In 1977 I called into a local radio station to make a request. As it turn out I just happened to call at the right time and won 4 tickets to see ELO. By accident. I tried selling them to make a few bucks and got no takers. The night of the show. I gave 1 away and a decided to go with a couple of friends with the remaining 3 tickets. It was hands down one of the best concerts I have ever attended! And I have seen some big bad mammer jammers. From Aerosmith to Zeppelin. ELO was the real deal. Long live RNR!
I got lucky and saw Queen at Irvine amphitheater only because I wanted to get in this chics pants !!!! Thank good because best concert ever !!!! Freddie Mercury tippy toeing all over the stage , what a show
I got dragged to a Queen concert , I didn’t want to go but that beautiful goddess girlfriend of mine made me !!! Thank God because that was the best concert I’ve ever been to . And got to explore the goddess afterwards ❤❤❤❤❤❤
+dedeo8957: Fine post, Dadeo. Well done. I'm 70 at the end of '24. I was surprised just the other day to find out Jeff Lynne was still around. I was telling a younger co-worker about the Wilburys and I thought Dylan was the only one still alive, only to find out that Jeff is still touring.
Jeff Lynne is an amazing musician, producer & arranger. His concert at Wembley Stadium many years later was a testament to his influence on the music industry. It was a total family affair, from toddlers to grandparents. Now that's what I call a great artist for the people forever.
Indeed Jeff, you've achieved the Holy Grail, by a true musician and your ELO group! Finally achieving that final luxury of getting into the RRHF!!!! Congrats friend!!!
Rock band gone orchestra! Jeff Lynne... musical genius. Inducted into the musical song writers hall of fame. No one more deserving of this honor than Jeff Lynne! I saw him in concert in 2019. He sounded the same as in the 70s. Phenomenal concert! He's touring again. Happy Saturday... thank you for sharing! 💖
My daughter's first concert was when she was 5 . Saw them at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix. She will be 50 on her next birthday and still remembers the concert. What an incredible band.
I also saw them at the Celebrity Theater. They played there twice in 1974. The tail end of the 'On the Third Day' tour and the beginning of the "Eldorado' tour. Both shows incredible in the round.
There was a live album recorded a few nights before they played Phoenix in Long Beach, CA, May 12th . It was issued under the title The Night the Went on in Long Beach.
The two best things about the 70s. I graduated high school in 76, but even better, I found ELO in 74. Still loving Jeff Lynne's ELO in 2024. 50 years and he's still the best.❤❤❤❤❤
Love early ELO!! A huge reason I play violin is inspiration from the album this song was on: On The Third Day..🙏🏼 The strings are incredible! 🌹 Amazing how huge they became years later
ELO is one of my favorite acts from the Seventies and early Eighties. They performed quite often on the Midnight Special. I'm going to create a playlist from these performances.
Don't get me wrong, but I wish they would have done this live like on Rockpalast the same year. Bev is fantastic being allowed to cut loose. Showing their true collective talents was easy for ELO. Great to have different versions of this song preserved however- Thank you Midnight Special!
I still can't believe we were all stuck, after their show, in the same Holiday Inn and these guys where in the rooms above ours, it was a hellva ice storm I was so effed up I couldn't climb the stairs to go meet them, but we did party like crazy, my friends wife went up and met them, she said they were all really nice guys, she lost their autographs many years afterward.
I think it's because Jeff knew they'd come across better if given the option to mime to the recording. You can't open mic the strings with the stage volume the drums and guitars would generate, and pickup technology was severely lacking back then. There's also the fact that almost all of the background vocals are overdubbed Jeff Lynne. Other voices singing those backup lines just wouldn't sound tight. Compare this, also from 1974: th-cam.com/video/ao76DISdx7s/w-d-xo.html

@@CrandMackerel It was the show's producers who decided those things, not the band/performer. They performed live on MS many times.
There are plenty of other examples throughout the show’s run but thankfully the live performances outnumber the lip synced ones. I’ve watched the guitar solo on this one a few times now and compared it with the studio recording. I kinda feel like that part might be live. That’s been done before on MS too… I remember REO doing a song where the main vocals were live but everything else was a track. Slightly more realism, but still a cop out.
Prince has a lip synced performance here also. So does John Mellencamp. I agree though, most of what I have personally seen appear to be live.

