tempomat ?

Seemingly not available for Mercedes SLC in the UK.
does it works with thr r170 model?

Will this work on the first generation? The R170.
They do have a different module for the R170 so yes you can! Link: www.mods4cars.com/sms/shop/index.php?p=b3JnYT1zbWFydHRvcCZncm91cD0yJmxhbmc9MiZjdXJyPTI=&action=products&cat=2&mode=view&id=67

That’s nice but how do the rest of us get it ?

My key stopped doing this not sure why its an Slk R171 2010 model please help me
If the battery of your key fob is low. Change it, and it should fix it
@@DonGoodVids that did not work :(

It's annoying.
I don't see the promised link.

It’s a cool feature but it doesn’t provide any operational advantage
I can't even operate the roof without a key 😪😪
What do you mean?
👍
What a ridiculous expense for vanity!
Sounds useless and ridiculous at same time!
Should have named the video
How to be a smug shit and show off my convertible Mercedes
Awe somebodys jealous!
Wow brother that's cool would it work for 2005 slk 350
Should work for all R170s and R171s
Just got my slk 350 in maroon I will give this a try I've been pulling over to open the top 😅
