  • Snuck in a fishing outing in the morning to make up for being skunked the night before - glad I did, once they started biting they came in quick succession.

    Nice video, beautiful fish! Do you know if there's any fish to be caught there in winter? And what baits would work best? I'm there for a couple of days so I might try my luck. Thank you

    • @FishNY
      @FishNY  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There are always fish to be caught! Although it does get a bit slower in the winter if you’re hoping for Stripers - the hake are pretty much there year round, as well as the white perch. Some of the piers especially on the NJ side of the Hudson have schoolies hanging out all winter as well. I say totally give it a shot on a sunny winter day, at worst you can call it early if you don’t have any luck and grab a warm coffee and bowl of soup at a nice cafe nearby.

    Man great video!! What kind of bait would you recommend to use at Hudson River? Thanks!!

    • @FishNY
      @FishNY  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! It really depends on what you’re going for, bloodworms pretty much will catch the most types of fish, but if you’re going after striped bass then bunker is king. For some of the rarer species, shrimp or clams work pretty well. One time I saw a dude pull up like three oyster toadfish in an hour using chicken liver lol

      @@FishNY Quick question, about how deep is the water there around that pier? Also who owns it and are there any legal restrictions on fishing or crabbing there? Thx!

    • @minheo2864
      @minheo2864 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ralphrepo this was on the NJ side, which similar to the Hudson River Park, you can fish anywhere so long as there are no signs posted by the city otherwise. Some of the piers might be privately owned but I recall reading that NJ passed a law that made public access to the Hudson mandatory. This pier has a sink and is clearly set up for fishermen so pretty safe to fish. I usually just try to use common sense and fish where I won’t be a bother to anyone.

    • @ralphrepo
      @ralphrepo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@minheo2864 Thanks! Any idea how deep that pier is? I'm primarily a crabber and all my lines are maxed at about 25 feet.

    • @FishNY
      @FishNY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Off of the tip of the pier, it's right at that max I would say, since if I cast 30 yards it gets pretty deep (about 40). My guess is if you only go halfway down that pier, it'll be less than 20 feet deep at a normal tide.

      @FishNY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MHoodFishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishNY Have you ever caught catfish in the hudson?

    • @MHoodFishing
      @MHoodFishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe the river spots up in the Bronx would be more productive on freshwater fish. Use google maps to find them. It's park right below where the harlem river comes off the hudson. Do you know it?

    • @FishNY
      @FishNY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never gotten a catfish in any of the spots I usually fish in the city, although a ton of the guys I see around the piers when fishing tell me that there are a few places higher up as well as down lower where the Passaic and Raritan empty into the bay that have some large monsters. I know where that park in Harlem is - it was actually very near the top of my list! Up near the Cloisters, right? That park is beautiful, I'll definitely do one there this summer.
      Were you around NY before? I'm binging your channel now so maybe will find out!

    which is better? New york side? Roosevelt Island (Middle Of East River) Or the new jersey side

    • @FishNY
      @FishNY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      OooOoOo you ask ten people you'll get ten different answers hahaha - I grew up fishing the Hudson on the Jersey side, so am a bit biased that way. My experience is that when the bite is hot on the East River, it out-fishes the Hudson, but the Hudson more reliably produces fish and has a bit more diversity of species. The East River has much more of the larger saltwater fish that come through the channel though so if you're a risk taker, the East might be better for you (lower probability of catching, but the fish when caught will likely be larger). Let me know how you fare!