There are live vocals along with the recorded track. Seeing these old MS clips, I'm surprised , though. I don't remember THAT many mimed performances. More than I thought.
I love ELO! One of my favorite bands. Amazing, unique sound. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius with a voice that could melt butter. I thought his glasses were part a part of his facial anatomy, but I guess I'm wrong
I'll never forget when Bev Bevan filled in for Bill Ward for the Black Sabbath Born Again tour. Bev Bevan, Ian Gillan from Deep Purple, Iommi and Geezer. Yup it happened and it was incredible. He did excellent.

I spotted it from the beginning because Jeff Lynn's mouth is too far from the mic for his voice to be projecting like it appears to do. His voice also has too much studio echo effects to be live. The entire arrangement is a precise replica of the studio version. I came into the comments to see if anybody else noticed the lip-synch
@@philiphatfield5666 Agreed. Disappointing. On the other hand, Steve Miller took Fly Like An Eagle to the next level on The Midnight Special. I had no idea how creative Steve Miller was before seeing him on The Midnight Special.
I love Jeff Lynne, but something's weird. Unless Richard Tandy is adding synthetic strings (and he seems to be playing a clavinova part), there are backing tracks. Watch the string players at 1:48. They're playing pizzicato, yet you can clearly hear sustained string notes. Then there's that fade-out ending. Seems dubbed.
Thanks very much for upload. Last week I saw Phil Bates (former ELO Part II) live here in Germany, as tribute to ELO, also with this song. Nice gig and worth to see, great musicians.

In love all over again!! What a band....what a voice!!
Jeff Lynne’s hair was MASSIVE! And not wearing his usual shades.
Didnt wear them regularly till '78.
A Jeff Lynne no le gustan las camaras. Curioso, porque desde mi punto de vista es guapisimo. Su nariz esta hecha a mano😂❤
hmm was not high?
I thought that there was something different about him.
God I miss the 70’s 😢
the music was outstanding.... still is.
I think rock music peaked in the 70's and early 80's
To go back 😢
The most iconic band of the 70s.. just incredible
Jeff Lynn One of The lead singers of The Traveling Wilburys
Mike Edwards, Hugh McDowell and Richard Tandy all no longer with us, RIP to the three of them.
Kelly Growcutt too (RIP)😢
Oh no!!
Mik Kaminski still with us?? 🌹

2024 and it sounds better than anything being produced today !!
ELO recorded many good songs but Showdown is my favorite. My first horse I ever got I named him Showdown after this song.
Dig that lion look, bell bottoms, and platform shoes rocking the 70s in style and talent.
Jeff is a GENIUS artist. He's till alive too. Yay.
Good Lord, I've have so forgotten this song, but it has been 50 years and a few "lifetimes" since this radio play.

Oh, this was 1975!
Such an original sounding use of strings in an already terrific rock song. Brilliant!
I was in high school when this came out. Had it on 8 track. All my friends were into hard rock and heavy metal. I was into ELO.
I saw them live in 2018 and 2019 in Detroit with my brother and we both loved every single minute!!!!
I saw them five times in Detroit (1976-1981)...when they were young and Jeff could still sing.
ELO... simplemente espectacular .
I'm such a dork. I didn't know that this was an ELO song, though I've heard it since my 1970s childhood.
Awesome Goldtop, Jeff.
Why are they miming? I've seen clips from other music shows of the era and they performed the song perfectly.
I think it's because Jeff knew they'd come across better if given the option to mime to the recording.

I remember watching this on tv
Saw them on their big night tour with the spaceship. Saw a couple years after that as well. Great band.
Hi Burt!
Thank you!

Saw them at William Patterson College when yhis album came out and was blown away. I knew then we were in for something special with this band

She cried to the southern wind
About a love that was sure to end
Every dream in her heart was gone
Headin' for a Showdown
Bad dreamer, what's your name?
Looks like we're ridin' on the same train
Looks as through there'll be more pain
There's gonna be a Showdown
And it's rainin' all over the world
It's raining all over the world
Tonight, the longest night
Saw them at Philadelphia’s Schubert theater around this time
Siempre espere está magnífica actuación. Gracias MS.
I wish it was “live” instead of synced to the actual recording. Bev Bevin gave it away.
I saw that too. Kids, look at 4:15 there is a snare drum hit but Bev's left hand is on the other side of the kit.
I agree…but the studio version is kick ass and nothing beats watching the band “perform” a very underrated song 👍
