“ODALISQUE: Henriette, Harmony in Red” is based on the 1926-27 painting by Matisse and is the second version of the original flute solo written by Valerie for Trudy Kane, former Principal flutist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, who introduced Valerie to the painter's works. The subject, Henriette Darricarrère, was a skilled musician and dancer who modeled for Matisse for several years in France. Shades of red dominate the ornate backdrop as Henriette lounges on the couch. The opening of this first caprice is languid and leisurely and effectively acquaints us with the carefree odalisque. After the introduction, Coleman paints a playful and flirtatious musical tapestry that ends with a charming wink. Notes by Emily Bedard Dierickx
